About vivo X50 Pro

Vivo X50 Pro, a Photographer's Dream Phone

Nowadays, a smartphone isn't truly a smartphone if you cannot use it to take good photos and videos. May it be for social media or work, high-quality images and films are a must and a good smartphone should be able to handle this with ease. In our digital age, most of us capture every single moment and share these snapshots with friends and family, and we also take a look back once in a while on our previous trips and vacations, as pictures and videos will always be better than just a blurry memory. The Vivo X50 Pro is a smartphone that has a beautiful design and a best-in-class camera system, perfect for casual shooters or professional photographers alike. Moreover, the phone is built with premium materials, has a screen that's both fast and enticing, and is powered by a speedy Snapdragon 765g chipset with lots of RAM and storage. The phone lasts all day as well with its 4,315 mAH battery, and since it supports 33W fast charging, you can plug it in for a few minutes and be all set for the rest of the day. What sets this smartphone apart from all the others is that it's the first and only smartphone that has a built-in gimbal for the smoothest possible video recordings. The total of five cameras on this is exceptional, each with its own practical function. Overall, The Vivo X50 Pro is an elegant smartphone with a beautiful full-screen display, fast performance, lots of battery, and a top-notch camera system especially for shooting video.

Surprisingly Elegant

When it comes to premium smartphones, the first brands that come to mind are Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. Their flagships are nothing but short of amazing in terms of quality and design, but the drawback is that these come at a cost, some even upwards of a thousand dollars. Surprisingly, Vivo made the X50 Pro one of the best looking and feeling devices this year, without it having to cost nearly as much as the well-known flagships. The device has a unique satin-soft finish on the frosted glass back, which hides fingerprints well and doesn't smudge easily. There's a rear-quad camera module with a two-tone black and silver design which gives it a fresh and a tad futuristic look. The sides are made from aluminum, giving it a cold-to-the-touch feel which we all love. The power button and the volume rocker are on the right side of the phone with a good amount of feedback with each press. At the bottom edge of the phone is the USB-C and next to it is the speaker grill. The front of the display houses a big curved screen with very slim bezels, and at the corner is a discreet hole-punch for the selfie camera. Overall, the X50 Pro is designed to look gorgeous and feel premium, and it gives the user an experience that's well above the expectations.

A Speedy and Immersive Display

We all love viewing content straight from our smartphones. Whether that's watching Youtube videos or streaming from Netflix or Twitch, smartphones provide a more intimate watching experience. With the Vivo X50 Pro, consuming content has never been more immersive. The display of the X50 Pro is a gorgeous 6.56-inch Full HD+ OLED display with curved edges, similar to that of Samsung's and Oneplus' flagships. The bezels are very slim, and with the discreet hole-punch camera, it's difficult to get distracted while using the device. The display is also very fast with a 90hz refresh rate, with normal smartphones being only at 60hz, so scrolling through the home screen or even reading news articles is a spectacular experience. This is not the fastest out there, with flagships from Oneplus and some gaming phones having 120hz refresh rates, but is still a solid number. The phone also lets you tone down the refresh rate to 60hz if you want to extend the battery life even more. In addition, there is an in-display fingerprint reader installed, which works well and fast enough most of the time. Furthermore, the display sports a resolution of 2376x1080 which, although not the highest, is very clear and pixels are not at all visible. The panel is also compatible with HDR10+, so movies and films that have this format are very pleasing to watch on this device. Vivo could have thrown in a 1440p panel here, but that would limit the battery life and increase the price of the unit, so overall, the display of the Vivo X50 Pro is excellent and well-balanced.

Solid All-around Processing Power

The Vivo X50 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765g. Although this is not the latest and fastest CPU, the performance of the device is still great and can handle all tasks and games well. According to Android Authority, the X50 Pro got 2,841 (single-core) and 7707 (multicore) scores on GeekBench. It also got an overall benchmark score of 4,641 on 3DMark Slingshot. These numbers are not as high as the latest flagships but are still more than adequate for most use cases. Moving on, the device is also equipped with 8GB of RAM, so multitasking and switching between activities have no noticeable delay or lag. Moreover, the device starts at 128GB of storage, which is plenty for most users' apps and games, but for serious photographers or filmmakers, the 256GB variant would be a better option. Overall, the Vivo X50 Pro is an excellent performing mid-range smartphone that would be viable for most users.

A Fun Take on Android 10

The Vivo X50 Pro runs FunTouch 0S 10.5 on top of Android 10. It's a simple UI that's fairly easy to use. Before FunTouch OS was a miserable experience, with lots of bugs and gimmicks that nobody wanted, but it's good to see that Vivo is clearly listening to its users and has toned down the OS a lot. The phone still has some pre-installed bloatware, but most of it can be turned off which is good. Moreover, Funtouch OS comes with neat features such as dark mode, always-on display, and an app drawer, most of which are customizable to your liking. The icons of the home and app screens have a circular shape, giving the device a minimalistic and uniform aesthetic. One thing different with the UI is that when answering calls, you have to swipe down instead of swiping up, which may cause some accidental rejected calls. This is a minor issue but could be quite irritating to some people who are used to normal smartphones. Also, Funtouch OS comes with an integrated global search and is activated with a swipe down gesture. This is different from most Android smartphones, with a swipe down opening the notification shade, so there's a bit of an adjustment to be learned. Nonetheless, the Vivo X50 Pro with Funtouch OS is decent, and hopefully will be improved even more through future software updates.

A Revolutionary Built-In Gimbal

Most Android smartphones these days have multiple cameras already, some being less useful than others. Vivo took this in mind and, instead of copying other manufacturers, included great cameras for different scenarios and even added something that has never appeared on any other smartphone before - a built-in gimbal. At the rear of the phone is a quad-camera system, consisting of a 48MP f/1.6 primary with micro-gimbal stabilization, an 8MP f/2.2 120-degree ultra-wide, a 13MP f/2.5 2x telephoto, and an 8MP f/3.4 5x telephoto. The primary sensor shoots great-looking shots, especially with ample lighting. The image quality is sharp with no noticeable grain. The colors tend to be over-saturated, which some users may not like, but the dynamic range is excellent.

Taking photos with the primary yields some very consistent results, so if you just want to quickly point and shoot, this would be a great phone for you. Moving on, the ultra-wide camera is decent with a big field of view. It may not be as sharp as the primary sensor, having just 8MP to work with, but the distortion correction gets the job done. The saturation is consistent between all the lenses, which is great. Next is the telephoto or zoom lenses. Vivo took an interesting approach with the X50 Pro by giving it two telephoto lenses. The 2x telephoto is designed for taking portrait shots, and the results look very good, but it also works great as a 2x zoom lens, giving accurate and high contrast colors to subjects. Meanwhile, the 5x telephoto lens takes good enough shots. The results tend to be slightly overexposed, but if you really need to zoom in on far subjects, then this lens gets the job done. In addition, there's also a built-in macro mode that utilizes the ultra-wide lens to crop in and capture a close-up shot. However, this results in lower quality images so you'll be better off just using the normal mode. For the selfie camera, the results are good but the detail and dynamic range are limited. Portrait mode selfie is also here, with the usual skin enhancement, sharpening, and bokeh effect. Personally, I would just use the primary sensor to take portrait shots, but if you need the front camera to do it, the option is there. The best feature of the cameras here is the gimbal system, which shifts the lens along two axes using electromagnetic induction.

With this, night mode and low-light photography with the X50 Pro is simply amazing, since it lets you use shutter speeds as low as one-eighth of a second, resulting in pictures that are bright, noise-free, and high-quality. But what sets this phone apart from all the others is video recording. You can shoot up to 4k60fps and with the gimbal system, the stabilization is unmatched. Even when you're walking ruggedly or riding on a bumpy road, the video is smooth as butter. This is a perfect phone for vloggers or filmmakers, as you get footage that is almost just as good, if not better than expensive mirrorless or DSLR cameras, without having to get an external gimbal. Overall, the camera system of the Vivo X50 Pro is best-in-class, and may even be better than some high-end flagships.

A Battery That Lasts All Day Long

The Vivo X50 Pro is equipped with a 4,315 mAh battery. This, together with the 765g and a 1080p display results in battery life that lasts all day. Screen-on time here can easily surpass seven hours on average, which is more than enough for most people. You can even improve it more by lowering the refresh rate of the screen. The phone is well equipped to last a long day of photoshoots and filmmaking which is awesome. When you do need to charge, you have 33W of fast charging, and with our testing, charging the phone from zero percent to full takes only 73 minutes, and a 15-minute charge gives you 30% battery life. On some android phones, a large screen with a high refresh rate usually makes the battery life suffer, but clearly, that is not the case with the X50 Pro. Overall, the battery life here is awesome, and fast charging is a great addition, too. In terms of connectivity, the device has all the usual specs you would see on other modern smartphones, namely 4G/LTE, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, USB Type-C, USB OTG support, and NFC. There is no headphone jack here, but the device supports the full range of aptX codecs and can output for LDAC as well for lossless audio listening. The speakers are fine and get loud enough for listening to music or watching videos, but front-facing speakers will still be superior.

A Premium Camera Beast

Vivo did a really good job with the X50 Pro. In the ever-evolving market of mid-range devices, companies tend to throw in the fastest screens and processors at the sacrifice of camera quality and sometimes battery life. Vivo did the opposite; they put in a mid-range chipset together with an innovative camera system that makes the device a solid all-rounder but a best-in-class shooter. The screen is great, the build is excellent, the features are neat, the battery is solid, and the camera is superior and is far better than the competition. If you're looking for a smartphone that feels premium and is focused mainly on photography, then the Vivo X50 Pro is for you.
