About vivo X50

About Vivo X50

Vivo is a Chinese technology company that sits in the top ten smartphone manufacturers in the world. The company's recent X50 Series wowed consumers with its camera-centric lineup released last July 2020. One of them is the Vivo X50, a premium mid-range device with a lower price than the flagship phone Vivo X50 Pro. It features an in-display fingerprint scanner and facial recognition. It is designed with fun unlocking and fingerprint animations in the settings. Interestingly, Vivo pioneered the invention of optical fingerprint readers in android phones. Most designs from this year's releases, including the competitors, have implemented this innovative phone design. It is presented in a big, textured square box with a bold X50 logo. Inside the package, you will find the slimmest camera phone, a clear silicone case, a sim ejector tool, a USB-C cable for charging, a 33W Vivo FlashCharge power brick, a pair of earphones, and a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter. It offers storage of up to 256GB but not expandable. The phone size is 159.54 x 75.39 x 7.49 mm. It comes in Glaze Black with a glossy finish and Frost Blue with a matte finish. This model achieved a score of 281,494 points on the AnTuTu Benchmark. It scored 545 (Single-core) and 1,741 (Multi-core) on the Geekbench rating. For the PCMark benchmark, this phone got a score of 8,270 (Work 2.0). For the 3DMark benchmark, it scored 2,246 (OpenGL) and 2,071 (Vulkan). Lastly, AndroBench marks the Vivo X50 with 502.06 MB/s (Seq. Read) and 216.07 MB/s (Seq. Write).

This phone is one of the slimmest in the market, although the actual size is hefty. It may not be compatible for people with small hands, as it would be difficult for them to use it with one hand. Even for average-sized palms, you would need both hands to swipe the top part of the phone. However, this size is relatively standard compared to competitors. As with proper handling, it is more secure and safe for users to use both hands on these precious smartphones. It also features a flat top and bottom, which means it can stand on its own horizontally. The protruding rear camera is also an issue, making the phone wobbly and unstable. This can be fixed, though, as long as you utilize the clear silicone case that comes free with the smartphone. Its extra layer levels out the uneven back and, at the same time, protects the most valuable part of this device – the quad-camera.

Pros

  • Premium quadruple-camera setup
  • Upscale phone design
  • Outstanding display with a high refresh rate
  • Phone performance is excellent for media consumption
  • Fast charging
  • Package contains complete phone accessories

Cons

  • Average processor
  • A bit pricey
  • No 5G connectivity
  • Non-expandable internal storage

Design and Display of the Vivo X50

The Vivo X50 is notable for its modern and premium look. It features a slim, lightweight build, reflective mirror gradient design, and a vertically aligned rear quad camera setup. It has an aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass on both ends. The front surface is bezel-less, while the back sports a protruding rear camera with the LED flash and color temperature beside it. Almost unnoticeable is a tiny third microphone at the bottom of the cameras. The front bears a tiny hole punch cut-out for the selfie camera, and the rest is a flat-screen. The phone's left side is clear, while on the right side, the power button and volume controls are located. On top, there is a secondary microphone. Moving on at the bottom part, you will see the loudspeaker, USB-C 2.0 port, primary microphone, and a dual-SIM card tray.

The Vivo X50 features a display of 6.56 inches AMOLED with a high 90Hz refresh rate. The resolution is 1080 x 2376 pixels. It has a flat, buttery-smooth screen with a down-firing loudspeaker. The display supports HDR10+, has a clean UI, and shows vibrant colors and deep blacks. You will enjoy smooth, responsive swiping motions and a seamless transition every time you use it. The Vivo X50 is a well-built, near-flagship phone offered at a lower price yet delivers a premium experience. It may or may not be an issue, but the single hole punch selfie camera has an unusual placement on the screen's upper left. This is highly noticeable when watching or gaming on a full screen. The black circle will somehow look nicer if it was closer to the edge.

The Software of the Vivo X50

This phone's software runs on the latest Android 10 skinned with Funtouch OS 10.5. One unique selling point for this device is Jovi, an AI assistant that makes your life easier and allows you to maximize technology's benefits. The homescreen offers a convenient app drawer, so you can organize and prioritize which apps you will frequently access. There are pre-installed apps that are widely-used and popular such as Gcash, FB, and Lazada. You will also find a lot of bloatware that you can opt to remove if you don't need them.

The Vivo X50 also brings joy to online gamers. It provides an Ultra Game mode that helps boost your gaming experience. Features include a high refresh rate, fluid scrolling, and quality animations. You can conveniently block notifications for uninterrupted gaming. It has a 4D vibration and sound enhancement for performance optimization, plus it guarantees stutter-free and lag-free gaming. Aside from it being a great camera phone, it also delivers splendid graphics perfect for stable gaming and reliable for everyday use.

Performance of the Vivo X50

The Vivo X50 is powered by Qualcomm SDM730 Snapdragon 730 (8 nm) chipset. It has a speedy interface, thanks to its octa-core CPU that provides the best quality in android phones. It has a GPU of Adreno 618 and comes in memory configurations with up to 8GB of RAM. The internal storage options are 128GB and 256GB but not expandable. This smartphone delivers decent performance with no lags, although tech-savvy users may not favor its average processor. Considering their price range, other mobile brands can offer 5G connectivity. On the other hand, if this device is compared to Vivo smartphones, it definitely outshines most of them. Overall, it has proven superb performance even if you use it heavily.

The Camera of the Vivo X50

A brilliant catchphrase for anyone interested is seen on top of the phone that says "Professional Photography." This smartphone has a quadruple-camera setup with OIS, PDAF, dual-LED, and dual-tone flash. It renders a high dynamic range with panorama and night mode. Vivo also enhanced it with a 4-axis OIS that regulates image stabilization. The main camera/primary shooter has a wide lens with a high 48MP resolution and a customized Sony IMX598 sensor. The second camera has a 13MP telephoto portrait lens with two-times optical zoom for depth and 20 times digital zoom. The third camera features an ultra-wide-angle lens with 8MP resolution and equipped with distortion correction. The fourth camera has a macro lens with a 5MP resolution.

Vivo has always had a first-rate selfie camera in most models. Veering away from the cute, sliding front cameras, it has now restructured the selfie feature. In the Vivo X50, expect to get the same quality and satisfaction with your photos. Its front shooter boasts a 32MP resolution, resulting in images with excellent detail even if the beauty mode or filters are disabled. The rear camera can record videos in 4K resolution, while the selfie camera can record videos in 1080p, 30fps. Another plus is the Vivo camera app on the phone, which helps beginners experiment with different settings to achieve the most satisfactory shot. Its rear quad camera setup has a nice standard mode that produces clear and sharp images. The phone's super-wide-angle lens is also very useful, especially for mobile videographers or content creators. The Sony IMX598 sensor is also worth mentioning, as it automatically adjusts images with pleasant tweaks. However, the macro camera has a below-average rating. Close-up shots require you to be super close (1.5 cm) to the subject, which is most of the time impractical or not possible. In cases where you get a pretty good shot, you will notice that the image has some noise upon closer examination. The low resolution of 5MP is also a disadvantage if you intend to print or enlarge the close-up photo. The Vivo X50 rear quad camera offers more light sensitivity and good contrast, boosts night shots without affecting quality, and delivers accurate colors. With little effort, you can get a photo with a customizable Bokeh effect. The ultra-wide camera is also a useful tool for capturing photos and videos. It delivers great results even for casual shooters. The backlight HDR option is impressive and performs well in low-light conditions with minimal noise. Compared to the competitors' mid-range devices, the Vivo X50 has one of the best night mode performance. This feature is a gem for casual shooters, who are more likely aiming for a beautiful nighttime photo during parties or events. In the camera settings, there is a dedicated 48MP mode with higher resolution and a good sharpness level. It also provides Professional Photography functions such as Motion Snapshot, Supermoon, and Movie Camera. These amazing functions allow the user to take shots or record videos independently or with less manual help.

The Battery of the Vivo X50

It is powered by a non-removable Li-Po 4200 mAh battery. It has a fast-charging 33W Vivo FlashCharge 2.0, where you can achieve full charging from zero to 100 percent in an hour. Conveniently, a fully charged Vivo X50 is bound to last almost all day, which pretty much covers your daily outdoor activities. The rise of fast chargers captures the urgency that modern smartphone users need. Vivo pays attention to this major concern since gaming apps, music apps, social media checks, video recording, and the rear camera's heavy usage uses up battery life quicker than we want them to.

Network, Connectivity, and Sensors of the Vivo X50

This smartphone supports up to two SIM cards, including GSM, HSPA, and LTE network technologies. It may not be the best performing smartphone abroad due to its lack of 5G connectivity. Nevertheless, its connectivity offering is not really a put-down. The Vivo X50 has a good sounding loudspeaker but no radio. Device connectivity includes WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and Hotspot/Tethering. For wired connections, it is compatible with USB Type-C and USB On-The-Go. It features an optical fingerprint reader and a snappy face recognition for unlocking. The other essential sensors are accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, and color spectrum.

Comparing Vivo X50 with Vivo X50 Pro

The most obvious difference between these two devices is the Gimbal camera that Vivo X50 Pro offers. However, in actual usage, the difference is not that significant. Even though the Vivo X50 does not have Gimbal stabilization, it is still equipped with a 4-axis OIS that regulates image stabilization. The Vivo X50 is a smart choice and more budget-friendly, especially if you are not a professional photographer. It also houses the same set of live wallpaper options as the Pro. Both smartphones bear a premium look and feel, but the Vivo X50 Pro has more glam and wow factor with its curved display. If you prefer a flat display, the Vivo X50 is ideal for you. In terms of performance, the Vivo X50 runs with a lower processor but with the top-tier software on both phones, your overall mobile experience is pretty much covered.

Conclusion

It is an exceptional camera phone and an excellent all-around phone. The sound quality from the loudspeaker is great for gaming or watching. The phone design has a youthful, mesmerizing appeal that fits all ages. Vivo X50 is also one of the best smartphones in photo capture and video recording. It delivers impeccable images that compete with rival flagship phones. It also offers an outstanding night mode performance, something that you will expect from a quadruple-camera setup. Undoubtedly, the "Professional Photography" etched on its top skin is a phenomenal Vivo fulfillment.
