Toothbrush: Stay Manual or Go Electric?

Oral hygiene is rarely talked about, but in all honesty, it is something we need to discuss more often. Brushing our teeth should be present in our daily routines by default. And no, this is not just about maintaining those pearly whites, but this is also about overall health. Practicing good oral hygiene lessens the risk of developing gum disease, which in some cases, becomes a cause of other serious health conditions. Given that, choosing the right toothbrush is key to a healthier life. Growing up, you should be able to have your fair share of toothbrushes; from small-colorful toothbrushes with the soft bristles to the big complicated toothbrushes with the high-tech features. With that said, you should be able to determine which works for you. However, due to the extensive collection of oral hygiene products available in the market, choosing what's best is not an easy task.

Manual Toothbrushes vs. Electric Toothbrushes

Manual toothbrushes might be old and boring, but they still get the job done right. Also, they are everywhere, they are accessible and cheap. These guys are low maintenance, they can be used anywhere and anytime. There are manual toothbrushes for kids to adults, and there are some created for different mouth conditions. However, as recommended by dentists, all toothbrushes, should be replaced every three to four months. In the case of a manual toothbrush, the whole thing needs to be disposed of, which is not a good thing for the environment as it adds up to the plastic crisis that we are currently facing.

On the other hand, electric toothbrush bristles vibrate or rotate to remove plaque from your teeth and gums. According to reviews and studies, electric toothbrushes are better at cleaning teeth. This electronic movement is more precise, and it can get all the nitty-gritty off of your mouth. These guys do not compel you to add pressure while brushing, so it is gentler on your gums. The automatic movement is also good for those with limited mobility like carpal tunnel, arthritis, and developmental disabilities. Plus, some of these brushes come with a timer. Electric toothbrushes only need the brush itself replaced, not the whole thing, so it means less plastic waste. However, electric toothbrushes can get very expensive and the replacement brushes can be hard to find.

In conclusion, choosing between a manual or an electric toothbrush is ultimately down to preference. For those who can go the extra mile upgrade their old manual toothbrush to an electric toothbrush, why not. But for those who would prefer to keep purchasing a manual toothbrush, it is okay as well. For as long as we keep in mind the importance of maintaining good oral health, we should be fine.

Toothbrushing Tips and Tricks

First and foremost, choose a toothbrush that is in the right size for your mouth. Second, avoid hard bristles, these can damage your gums. Third, multi-level angled bristles are better than one-level flat bristles. Fourth, choose a fluoride toothpaste that suits your needs. Fifth, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth and gums. Sixth, gently brush all the surfaces of your teeth for 2-minutes. Seventh, always rinse your brushes thoroughly, it is also best to keep it covered and away from the toilet, which spreads germs when flushing. Eight, mouthwashes are optional and should never be a replacement for brushing. Lastly, floss once every day, before or after brushing. Having a healthy oral hygiene routine can save you a fortune and a lot of pain. Truly, a healthy mouth is equivalent to a beautiful smile.
