How Does Sunscreen Really Work?

We are convinced that wearing sunscreen protects our skin from harmful UV rays. But how does it work and why do we need to apply or reapply them one at a time especially during hot summer days?

The UVA and UVB

UVA and UVB are short high energy wavelengths that hit upon the most surface layer of our skin which is the dermis. If the dermis is irritated, this causes redness, swelling, or in one simple word, the sunburn. This irritation causes the freckles, age spots, or any kind of skin pigmentation. UVA can penetrate more deeply into your skin than UVB. It can affect the DNA of the cells of the dermis. This causes wrinkles and sagging of the skin. UVA has a more long-term damaging effect on the skin.

We have heard chemical and physical sunscreen but don't know the difference between them. Let's look a little deeper into them and see how they actually work.

Chemical sunscreen contains chemical ingredients such as Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, and many more others. They work by absorbing the UV rays as it enters the skin which then changed into heat and is released to the skin as infrared rays. They are more lightweight, blendable, which means you can apply them anytime every day really easy and works better under makeup. But these types of sunscreens can irritate sensitive skin because of its chemical ingredients.

Physical sunscreen, on the other hand, contains natural ingredients like zinc and titanium oxide. They often leave white casts on the face because of its zinc oxide and titanium dioxide ingredients. These are the active minerals that sit on top of the skin to reflect the incoming UV rays. The advantage of these types of sunscreen is that they work immediately after application and are better for sensitive skin. On the other hand, they are often heavier and more visible than chemical sunscreen. They can not be a good partner to your makeup because it usually doesn't layer well with foundations and other base products.

What is an SPF?

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a relative measure of how well a sunscreen will protect your skin from UVB rays. In other words, it is a number that tells you how long the sun's UV radiation would take to burn your skin. To get protected, we have to use sunscreens with a broad spectrum. Some assume that the higher the SPF value is, the higher the protection they can get. But actually, SPF 50 sunscreen blocks 98 percent of UVB rays while SPF 100 blocks 99 percent. There is only a 1% difference. When choosing the right sunscreen for your skin, it is important to remember that no sunscreen blocks 100 percent of UVB rays and ultra-high SPFs are not much more protective than SPFs of 30 or 50. Do not force yourself to search for a sunscreen with SPF's that is higher than 50.
