About realme 5i

Realme 5i, the Elite Mid-range Contender

The communications market is an area of global development that has shown considerable growth in the past few years. As a competitor in such a market, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to make a name for one's self. Fortunately for any start-up or newly developed communications company, there will always be a market for well-performing handsets sold at an affordable price. Realme is a company that has set out to fill the market need for such low-price, mid-quality handsets. What sets this company apart from the many other China-based manufacturers, is their express goal to focus solely on dominating the mid-range segment of the mobile device market with handsets that compete by producing high value for money.

In pursuit of this goal, the company has released the Realme 5i; and having made waves with their various other releases, the mid-range consumer base is alight with excitement over their newest product. Considering it has a large screen, a decent battery, a comprehensive processor, as well as a high-quality, mid-range camera array, the attention this phone garners from the community is well deserved. Shipping in a yellow box, per typical Realme fashion, is the device, a MicroUSB cable, as well as a 5V/2A charging adapter. New buyers of the Realme brand may be surprised at the bare-essentials approach the company takes when it comes to accompanying phone accessories, but consumers must understand that at such a low price, the company must make sacrifices in certain production aspects. Much to the user's delight, however, the phone easily makes up for this with its overall performance.

Pros:

  • Low price
  • Great camera quality
  • Large capacity battery
  • High quality fit and finish
  • Great value for money
  • Comes equipped with a headphone jack
  • Decent Qualcomm processor

Cons:

  • Still uses MicroUSB connection
  • The front camera is only 8MP
  • Does not utilize fast charging
  • One charge does not last a full day
  • The display uses LCD as opposed to LED

High-quality design at an entry-level price

A phone's looks can have a serious effect on how well it sells, because even if a phone performs well it may not necessarily sell well if it looks like it was cobbled together by a child. In the looks department, the Realme 5i passes with flying colors, be it Aqua Blue, or Forest Green, the phone looks wonderful. Setting it apart from its other competitors is the back panel design pattern dubbed the "Sunrise Design" by the makers at Realme; this design incorporates holographic texture gradients which cause the back of the phone to take on a sunray appearance. Instead of opting for the typical glossy back finish, the manufacturers opted for a matte finish in the hopes of making the phone easier to wield with one hand; this design element paid off as many tech reviewers and consumers alike have reported that the phone is easy to grip and does not slide out of the hand easily.

The matte finish on the phone also ensures that those pesky fingerprints and scratches will be less of a problem, for the unavoidable phone drop or two, the back of the phone is less likely to show signs of wear. As for the front, the phone is guarded by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 along with a polycarbonate frame for the sides of the device. And on the off chance the phone gets wet, the user can rest easy as it is splash resistant. On the whole, this mobile device looks excellent and feels solid in the hand, for right-handed users the volume rockers sit near the user's index finger while the power button is easily toggled by the user's thumb. The ergonomics of this phone were well thought out, and despite being a budget phone, it looks and feels like so much more.

A budget phone, with an immersive display

One true make or break segment for smartphones is undoubtedly the display. Nothing can make a phone feel cheaper than a lackluster screen with barely any color accuracy or range. Though it may not compete with the upper-tier of the mid-range market, the 5i's display does well to satisfy the needs of consumers who wish to have a smartphone that can surf the web, display media, and handle the occasional mobile game. With an IPS LCD display that utilizes 720p HD+ resolution, this particular handset wins no awards for groundbreaking clarity, but surprisingly the phone still delivers a pleasant viewing experience. This is due to the large viewing area that the user is greeted with every time the phone is opened, at 6.5 inches there is plenty to see and the teardrop notch which houses the selfie camera does little to hinder the user's viewing experiences. An area that this display truly shines in is brightness, literally; the screen on this piece of kit is astonishingly bright, even at lower levels, the screen shines like nobody's business. Some reviewers have gone so far as to caution people with using the full brightness setting in dark environments. For the outdoors, viewers can watch Netflix, Youtube, and any other media service to their heart's content as the ultra-bright display has no trouble outside even when bathed in sunlight.

A chip off the high-end block

There are many names that have gained renown through the years as premier SoC (system on a chip) manufacturers. One name, in particular, has supplied many of the processors for Asia's biggest smartphone companies, this supplier is none other than Qualcomm. Powering Realme's budget, midlevel marauder, the 5i is the Snapdragon 665 octa-core processor. The cores in the phone's processor are much like brains and this particular piece of equipment has eight brains to handle the processing load that the device puts out.

What this translates to is smooth transitions between apps and fluid movement with gestures. Despite having a decent processor, users should avoid running multiple apps at once as the phone will show lag and latency at certain points if the processor is overly taxed. Mobile gaming is a delight with this smartphone, reviewers report playing mobile games such as PUBG, and Call of Duty with little to no issue provided the game settings were at mid-level. Switching to high-level settings would produce lag and frame skips at times but on the whole, the phone does well overall and at such a low price point users will find it difficult to poke fun at the 5i and the mid-range performance it puts up despite only being an entry-level phone.

User-friendly functionality

As is the case with many smartphone manufacturers, Realme has opted to use customized software derived from the already excellent Android 9 Pie software. The updated iteration utilized by the 5i is ColorOS 6.0, unlike previous versions, ColorOS 6.0 looks more similar to the traditional android user interface as opposed to the IOS look sported by earlier ColorOS iterations. In line with the more Android oriented user interface, the control center can be accessed with a downward swipe from this panel the user can adjust brightness, and enable or disable wifi connection, data, airplane mode, do not disturb mode and many other features. The standard navigation keys for multitasking, home, and back are displayed on the screen however the user can choose to use gestures to free up display space if the need arises. Overall the User interface is comprehensive in its reworked design, the transitions and movements are smooth with few stalls or errors. The operating system also comes equipped with various gestures such as a split-screen view which can be activated by sliding three fingers upwards from the bottom of the phone. In some cases, the gestures fail to register however this is not due to a fault in the processor, most likely this stems from issues in the software itself.

Thankfully however the few problems that exist are minor and will most likely be remedied through updates in the future.

Not two, not three, but four

A tri-lens camera array is usually the norm when it comes to most mid, to high-end smartphones, but this is certainly not the case when it comes to this bargain piece of equipment. The Realme 5i's cameras consist of a primary 12MP wide lens, an 8MP ultrawide lens, a 2MP macro lens, as well as a 2MP depth sensor. To supplement this impressively diverse set of cameras is an equally diverse camera software offering Panorama, HDR, Expert, Portrait Mode, Chroma Boost, Nightscape, Time Lapse, Slo-Mo, as well as Ultra Macro. To say that the camera software suite offered by this device is comprehensive would be an understatement. As if the plethora of shooting modes was not enough, the 5i comes standard with a great number of filters to help the user capture and edit each moment. Aiding in the editing of each shot is the handset's camera AI which performs generally well, although some users reported problems with using the night mode in the presence of strong light sources such as street lamps, this can easily be fixed in post through editing, if the consumer ever finds the task of editing too tiring, the camera's chroma boost feature takes all the hassle out of photo adjustments. The only true downside to the camera of this phone is the selfie camera which is the only 8MP, though the shots from the front camera are decent, some users find it lacks detail, luckily the camera AI does well to fix this through digital sharpening. For all its worth, the 5i's camera is excellent and it has the added bragging rights of being the only quad-lens phone at its price point.

Power so plentiful, there's enough to share

Few phones can boast a battery capacity of 5,000mAh, and among these few, there are almost no phones that support reverse charging. Astonishingly, the 5i does both, in particularly stunning fashion considering its price tag. With such a large battery users can enjoy ludicrously long lengths of phone use which not even the competition can offer. Most manufacturers aim to create a "one day phone", in lay man's terms, a phone which has battery life sufficient to keep it running for a whole day.

The talented minds at Realme have gone above and beyond the one-day goal and instead created what is essentially a "two-day phone". Of course, the two days of battery life take into account medium to low phone usage.

However, the phone still delivers a relatively long period of usage even when used for gaming or mobile internet surfing via data. When tested for continuous media playback, this piece of kit clocked about 25 hours of nonstop playback, truly impressive and to be expected considering the sheer size of the battery. Yet another feature of the 5i's gargantuan battery is the reverse charging capability which essentially turns the phone into a power bank for other devices. It should be noted this battery is not without fault, due to its large size and the lack of fast charging the full charging time of the battery takes around 2 to 3 hours to charge, with this in mind users would do well to keep the phone charged to a certain degree to avoid long waiting periods.

All the connective bells and whistles

With such all-around great specifications, users can expect an equally pleasing performance from the handset's connection services and capabilities. The device supports WiFi and mobile data connection up to LTE on all major frequencies. Additionally, the phone is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0, this allows the user to connect with virtually any Bluetooth enabled device. For location services, reviewers report excellent accuracy with pinpoint location, unsurprising since the phone makes use of GPS, Beidou, Galileo, and, A-GPS. Connecting the user to the phone is a plethora of gyroscopic, light, and movement sensors as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which works wonderfully.

A budget phone with a big reputation

Looking at the phone from the inside out, it is near impossible to speak badly about the device as a whole. The few flaws it presents are also in a sense, canceled out by the numerous benefits this smartphone carries be it the monstrous battery size, the upper-tier camera array, or the high-quality fit and finish. Users who are partial to higher-end smartphones would be surprised and even pleased at the performance that this particular entry-level phone produces and they can revel in the satisfaction of purchasing such a high value-for-money device. Whether it be gaming, media viewing, or photography, the Realme 5i will not disappoint.
