Best 5G Smartphones in the Philippines 2021

More and more 5G-equipped smartphones are launching in the Philippines. Here we have the list of available 5G phones being catered in the local market.

Featured 27 products in this article

The world is now moving towards 5G connectivity. However, it will take some more time before every market embraces this next-gen connectivity. Fortunately, the Philippines has already made a leap to the 5G era.

Globe, the largest mobile network in the country, first launched 5G last year, making the Philippines the third country in Asia to experience the new technology after Japan and South Korea.

Nevertheless, 5G in the Philippines is currently available only in some select urban areas, and still a few years away from fully penetrating the entire archipelago. But the manufacturers have already launched several 5G smartphones in the country, making their devices future-ready for further 5G rollouts.

5G technology promises blazing speeds, faster downloads, lower latency, and many more benefits. As a result, smartphones with 5G connectivity have to be technologically advanced to cater to the premium 5G experience.

Initially, 5G phones were only available in the flagship segment. But, of late, price is becoming more of a consideration, as smartphone vendors have started offering 5G smartphones in the mid-range segment as well.

If you want to own a 5G smartphone but wonder which are the 5G phones currently available in the Philippines, we have compiled a list. The list includes phones from different brands with varied specs and features falling in various price ranges They are all new and launched this year, with a majority of them launched in June and August.

  • 108MP fantastic quad-rear camera
  • 8K video recording
  • Juicy 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging

Cons

The Galaxy S20 Ultra made it to the Philippines in March this year and has been one of the most redoubtable flagships available to purchase since then.

It brings a whopping 108MP sensor as part of the quad-rear-camera setup that also includes a 48MP telephoto sensor capable of 4x optical zoom and 10x hybrid zoom. But the camera's most fantastic feature is the Super-Resolution Zoom that offers 100x digital zoom. The selfie camera is upgraded to 40MP.

The phone flaunts a 6.9-inch QHD+ screen, one of the biggest in its class. The Dynamic AMOLED curved display offers a 120Hz refresh rate; however, it applies only to the FHD+ content; the QHD+ content still runs on standard 60Hz.

15. HUAWEI P40/P40 Pro/P40 Pro+

Pros

  • OLED display
  • 90Hz refresh rate (P40 Pro and P40 Pro+)
  • Kirin 990 SoC ensures enough power
  • Promising cameras
  • Large battery capacity with fast charging (P40 Pro and P40 Pro+)

Cons

  • No Google Play Services
  • No 3.5mm audio jack
  • No wireless charging feature (P40)

This year the HUAWEI P40 series includes the P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+, and all of them are equipped with 5G. Launched locally in April, these premium devices are powered by a Kirin 990 5G chipset and come with an OLED display, 8GB RAM, UFS 3.0 storage, and an under-display fingerprint scanner. They also bring a 50MP primary camera, 32MP selfie shooter, as well as fast charging support.

The HUAWEI P40 is the lower rung amongst the three. It has a 6.1-inch flat display with a standard 60Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution. The back gets a triple-camera setup headlined by a 50MP primary sensory while a 3,800mAh battery fuels the device aided by 22.5W fast charging.

On the other hand, the HUAWEI P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ feature the same 6.58-inch curved display with 1,200 x 2,640 resolution and a better 90Hz refresh rate. They have the same size 4,200mAh battery and 40W wired fast charging support, but a different fast wireless charging rate- 27W for the P40 Pro and 40W for P40 Pro+. The 27W fast wireless reverse charging is, however, the same for both the phones.

Another significant difference lies in the rear camera department. The P40 Pro has a quad-camera setup comprising a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP telephoto sensor with OIS and 5x optical zoom, a 40MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a ToF 3D depth sensor.

The P40 Pro+ rear camera setup is even better, consisting of a 50MP primary sensor, an 8MP telephoto sensor with OIS and 3x optical zoom, a 40MP ultra-wide sensor, and a ToF 3D depth sensor. Also, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ get an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, while the P40 makes do with a lesser IP53 rating for dust and splash resistance.

  • Promising cameras
  • Kirin 990 SoC ensures enough power

Cons

  • No wireless charging
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack

Launched in the Philippines in April, the HUAWEI Mate Xs 5G is essentially an upgraded version of the HUAWEI Mate X folding smartphone. It looks similar to the previous model but uses a new Falcon Wing hinge design that promises to make the hinge stronger.

The Mate Xs features an 8-inch plastic OLED display, which, when folded in book style, turns into a 6.6-inch display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio on the front and another into a 6.36-inch display with a 25:9 aspect ratio at the back.

The folding phone integrates a Kirin 990 5G SoC paired with 8GB RAM and 512GB internal storage. A 4,500mAh battery with 55W fast charging powers the smartphone, which HUAWEI claims can fill up to 85% in just 30 minutes.

In terms of cameras, the Mate Xs 5G uses a combination of a 40MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, an 8MP telephoto sensor, and a 3D depth-sensing sensor. One can use these cameras to take selfies as well.

Pros

  • Above-average displays
  • Impressive cameras
  • 50W wired fast charging (Mi 10 Pro)
  • Flagship chipset

Cons

  • Only 90Hz refresh rates
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack
  • No microSD support for storage expansion

The Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro arrived in June this year. Both phones are identical only barring a few differences. Both have a curved AMOLED display and sport quad-camera setups at the back to compete with rivals.

Both phones run MIUI 10 based on Android 10 out-of-the-box. Both 5G phones are powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC and mount a 20MP front-facing camera.

At the back, the Mi 10 sports a 108MP primary + 13MP ultra-wide + 2MP macro + 2MP depth camera setup while the Mi 10 Pro embraces a 108MP primary + 12MP telephoto + 8MP telephoto + 20MP ultra-wide rear camera array. So both the phones differ in rear cameras in big way.

Upfront, both smartphones feature a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, but there are different batteries to support the displays. The Mi 10 uses a 4,780mAh battery while the Mi 10 Pro packs a smaller 4,500mAh battery. Nevertheless, the Mi 10 Pro makes it up with a hefty 50W fast charging. Both phones support wireless charging as well.

The Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro come with up to 12GB RAM, but the internal storage maxes out at 512GB for the Mi 10 Pro.

12. HUAWEI nova 7 SE 5G

Pros

  • Impressive camera for its price
  • Smooth performance
  • Good battery life with 40W fast charging

Cons

  • LCD display
  • No wireless charging
  • No telephoto lens

The HUAWEI nova 7 SE 5G arrived in the Philippines in June. The nova 7 SE 5G is the most affordable in the nova 7 series of phones. It comes as a watered-down version of the vanilla nova 7 with a 6.5-inch LCD display with FHD+ resolution and a punch-hole cutout that hides a 16MP selfie camera. The fingerprint scanner is side-mounted since it doesn't sport an OLED panel.

The nova 7 SE mounts a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. Unlike the other nova 7 series phones, it doesn't have a telephoto lens.

The nova 7 SE is driven by the Kirin 820 5G chipset paired with 8GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. The battery is rated at 4,000mAh and offers 40W fast charging, capable of 70% charge in 30 minutes according to HUAWEI.

  • Flagship chipset
  • Impressive camera
  • 8K video recording
  • Large battery capacity with fast charging

Cons

  • No wireless charging
  • Standard 60Hz refresh rate
  • No support for storage expansion

The Xiaomi POCO F2 Pro effectively strikes a balance between the market price and premium experience. Locally, the POCO F2 Pro went on sale in June. It uses a pop-up selfie slider instead of a cutout or a notch on a 6.67-inch display that pushes FHD+ resolution.

The PCOCO F2 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC coupled with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 internal storage. Aiding the performance is the Vapor Chamber cooling system, which is larger than the competitors.

A 64MP quad-rear camera helps you click impressive images and, quite notably, capture 8K videos. The battery comes at 4,700mAh and offers 30W fast charging support.

The POCO F2 Pro skips the microSD slot, but the traditional 3.5mm audio jack is intact. The display refreshes at a standard 60Hz rate; however, the touch sampling rate is amped up to 180Hz.

The HUAWEI nova 7 5G is the souped-up version of the nova 7 SE 5G, but it arrived in the Philippines in July, a month later after the nova 7 SE 5G went on sale locally.

The nova 7 5G features a 6.53-inch FHD+ OLED display with a single punch-hole cut out for a 32MP selfie camera. The screen has a 20:9 aspect ratio and is equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The camera setup is headlined by a 64MP primary sensor. It also includes an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical and 5x hybrid zoom capabilities. An 8MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP macro sensor round off the quad-rear camera system.

The nova 7 features a Kirin 985 SoC alongside 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB storage. The battery is rated at 4,000mAh capacity, armed with 40W fast charging. In short, the nova 7 5G is a better option than the nova 7 SE 5G, but it also pushes the price up.

7. Samsung Galaxy Note20/Galaxy Note20 Ultra

Pros

  • Power-packed performance
  • Smoother S Pen experience
  • Perfect battery life
  • IP68 rating
  • Excellent cameras, especially the Galaxy Note20 Ultra

Cons

  • 120Hz refresh rate locked at FHD resolution (Galaxy Note20 Ultra)
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Galaxy Note20 is underwhelming for a flagship phone

Samsung's Galaxy Note series has always been known for ensuring an ultra-premium experience to its users. In August, Samsung Philippines launched the Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Note20 Ultra locally.

Although the Galaxy Note20 Ultra is pricey, it is one of the very potent devices available in the market. It features a massive 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 12GB RAM. The cameras are commanding as well, with the triple camera setup led by a 108MP primary sensor.

That doesn't mean that the 6.7-inch vanilla Galaxy Note20 is any slouch. Like the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, it sports the same Exynos 990 processor (Snapdragon 865+ in some select markets) and a much improved S Pen. You also get all the premium trappings like IP68 rating and wireless charging; however, the less expensive Galaxy Note20 has an FHD+ screen with a 60Hz refresh rate and is surprisingly built out of plastic.

1. Apple iPhone 12 Series

Pros

  • Upgraded camera
  • Upgraded batteries
  • Fast wireless charging speed
  • A14 Bionic chipset
  • IP68 rating
  • All models support wireless charging

Cons

  • No external storage support
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Dated notch display
  • No high refresh rate
  • No free charging brick or EarPods

This year, Apple didn't just announce three, but four iPhone models including a model that doesn't have competition in the Android world.

This year's iPhone series, the iPhone 12 is comprised of the iPhone 12 mini, the vanilla iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. All iPhones come equipped with 5G-connectivity and Apple's latest A14 Bionic chipset. The similarities don't end there. All iPhones pack a beautiful Super Retina XDR OLED and an upgraded camera system. There's a dual-camera setup for the iPhone mini and iPhone 12, and a triple-camera setup with LiDAR scanner for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Additionally, the iPhone 12 Pro Max gets a better camera setup as it sports Apple's newest sensor-shift OIS feature.

Sadly, this year's iPhone still sports a dated notch display and doesn't come with a high refresh rate.

Although there are no specific dates yet, the iPhone 12 series is bound to arrive in the Philippines in the following months. As a matter of fact, as of this writing, Globe Telcom and Smart have already started teasing the phones for their postpaid plan.

Conclusion

5G connectivity has the potential to change our lifestyle with its fast internet connection, but we also have to wait to see how affordable it can get for ordinary customers.

We are already seeing how 5G technology is now breaking into the affordable mid-range segment. The OnePlus Nord, the POCO F2 Pro, the nova 7 SE 5G, and the vivo X50 Pro 5G mid-rangers are an example of that.

More affordable smartphones with 5G are also waiting in the wings. They may launch in the next couple of months, so we will be having a multitude of options soon.

However, if you want to savor the new exciting technology right away, you can choose one amongst the several 5G smartphones we discussed in this article. But before buying, make sure you are in the 5G zone since the technology is in a nascent stage in the Philippines and it might take a few more years for service providers to cover the entire country.

If we set aside the 5G consideration for a moment, the smartphones in our compilation can still make a splendid choice as the best overall performing smartphones in the Philippines.
