Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact prototype surfaces, MWC launch possible

Although Sony remained mum as to what devices it will launch on its press event on February 26, several names have appeared in mobile space. One of them is the Xperia XZ2 Compact which recently starred in a prototype leak revealing its curved back panel.

Sony has already disclosed its plans to hold a press conference on February 26, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. However, it did not reveal what devices it is bound to launch at the event. We assume that the upcoming lineup comprises of both flagship and mid-range smartphones. What might it include? Recent reports suggest that Sony will unveil the Xperia XZ2 Compact. Usually, the Japanese tech maker announces the Compact series phones in the second half of the year. This time, though, Sony might want to advance the arrival of the Compact handset, deviating from the usual launch schedule.

Adding weight to the speculation, some prototype images of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact recently surfaced online. The photographs show the device sitting next to the Xperia Z5 Compact. If we look closely, we can notice that the Xperia XZ2 Compact sports a curved back panel. The leaker of the images also reveals that the smartphone comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and no 3.5 mm headphone jack, just like the Xperia XA2 series. Considering that it is still a prototype, we expect the final product to feature smaller bezels, especially on the top part.

As far as specs are concerned, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is said to sport a 5-inch display. It might have a Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory storage under the hood. Rumors have it that the handset packs a single 19-megapixel rear-camera module and an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper. It is tipped to pack a 3000 mAh battery to keep the lights on. Apart from the Xperia XZ2 Compact, we might also see the regular Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ Pro at the tech show.
