MediaTek has finally unveiled the Dimensity 820 chipset. The latest entry under the Taiwanese chipmaker's now-growing Dimensity 800 series is the beefed-up version of the Dimensity 800 SoC, which was announced just previously.
The MediaTek Dimensity 820 is still built around a 7nm process but boasts a series of upgrades over the Dimensity 800. In the CPU department, for instance, the same octa-core layout (4x Cortex-A76 and 4x Cortex-A55) is evident. But in terms of its accompanying heavyweight cores, these are upped from 2GHz to 2.6GHz.
According to MediaTek, this should give phones which are going to be equipped with the Dimensity 820 a 37% boost in their multi-core performance over their counterparts. Note that most chipsets in the upper mid-range class only offer two heavyweight cores.
The Dimensity 820 is also confirmed to bring a graphical upgrade to the table. From a four-core Mali-G57 GPU, the new chip now packs five-strong cores. The chipmaker claims that this should boost the phones' gaming performance to 33% more than its "direct alternatives." By "alternatives," MediaTek could be meaning to describe the new chip's purported rivals, the Kirin 820 and Snapdragon 768G SoCs.
Another prominent highlight of the Dimensity 820 is its provision on a couple of 5G-related features. These include the 5G dual SIM, 2CC carrier aggregation, and 5G UltraSave tech, which should level up the hosts' connectivity features.
MediaTek's Dimensity 820 can also include 32MP+16MP dual, 80MP single, and up to four concurrent cameras. Support for multi-frame 4K HDR recording is likewise included. The new chip also features APU 3.0 machine learning tech, which should enable more modern and high-profile camera features.
Its support for a 120Hz display refresh rate (akin to the Dimensity 800) and the sub-6GHz 5G are also among its features.
Redmi 10X Series
Xiaomi has already confirmed that variants of its upcoming Redmi 10X series are slated to be equipped with the new processor. The forthcoming lineup from Redmi is alleged to launch with a vanilla Redmi 10X LTE, Redmi 10X 5G, and Redmi 10X Pro 5G variants.
The Redmi 10X has been gaining significant traction as of late as the forthcoming lineup is all new to the sub-brand's usual entry-level series of smartphones in terms of features and specifications.
