About Google Nexus
Google Nexus, a Convergence of Tech and Time-tested Quality
In the modern smartphone market, many household names come to mind in circles of discussion regarding the best mobile handset manufacturer. Unsurprisingly, the two brands that are often heard most are without a doubt, Samsung and Apple, what is surprising, however, is how unaware consumers are of Samsung's reliance on another tech-maestro by the name of Google. As the premier Android software manufacturer, it would be an understatement to say that this company knows its way around a phone, having created practically every Android software iteration. By now, Google is well aware of the flaws presented by other smartphone brands, armed with this knowledge the company decided to put its years of technical know-how to use. By unveiling the Nexus line, Google has expressed hopes of succeeding where others have failed by providing consumers with a truly premium line of phones.
History
As the sole developer of Android software, Google has had a considerable influence over the evolution of Android smartphones. Looking to make a more direct impact on this evolution, the company decided to create a premier line of smartphones with the latest and greatest in both software and hardware. With this all-around high-end product in mind, the Nexus line was born in early 2010.
The progenitor of all other Nexus models was dubbed the Nexus One and although by today's standards it is surpassed by even entry-level phones, at the time of its inception this piece of kit was the cream of the technological crop with a revolutionary storage expansion capability as well as a comprehensive Qualcomm Scorpion processor. This device was very successful upon its debut as it provided consumers with extremely convenient user experience while still performing at the flagships standards of its time. As Android software advanced to have a 2D acceleration engine, Google had to redesign the Nexus One successor to render heavier loads without lag or latency. From this necessity, the Nexus S was manufactured, much like its predecessor the Nexus S carried cutting edge technology, but with the accommodation of Android 4's acceleration engine, this model processed data even faster than before. The Nexus family would have a total of 8 members with the final iteration being the Nexus 6P.
Features
This family of smartphones had a lifespan that was considerably shorter than many other lineups, this was largely due to a lack of marketing and proper device advertisement. Were it not for this shortcoming, every iteration of Google's Nexus devices would undoubtedly have dominated the flagship contenders of its respective technological era. From their inception up until their discontinuation with the Nexus 6P, these devices retained Google's vision to combine the best software and hardware in a stylish, user-friendly package.
Although far from perfect, these smartphones were leagues beyond many other contenders thanks to Google's comprehensive experience and intuition regarding Android smartphones. Speedy processing was an innate feature with these handsets, aside from this, members of the Nexus family also had priority access to software updates and were typically always equipped with the latest Android software long before their fellow flagship contenders. For the more tech-savvy users, Nexus devices offered an onboard "bootloader" which allowed comprehensive modification unseen in any other devices. Where other brands discouraged software modification, Google welcomed it openly with the inclusion of the Nexus device bootloader. In terms of onboard camera hardware, the early members of this family of phones were not well equipped, luckily google took notice of this and remedied this issue by providing later models with excellent cameras by 2015 market standards. The late Nexus phones were all-around high-performance pieces of kit that could render high-quality graphics and process large amounts of data with little to no lag or latency, in addition, the phones were excellent selfie shooters and picture takers that allowed users to have a truly premier daily driver device that easily sat in the upper flagship segment of the market.
Pros
- Cutting edge technology at each model's respective time of release
- Overall reliability and user-friendly nature
- Optimized for Android software by Google standards
- Later iterations carried decent camera assemblies
- Every Nexus model comes equipped with a Bootloader for mods
- Nexus phones typically had good battery economy
- The design of each iteration was highly aesthetic yet ergonomic
Cons
- These devices are somewhat outdated by modern standards
- Other viable device options exist at a similar price point
- The Bootloader can be challenging to use for novices
- Modern software may cause lags and latency due to older hardware
Famous Models
・Google Nexus One
Despite ultimately being discontinued and replaced by Google's Pixel line, the many Nexus devices created over the years have allowed the company to fully realize its capability as a flagship smartphone manufacturer. In a way, the Nexus line blazed the trail for the Pixel series by showing consumers that Google could integrate high-spec software with great hardware to produce a device capable of meeting consumer's flagship demands. Were it not for the "can-do" attitude and great performance of the Google Nexus One, the company would certainly have taken a different approach towards smartphone manufacturing.
