About Sony Mobile Phones
Sony Mobile Phones, Veterans in the Game
Sony is known all over the world as a technological giant, manufacturing a wide variety of products such as game consoles, televisions, cameras, laptops, and mobile phones. They were once the most famous mobile phone brand, creating the best looking and most premium mobile phones ever. They also liked to have a good music player on their mobile phones with the Walkman series, and the people surely adored those devices. Now, they have been releasing premium smartphones each year, focused mainly on photography and videography, as well as other productivity use. They are not gaming phones, but they still can game with their fast CPUs. Sony Mobile may not be as famous as the tech giants of today, but they still provide some good competition in the smartphone market.
How It All Started
Sony was a small company with a market share of less than 1% in 2000. Sony merged with Ericsson, a mobile company that was on the brink of closing and formed Sony Ericsson. The newly formed merger's strategy in the fast-evolving world of mobile phones was to release phones that were capable of digital photography and other multimedia functions such as downloading and watching videos. The Sony Ericsson T610, P800 UIQ, and the K700 handset were some of the first-ever mobile phones that had this capability in the world. The company made its first profit in 2003 and continued to grow in the following years with each release of an updated handset. In 2005, the K750i was introduced by the company, a phone that had a 2-megapixel camera, a first of its kind. They also released the W800i, the first Walkman phone capable of 30 hours of music playback. Sony Ericsson also became the global title sponsor for the WTA Tour. In 2007, the company released the Sony Ericsson K850i, the world's first 5-megapixel camera phone, and in the next year, released the C905 - the first 8.1-megapixel camera phone. Following this, they released the first-ever 12-megapixel camera phone named Satio in 2009. Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson continued to experience net losses in 2008 and 2009, failing to compete with the newly unveiled iPhone at the time. It was a tough era for Sony Ericsson and in 2011, Sony bought out the Sony Ericsson company for $1.47 billion, renaming the company as Sony Mobile Communications. Nevertheless, despite incurring losses with its Ericsson lines, Sony Mobile is holding it steady with its latest smartphone releases, and with the success of the company as a whole, their focus on smartphones will hopefully be maintained in the upcoming years.
Famous Series of Sony Mobile Phones
Sony Xperia Series
The Xperia X1 was the first device in the Xperia series. It was released in 2008, and it had a distinct design language with metal sides and a touchscreen. It also had buttons for controlling music and navigation which was similar to Sony mobile phones. This phone was followed by the Xperia X2 in 2009, which had an 8.1 MP camera, a first of its kind. Next was the Xperia X5 Pureness, which was a translucent phone. In 2010, the X10 was released, which was the first Android based Xperia smartphone. This was followed by the X10 mini and the X10 Mini Pro. After this, the Xperia Z smartphone was released, followed by the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact models. Following this was their flagship model, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium which had a 4K HDR display and a dual camera system. The Xperia series continued to grow throughout the years, creating new segments such as the Xperia Play line or the Xperia L line, with the most recent release being the Xperia 5 II released in October 2020.
Famous Models of Sony Mobile Phones
・Sony Xperia 5 II
The Sony Xperia 5 II is the latest and greatest flagship from Sony, designed to compete with the most popular smartphones such as the iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy line. The Xperia 5 II features a 6.1-inch 120Hz OLED panel, a triple camera system capable of 4k120fps video, and a stunning all glass and aluminum design. It is all powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, and the phone has 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage, which is also expandable via microSDXC. It has stereo speakers and even a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is a rare feature these days. It also gets a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C 3.1 port, and IP68 dust and water resistance. The battery is big at 4000 mAh, with support to 21W fast charging. All-in-all, this smartphone is one of the best you can get right now, and the Xperia 5 II starts at $899.00.
・Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
This smartphone could very well be the first-ever gaming phone, being released in 2011. It had a sliding design, with a touch screen display at the front but when you slide it sideways, you will see a controller built-in, similar to that of the PSP or PSVITA. This had a truly unique design and also had a 4-inch screen, a 5-megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM, and a 1500mAh battery. Unfortunately, this was a phone way ahead of its time and was discontinued in the following year. If Sony ever decides to make a gaming phone again that could play modern games, then that will be the best gaming phone ever, but until then, the Xperia PLAY will remain in the history books of Sony.
・Sony Xperia XZ3
This device is one of Sony's highest-rated device of 2020. It features a comfortable 6-inch OLED screen, capable of QHD+ and HDR resolution, which has an 18:9 aspect ratio. This device also has a powerful 19MP motion-eye camera system with 4K HDR video and super-slow motion capture. This phone also has large surround sound front-facing speakers, a feature not much seen on modern phones. This is all powered by the Snapdragon 845 chip which is still fast and powerful even in today's use cases. With 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, the XZ3 is a good all-rounder of a smartphone.
Sony Mobile Phones Finest Features
The best feature of sony mobile phones is their quirky and unique but at the same time premium design. They have made some of the sleekest phones ever, and also made the most special looking ones. In the mobile phone era, Sony made the thinnest and classiest mobile devices, and in the smartphone era, they have made flagship devices too with the best specs. Another feature that made Sony great was that they pushed music listening on all of their devices, especially their Walkman lineup. They provided great audio and threw some music features that cannot be seen anywhere else.
It is indeed saddening that Sony is not as big as it used to be, but with their recent release of the Sony Xperia 5 II, there is still a chance for them to bounce back and recover their market share. Another underrated feature of Sony Mobile phones is that they have been around ever since the beginning, and each year, they evolve their products to meet the demand of the market, and at the same time they add in their own flavor and unique features instead of just copying other companies like Samsung or Apple. Furthermore, Sony has developed its own ecosystem of products, similar to that of Apple's, but for Sony, their mobile phones intertwine with Sony Televisions, Sony speakers, Sony Playstation consoles, and more.
