About HTC Mobile Phones
HTC Mobile Phones, Once a Global Phenomenon
HTC is a veteran when it comes to mobile phones. Having produced some of the first Android smartphones, the company made many best-selling devices for big companies such as Google. After a short period of time, it was able to establish itself as a global brand from just being a third-party manufacturer. The company made a name for itself and competed with the best of the best and through the years, HTC released some of the best handsets ever, becoming well known for producing elegant, high-quality, and premium-feeling devices.
Beginning As An Original Design And Equipment Manufacturer
High Tech Computer Corporation - HTC for short - dealt mainly with designing and manufacturing notebook computers. The company, founded by Cher Wang and H. T. Cho in 1997, began designing touch and wireless hand-held devices in 1998. In 2004, HTC started manufacturing smartphones with Windows Mobile as the operating system, but the company began making a name for itself a year later by joining the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) and releasing the first-ever Android device - the HTC Dream. This smartphone and its Google-made operating system competed directly with Apple's iOS, Microsoft's Windows Phone, Nokia's Symbian, HP's Palm, Samsung's Tizen, and BlackBerry's BlackBerry OS. After this successful release, HTC continued manufacturing Windows Phone devices and even China Mobile devices to greatly increase its market share. Manufacturing devices for big companies indeed worked great for HTC, as it sold over 24.6 million handsets in 2010. HTC was also valued at $3.6 billion in the 2011 Best Global Brands awards, and in Q3 of that year, it became the largest smartphone vendor in the whole United States, beating Apple and Samsung, with a market share of 24%. This enormous gain was topped off in 2014, as the company made $22.1 billion in sales. In 2015, HTC, in collaboration with Valve, unveiled the Vive, which was a virtual reality head-mounted display. It was a relatively successful product, but unfortunately, HTC still had net-losses each year, with its stock price falling by 90% since 2011. With all the competition in the smartphone industry and the troubles it has been facing year after year, HTC has decided to let go of half of its research and design staff as well as smartphone-related intellectual property to Google for $1.1 billion in 2017.
HTC manufactured the first-ever Android phone in 2008, but it wasn't until 2012 when HTC started its own flagship series with the HTC One. It was launched with the idea of having "one" way to think about phones. They released 3 models, the One X, One S, and the One V. The One X was the flagship model and boasted a polycarbonate unibody design. It ran Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich under Sense 4.0 and featured a 4.7-inch display. The device was powered by a quad-core Nvidia chipset. All-in-all, the One X was a great device, but the message behind the One series confused many since they released multiple devices at once. HTC took note of this, and in 2013, relaunched the series with only one handset and called it just the HTC One. The One flaunted a new metal body, a 4.7inch full HD display, and a quad-core processor with 4G/LTE support. The best feature it had was BoomSound, which were two front-facing surround speakers that offered unrivaled audio quality. The One also came with earphones tuned by Beats out of the box for an even finer listening experience. It also featured the UltraPixel camera, which wasn't its best feature but got the job done for most users.
HTC also found success with its Desire line, which has spawned over 30 iterations and spanned over 10 years of the mobile phone industry. This family of devices was made to be affordable while still retaining decent features and specifications. As budget-friendly devices go, HTC was among the first companies to popularize the value-for-money feature, and the success the company found helped bring the Desire series all the way to the modern market. The latest iteration of the HTC Desire Series is the Desire 20 and Desire 20 Pro.
･ HTC Desire 20 Pro
The Desire 20 Pro is one of the latest offerings from HTC. The phone comes with a 6.50-inch display powered by the Snapdragon 665, comes with 6gb of RAM, a 5000mAh battery, and a 5 camera system. This device is feature-packed, even having a microSD card slot and dual-sim trays. This device is a mid-range device, only costing around $300.
･ HTC U20 5G
The U20 5g is HTC's latest flagship smartphone. The device features a 6.80inch display, 8gb of RAM, and a 5000mAh battery. The device is also equipped with a total of 5 cameras, each with different apertures and functions. It also comes with 256gb of storage that can be expanded via microSD and dual-sim card support. What makes this device powerful is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, and as the name suggests, it has support for 5G connectivity for the fastest internet speeds possible. Even though it's a flagship device, it only starts at $640.
HTC Mobile Phones Finest Features
Even though HTC is not as famous as it once was, the company is well known for having released some of the finest and most elegant smartphones in history. In a time when companies such as Samsung and Apple used plastic to house their devices, HTC was one step ahead, creating the very first devices with a full-metal unibody design. This gave their devices a hefty weight and a cold, premium feel. They also made some of the first full-screen handsets, with the smallest bezels at the time. Undoubtedly, one of the things that made them successful was their partnership with other companies, and in 2011, they partnered with Beats to make the best sounding phone speakers in the market and even shipped devices with Beats earphones included. These acts built them a reputation of providing the highest possible quality in all areas of their devices.
The HTC One is a physical embodiment of their core values - it showcased precision, skill, and function. It was not a perfect phone, but its best features overshadowed its weaknesses. A feature that it had which is not anymore seen even today is its BoomSound surround dual-facing speakers which probably sounds better even compared to the latest devices this year. Nowadays, HTC is leaning more on the mid-range market and is slowly regaining back their customers with 5G and multiple camera setups, but people will always remember them as the company who made the most premium devices ever.
