About Google Mobile Phones
Google Mobile Phones, a Historical Revolution
Google is known all over the world for thousands of different reasons. The first thing that comes to mind is Google Search, the most popular search engine ever. We also think of Gmail, Google Drive, and other tools that make our experience on the web more productive and seamless than ever before. But what many of us appreciate about Google is that they innovated and revolutionized the smartphone industry forever, paving the way for other tech companies such as Apple and Samsung to compete and grow in an ever-evolving world of tech. Google has made hundreds of smartphones already, each with a different purpose and target market, but in 2020, Google has made a statement by making very affordable handsets with best-in-class cameras.
Making Business Decisions
Google sought to buy Palo Alto-based Android Inc. back in 2005. Little did they know that this business decision would make them one of the most valuable companies in the world. Google wanted to make a smartphone of its own, so it worked with HTC in 2006 to create a prototype of the "Sooner" mobile phone. It was made to compete with the famous BlackBerry, but instead of being business-focused, it was made to look more casual and approachable. It had a 320x240 display, packed with 64MB of RAM and a 1.3-megapixel camera. It also featured a GPRS radio for the data connection. T-mobile partnered with Google to test the phone, but everything was scratched when the first iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs, making Android co-founder Andy Rubin rethink what the first-ever Android phone should look like.
One year after the unveiling of the famous iPhone, Google released the HTC Dream. The Dream shipped with Android 1.0, which served as the backbone of all things to come. It featured a 3.2-inch touchscreen, came with a trackball and a five-row QWERTY keyboard, and a quartet of navigation keys. Needless to say, it was a feature-packed handset. It also came with a 3.15-megapixel camera which was good in its time. It also had a speedy Qualcomm chipset with 192MB of RAM which kept things snappy and smooth. It was a smartphone that had more features than the iPhone but was way user-friendly than other smartphone platforms. It was not perfect, but it was a device that changed the smartphone market forever.
Google released the HTC Dream and followed that with the release of the HTC Magic, but undoubtedly one of the most famous series of Google was the Nexus. The Nexus One was released in 2010 and was designed to show off what Android was capable of, releasing with Android 2.1 Eclair. It was also the first mobile phone that Google directly sold to customers. It was one of the sleekest devices in its time, featuring a curved two-tone body and a 3.5-inch AMOLED display. It also had a fast Snapdragon chipset with 512MB of RAM, expandable storage, and a decent 5-megapixel rear camera. The Nexus One became an instant go-to for Android and smartphone fans alike. It went on sale through Google's online store for $529. After the successful release of the Nexus One, Google decided to mix it up and proceeded to partner with Samsung with the release of the Nexus S. It launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread in December 2010. The Nexus S boasted a larger 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 16GB storage, and a new NFC feature for fast transfer of files between devices. Not all the specs were upgraded, but generally, the Nexus S was well-received and Google continued to dominate the smartphone market. Continuing its partnership with Samsung, Google unveiled the Galaxy Nexus in October 2011. The device launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and featured a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of Ram, an even larger 4.65-inch display with curved edges and 720p resolution, and features that are in-line with Samsung's Galaxy line. Unfortunately, the sales were "minuscule" and overall it was not as successful as Google hoped it would be. Hoping for a more positive change, Google partnered with LG this time around with the release of the Nexus 4. Predictably, it featured top of the line specs, but what set it apart was its price. It had all the best features for a low price of $299. This was a successful strategy, and reports show that Google had sold 3 million Nexus 4 handsets by the middle of 2013. This launch was followed up by the Nexus 5 still manufactured by LG. A year later, the Nexus 6 was released but this time around it was in partnership with Motorola. This phone had a different approach, making the device feel more premium with higher-end materials. This phone was also well received and overall made the Nexus series one of the best smartphone lineups to date. The latest Nexus phone was the Nexus 6P which was released in 2015.
The latest series of Google is the Pixel lineup. Having released smartphones in partnership with 3rd-party companies for so many years, Google learned that they had to take a different approach and manufacture and design phones of their own. Thus, the Google Pixel was born. It was released in 2016 and was a very successful product. To this day, the Pixel lineup is still popular and well-received year-in and year-out.
・Google Pixel 5
Pixel 5 is the latest smartphone from Google. It was launched on September 30, 2020. This phone features a 6-inch display with a resolution of 1080x2340 and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765g. It also comes with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a large 4080mAh battery, IP68 water, and dust resistance, and supports wireless charging. the best feature is its camera system, with a 12.2MP primary camera and a secondary 16MP camera for different shooting styles, with phase detection autofocus.
・Google Pixel 4a 5G
This device was released together with the Pixel 5 and features similar specs, but the 4a 5g, as the name suggests, supports 5g connectivity for the fastest data speeds. This device also has a slightly larger 6.20-inch display and a slightly smaller 3885mAh battery. This device directly competes with the latest smartphones from Samsung and LG, with "5G" being its best feature alongside its top-notch camera system.
Google Mobile Phones Finest Features
Google's release of the Nexus lineup focused more on the build quality and the bloat-free OS the devices came with. In recent years, Google still produced phones of the highest quality and fastest UIs, but undoubtedly, Google's focus was mainly on making the best camera system on a smartphone, and they succeeded. With the release of the first-ever Pixel, users were surprised to see that the camera produces the highest quality photos. The Pixel also had one of the best portrait modes, even beating the iPhone in some use cases. To this date, the camera system of the Pixel is one of - if not THE, best.
Another amazing feature of google phones is the price. Instead of competing with the high-end market of Samsung and Apple, with phones costing more than $1000, Google took a different approach. The Pixel 4a, released in September 2020, starts at only $349, which is an unbeatable price for the performance and quality that you get. As tech reviewers say, good phones are getting cheap, and cheap phones are getting good, and Google is right there at the top of it all.
