Samsung has been manufacturing the most advanced memory modules in the world for more than two decades and was manufacturing 256MB memory DIMMs before when the rest of the world was still using 32MB modules. Today, Samsung is still the world leader and their 6GB chips are being used in modern flagship smartphones when the rest of the pack is still in the 2GB to 4GB range.
Now, Samsung is introducing the world's first removable memory card that uses the JEDEC Universal Flash Storage 1.0 Card Extension Standard. The technology is designed for use in mobile devices like DSLRs, 3D Virtual Reality cameras, action cameras, and drones. The UFS cards come in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB sizes.
The new UFC cards will provide a much-improved user experience in particular for those who are working with high-resolution video and images. It has five times the sequential read performance of a typical microSD card, hitting speeds up to 530MB/s, which is already at the speed of an SATA solid state drive.
A 5GB Full HD movie can be loaded up in around 10 seconds, whereas a Class 10 UHS-1 microSD card working at 95MB/s would take over 50 seconds to do the same.
The random read performance is also much improved at 40,000 IOPs, which is 20 times higher than that of a UHS-1 microSD card at 1,800 IOPS. The UFS cards are able to achieve this high level of performance using multiple command and command queuing feature which enables simultaneous read and write processes through separate dedicated paths, more than doubling the throughput.
Samsung continues to provide leadership in the memory space. Samsung's latest contribution is the completion of the Universal Flash Storage Association's (USFA) certification program for evaluating electrical and functional specifications in the compatibility of UFS cards.
We'll be certain to see even more impressive solutions in the future from Samsung, as the world continues to move towards Virtual Reality and the need for high capacity 360 degree VR cameras becomes more common.
