Wind Family
The instruments that belong to this family were made out entirely of wood. Nowadays, they come with a variety of different designs made of wood, metal, plastic, or a combination. In general, this family is basically made with narrow pipes that have holes, and an opening at the bottom, and a mouthpiece at the top. The way you play them is by blowing air into a mouthpiece and opening or closing the holes to change pitch with your fingers. Most woodwind instruments have holes covered by metal caps known as keys. In contrast to the clarinet, the oboe and bassoon use two pieces joined up to make one double reed. The smaller woodwinds play higher notes while the larger and longer instruments are able to play lower notes. If you follow the order for the highest sounding instruments to the lowest, then the woodwind family includes the piccolo, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, and contrabassoon.
Choosing The Right Instrument to Play
・Should you rent one?
Renting an instrument is generally a good idea to help and see if your child wants the instrument or another one. Make sure the plan allows you to stop after 3-6 months without having to pay a penalty. It usually takes that much time to decide. Besides that, renting does not make any economic sense. Most rent-to-own contracts look more like high-interest loans that you may never be able to pay back. The interest rate on the instrument is quite high, and the retail list price is the purchase price. Those are the highest prices you can pay for an instrument.
・Should it be new or used?
Again, it depends. If money is no object, then it's better to go ahead and buy yourself a good instrument. But before doing so make sure to read up on brands, and what instrument to help you decide on what you are getting. If you're on a budget, then finding the right quality instrument is the best decision to go, because Woodwind instruments are like machines. Some of the parts it has tended to completely wear out but can still be easily replaced by a professional technician. As long as the main parts of the horn are all in good shape, it can then be remade and turn into a new one. With this in mind, you would be able to save a lot more by opting to get a used instrument that's in good playing condition.
・What to choose?
There are thousands of cheap woodwind instruments that are being sold on the market and online and many of these instruments are made in China. They seem like a good deal. For $79.00 a brand new clarinet? And paying $229 a saxophone that's quite a haul already. But remember since they are made in China most of these instruments are flimsy and poorly designed. Since they are put together incorrectly, they will never be in tune. Despite having extremely soft keys, the instruments become unadjustable if they flex. These pads have ridiculously low prices and are made from cheap materials. It is better to buy instruments from well-known names instead of lower-quality brands.
Types of Woodwind Instruments
・Flute
Original flutes were made of wood, stone, clay, or hollow bamboo reeds. They are among the oldest among all instruments that are capable of producing a pitched sound. Flutes today are either made from Gold, Silver, or even platinum; and generally, in an orchestra, you can find 2 to 4 flutes. A standard flute measures in just a little two feet, and oftentimes is accompanied by a melody. To use a Flute properly you need to hold the flute sideways and blow across the mouthpiece. Basically the same process as blowing in a bottle. And by opening your fingers off and on the keys you are able to change the sound and pitch.
・Oboe
Oboes are typically black cylinders longer than 2 feet with metal keys covering their openings. Their mouthpieces have double reeds which vibrate when you blow into them. This movement in the oboe's interior, caused by the vibration of the reed, produces sound. You can play it by holding the oboe upright, blowing through the double reed with both his hands and adjusting the pitch with the keys. An orchestra usually has between 2 and 4 oboes, and they can produce a wide variety of pitches, from haunting sounds to warm, velvety smooth tones, which makes the oboe sound so distinctive. The first oboist is not only responsible for playing in the orchestra, but also for tuning it before each concert. Be sure to listen to the note "A" the oboe plays before the piece is played.
・English Horn
Despite its name, this instrument is not English or a horn. But rather this instrument is capable of using a double reed and is played similarly, to its relative the Oboe. The tube of the instrument is a bit wider and it is longer than an oboe. When you play the bottom part of the English horn, the tone it will let out is of a warmer fuller sound and this is because it is let out into a rounded bell shape. A French horn's pitch range is smaller since it's larger than an oboe. An oboist may also play the English horn when necessary.
・Clarinet
Contrary to popular belief, a clarinet's mouthpiece usually uses two reeds rather than the single in an oboe. In general, clarinets are available in a wide variety of sizes with the standard one coming in at just over 2 feet long. Some pieces of music call for the clarinetist to employ more than one type of clarinet. The orchestra's two to four clarinets play both melodies and harmony, and the bottom notes of the clarinets have a rich dark tone, while the top notes are bright and resonant.
