About Apple MacBook Pro

Now on its 3rd generation, the MacBook Pro is a brand of portable laptop computers from Apple, Inc. The line was first introduced last January 2006 and replaced the PowerBook G4. It belongs to the MacBook Family and is considered as the high end model.

Popularity in the Philippines

The Apple laptop computers have always been popular in the country. For the Filipinos, owning a MacBook Pro is like a status symbol especially if you consider the price. Although owning one means having to get used to a whole new user interface since the laptop is not Windows-based, it continues to be one of the most coveted laptops in the market today. With the high demand for the other Apple products i.e. iPhone and IPad, some consumers have decided to go with the MacBook Pro as well to make sure all features are maximised to their full potential. Plus, syncing the devices is definitely a lot more seamless and efficient.

Product Features

The first generation of MacBook Pro was a 15-inch and 17-inch model and used Intel Core processors for the first time. The second generation was released in 2008 and featured a 15-inch MacBook Pro with aluminium unibody enclosure and tapered sides. The laptop was also thinner but wider and deeper as compared to its predecessor. It also had a widescreen display and high-gloss screen which was covered by reflective glass finish. Its track pad was enlarged allowing for more multi touch gestures and scrolling. A second 17-inch model was introduced a year later.

At present, the MacBook Pro line consists of 13-inch and 15-inch options with or without Retina display and of varying features. The cheapest of the collection is the 13-inch 2.5GHz dual core Intel Core i5 model with turbo boost up to 3.1 GHz. It has a 4GB RAM and 500GB hard drive and built in battery which can last up to 7 hours. It costs P59990.

The other 13-inch models come with Retina Display, 2560X1600 resolution and run on 2.4GHz or 2.6GHz dual core Intel Core i5 processors. RAM capacity range from 4GB to 8GB and hard drive memory from 128 GB to 512GB (PCIe-based flash storage). Prices for these laptops are between P67990 and P92990. There are 2 models with 15-inch screens and 2880X1800 pixel resolution. The first one has a 2.0GHz quad core Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB PCIe-based flash storage. Price tag is P102990. The other model boast of 2.3GHz quad core Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB RAM and 512 PCIe-based flash storage. Price tag is P132990.

All models with Retina display come with 720p FaceTime HD camera, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, stereo speakers, dual microphones and headphone port. They are powered by the OS X Maverick, deemed to be the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. It includes AirDrop, AirPlay, Facebook Integration, Twitter Integration, iCloud and many software such as the iBooks, Safari, iTunes, iPhoto, FaceTime and iMovie.

All units can also be configured with regards to their processor (up to 2.8GHz dual core Intel Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz with 4MB shared L3 cache) and memory (up to 16GB RAM upgrade and up to 1TB of flash storage)

Each product comes with limited warranty and service, buyers are encouraged to purchase an AppleCare protection Plan which effectively extends service and support to three years from date of purchase.

Design-wise, Apple has once again managed to set the bar high with the MacBook Pro. The trademark clean yet stylish look has always made a positive impact on consumers and continues to be one of the reasons why these portable computers are much coveted. Performance wise, the MacBook Pro is impressive and allows users to enjoy a whole new level of computing experience.

The biggest turn off would obviously be the prices. They are certainly a whole lot more expensive especially for the local market. As mentioned earlier, adjusting to Apple’s OS might take time especially if you have been a Windows user all your life. Like all Apple products, batteries are built-in and can only be replaced by an authorized service center agent.
