Vests may not be a necessary piece of clothing for most ladies, but they sure are a fashionable addition to any plain outfit. Vests give your outfit more layers, and therefore more texture. When in doubt, keep it neutral.
The great thing about vests is that so many of them come in neutral hues like this khaki one. When you're wearing an outfit that already has a bit of color in the mix, the fashion-forward option when it comes to vests is to pick one that's just neutral enough to blend into the colors that are already in your clothes.
Try to keep your vest within the same color family as the clothes you often wear, however. If you wear a lot of blacks and blues, pick a navy or grey vest to keep it in the cool-toned category. If you like summery colors or browns, reds, and oranges, a great vest color is beige, cream, or khaki. Likewise, if you want a vest that adds the color to a neutral outfit, go with jewel tones like deep reds and emeralds.
Structured vests accentuate your shape
Vests don't always have to hang loose and open. There are vests that have a stiffer material to give your outfit more of a shape. A cinched waist can help accentuate an hourglass figure. A loose, flowy fit can add more volume to a skinny frame. Severe cuts and angular hemlines can add height if you're on the shorter side. And likewise, more curved hemlines and cuts can help an angular body look a little more feminine.
Keep patterns in mind.
Patterned vests add a bit of texture to any look. So if you find that your outfit is too monochromatic, opt for a printed vest to add a focal point to your outfit. Likewise, if you're already wearing something with prints, avoid clashing by choosing a plain vest instead.
Textures are fun!
Add more texture to your look by picking out interesting fabrics for your vest. Since vests don't come into direct contact with the skin, you can go all-out with fabrics that might be too stiff or itchy when you wear them on their own. So fabrics like velvet, suede, and even faux fur instantly add an interesting texture to your look.
Don't doubt the denim.
Denim vests have been around for decades, and they're not going anywhere. Denim looks great with a host of different fabrics that you can comfortably wear them with almost anything. If you take a look at current trends, it's now fashionistas love to wear denim with soft, flowy, and feminine fabrics. Likewise, denim can be worn with a formal-looking pencil-cut dress to make it look just a touch more casual.
Team up with tassels.
Tassels are now becoming a staple in the fashion world, and we can see why! Tassels give lots of texture to an outfit, and they're easy to match too. To wear a tasseled vest the way the fashion houses do, pair them with fabrics that are on the plain side. Think cotton, polyester, and wool. This allows the tassels to really be the center of attention.
