Asics: Athletes' Companion

Overview

For every competition in sports, it may be basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, soccer, you name it, Asics is always there. The Japanese multinational corporation is one of the many companies that release and manufacture high-quality sportswear and sports equipment covering various types of sporting activity. One of their main products are shoes for running as they are usually used in most sports event. They are much known for their footwear simply because of its topnotch performance. With that, many of their products are typically expensive. Well, the products, especially shoes, produced by Asics are methodically and specifically inspected by shoe specialists to ensure their quality and worthiness. Surely, many athletes around the world own a pair of Asics shoes, which always serve them in every victory or loss. In addition, Asics also offers clothing lines that complement with the shoes.

History

The history of the legendary sportswear maker—ASICS Ltd.—can be traced on September 1, 1949; its original company name was Onitsuka Co., Ltd, which was founded by Kihachiro Onitsuka. He started with producing footwear for basketball in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Well, it was during that time when Basketball was at its pinnacle. Later, many varieties of sports games were becoming popular especially during 1950 to 1970, which lead to more production. Most interestingly, the founder, Onitsuka, became well-known when he released Mexico 66, which sport an excellent design language; it featured an eccentric and unique crossed strips pattern.

Sometime in 1977, the company that Kihachiro started that became Onitsuka Tiger amalgamated with JELENK and GTO, which resulted in the formation of the now known ASICS Company. History may have changed the name of the Onitsuka Co., LTd (Onitsuka Tiger), but the brand-new conglomerate has continuously manufactured vintage Asics shoes with the legendary Onitsuka Tiger marker for loyal patrons. In July 2010, Asics assimilated Haglöfs, another famous outdoor equipment manufacturer that focuses on footwear, hardware, and clothing. It was bought for 128.7 million USD. It is now one of the biggest outdoor brands in the world.

It is not only a shoe company. ASICS is an acronym inspired from the famous Latin expression "anima sana in corpore sano", which directly means "sound body, sound mind" or "Healthy soul in a healthy body". It was actually as derivative from Juvenal's adage "mens sana in corpore sano", which also meant the same thing. Certainly, this has become the leading philosophy of the company; it is the very core value that their all their sportswear emulate. For many decades, Asics has been the Athletes' confidante.

ASICS GEL-LYTE III

Remembering the success of the ASICS running shoes—the GEL-LYTE™ III OG, which was initially designed and styled by Shigeyuki Mitsui-- the company has released yet another remarkable running shoes for women with the name GEL-LYTE III; it is a time traveler from 90's as it features a familiar retro Asics design with the same running capability. It is also derived from the GEL-LD RACER™. Interestingly, the shoes come with a mesh fabric on its underlays, which really gives a nostalgic feeling to it.
