Maxus is a car brand under SAIC Motor. Headquartered in Shanghai, SAIC Motor is the largest auto company listed on China's A-share trading market. With a focus on manufacturing, research and design of both commercial and passenger vehicles, SAIC Motor also owns brands such as MG Motors and Roewe. It was the first automobile company to have clocked annual sales in 2018 that crossed 7 million. It was also listed on the Fortune Global 500 list in 2019 being ranked 39th and 7th amongst other automobile brands.
SAIC Motors was founded on November 24, 1997. Although an assembling factory during the World War period, it only recently came to prominence, because of a rise in demand for passenger vehicles. Despite it being a small company in the 1970s, an agreement in 1984 with Volkswagen paved the establishment of the Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co Ltd in March 1985. Equipped with foreign technology and guidance of Shanghai government authorities, allowed SAIC Motors to increase its production manyfold within 10 years.
A second venture, with General Motors in 1997, led to doubling in vehicle production between 2000 and 2004. In 2004, it acquired a 48.9% stake in South Korean automobile company SsangYong Motor. The Shanghai Automotive Group was thus created to accommodate subsidiary companies in the passenger car business.
In 2010, the stake in ailing Ssang Yong Motor soured. The additional 45$ Million provided by SAIC did not help as Ssang Motor went to receivership. A reduced stake yet exposure to Mercedez technology which Ssang controlled at the time, were the takeaways of this period.
Maxus was earlier part of Leyland Steam Van in 1896. In 1907 with the start of Leyland Motor, the portfolio was expanded. In 2004, a prototype Maxus was launched as the LD100 van. After the acquisition by the SAIC, in February 2011, the Maxus V80 was launched.
