Land Rover traces its roots to The Rover Company Limited's Rover Series, which was launched in 1948. The Rover Company was a British automobile manufacturer founded by John Kemp Starley and William Sutton in 1878. The first made bicycles before venturing into building motorcycles and cars.
The Rover Company's first production car was the two-seater Rover 8, with the first model rolling out of their factory from 1904 to 1912. The car manufacturer introduced in 1948 the Land Rover Series, which included all-purpose off-road automobiles with a wheelbase measuring 80 inches. Ten years later, it launched the bigger Land Rover Series II, which featured wheelbase options of 88 inches and 109 inches.
In 1967, the company was acquired by Leyland Motor Corporation, which merged with British Motor Holdings the following year to form British Leyland Motor Corporation. Following nationalization by the British government, the latter eventually became the Rover Group in 1986 to represent the Austin, Rover, Mini, Land Rover, Freight Rover, and Leyland businesses.
In 1970, the ground-breaking Range Rover debuted in the market, offering excellent off-road capabilities in a car-like package. Fourteen years later, the nameplate became the first Land Rover vehicle to have an air suspension feature.
German car maker BMW bought the remaining car business of The Rover Group in 1994 and sold the Land Rover division to American automobile manufacturer Ford in 2000. Eight years later, the Ford passed on the ownership of the Land Rover, along with the Jaguar brand, to Indian automobile maker Tata Motors, which merged the two marques to form Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.
In the Philippines, Land Rover vehicles are exclusively imported and distributed by Coventry Motors Corp (CMC). The company received the appointment in 2017.
Land Rover is currently carried locally by one dealership – All British Cars. The latter has built a 10,000 sqm facility in Greenhills, San Juan. The property contains a showroom for up to nine Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles, an after-sales service area that offer six work bays, a customer lounge, and sales offices.
