GAC Motor was founded on 21st June 2008 with headquarters in Guangzhou. It manufactures world-class vehicles, car accessories, auto parts and engines and operates over 15 countries. GAC primarily focuses on consumer vehicles but also has commercial buses and buses under its different brands. GAC is also renowned for its joint venture with Honda and other foreign brands partnerships for producing and selling these brands in China.
GAC has consistently ranked the highest from 2013 to 2018 among Chinese brands in the J.D Power APC Initial Quality Study. GAC Motor's strong affiliation to the "innovative, coordinated, eco-friendly and sharing" and "Simple, Slim, Compact" principles has earned it international fame from Forbes, NYT and Yahoo.
Guangzhou Automobile Group Company Limited was founded on 6th June 1997. In 2005, the state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group became the parent company. By 2009, the GAC group became the 6th largest automobile producer in China. In 2009, a 28% stake was bought in sports utility brand, Changfeng Automobile. In 2011, Changfeng was acquired by the group.
In 2010, the company was listed on the Hong Kong Stock exchange.
In April 2010, GAC Motor Logo was unveiled during the Beijing Auto Show. With the production plant having completed in September 2010, Trumpchi brand was launched in December and its sedans were used for concierge services during the Asian Games.
In 2012, GAC became listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
In March during the same year, the GAC GS5 model was launched. In August 2014, the GAC GA3S Vision was launched. In the same year, the GAC GS5 Super and the GAC GA6 were also launched. The GAC GS5 Super came into being after a facelift and a modified DCT.
In April 2015 and 2016 respectively, models the GAC GS4 and the GAC GA8 were introduced. The GAC GS4 was a crossover of the GAC GS3 and the GAC GS5 models. 2016 also saw the Xinjiang production facility launched in Urumqi.
In October 2016, the GAC GS8 Trumpchi was displayed in the Beijing and Detroit Auto Show. April 2017 saw the inception of the Industrial Park dedicated to New energy and intelligent technologies integration with vehicles.
July 2018 marked the tenth anniversary of the Group with the launch of a new campaign called The Road to Greatness.
GAC Motors Philippines was launched on 7th November 2018. Legado Motors, Inc is the authorized distributor of the GAC Motors in the Philippines. In a ceremony at Metro Manila, 5 models were unveiled namely, the GAC GA4, the GAC GA8, the GAC GS4, the GAC GS8 and the GAC GM8.
Legado Motors has 7 dealerships situated in Imus City, Pasig, Pampanga, Tarlac, Cebu, Las Pinas and Alabang. The 8th dealership in Quezon province is on the cards. A service centre in San Fernando is in partnership with Yokohama.
There is no domestic assembly line and the production of the cars takes place in China. A Free Trade Agreement between ASEAN and China has led to reduced tariffs and cheaper imported cars.
GAC Motors as of today has 6 models including the GAC GS3 comprising 3 SUVs, 1 van and 2 Sedans. When we consider the price, the cheapest model, the GAC GA4 costs P778,000 and the costliest is the GAC GM8 priced at P2,880,000.
GAC Motor Product Line in the Philippines consists of 6 models, the GAC GA4 with 2 variants, the GAC GA8 with 2 variants, the GAC GM8 with 1 variant, the GAC GS3 with 2 variants, the GAC GS4 with 1 variant, and the GAC GS8 with 3 variants.
The GAC GA4 is a compact sedan and was the first launch in the Philippines. The variants are manual or automatic transmission systems. With a 5 seater capacity, the GAC GS4 has an elegant yet sporty design aesthetics. The DRL and headlights, polished leather interiors, automated air conditioning system, power steering and smooth finish of the dashboard are hard to miss. Both the 1.3L Turbo with 6 gear automatic transmission and the 1.5 L Manual Transmission with the 5-speed gearbox, are equipped with anti-locking braking, Electronic Brake Distribution and other common safety features. Performance-wise, the automatic transmission variant is better.
The GAC GA8 is a full-sized sedan that has an elegant design accentuated by LED diamond headlights. The four-seater car has two variants, GAC GA8 GE AT and GL AT. A 2L turbocharged engine delivers 300nm/1600rpm and 194 hp/5200rpm. The 6-speed AMT ensures smooth gear transitions. When stuck in traffic, one can experience abrupt jerks with the car. Luxury features like ten-inch touchscreen, 3 zone control for the auto climate to escape the heat and a superior air conditioning and purification system makes it a comfortable car.
The GAC GM8 is a 7 seater capacity executive van. Similar to yacht body lines, the GAC GM8 has back massagers, electric wide-leg rests and also comes powered with adjustable LED ambient lights, 10 inches LED display and a 3 zone automatic purification and air conditioning system.
The GAC GS3 marries the sportiness of the crossovers with the characteristic elegance of GAC cars. Having 2 variants, a 1.3L turbocharged DCVVT engine and a 1.5L DCVVT engine, the latter variant of the subcompact car provides better features against the basic features at lower prices for the 1.3L variant.
The GAC GS4 subcompact turbochargers deliver 150 hp and 235 Nm Torque helping in ease in navigating across traffic. A 6 gear transmission responds well to accelerator inputs and also has smooth upshifts yet there can be some sort of turbo lag. Few issues like in the steering like jarring and slight wobble are there. Features like speed sensor door locks, parking sensors and reverse camera make the car very popular at an affordable range.
The GAC GS8 is the mid-sized sports utility vehicle with a 2L gasoline engine and 6 gear speed transmission. The GAC GS8 is capable of delivering 199hp and 320 Nm Torque. Different modes for driving which make for a smooth ride quality despite its size.
The Industry standard warranty for new cars in the Philippines is 3 years or 100,000 km whichever is first. However, GAC Motor vehicles are equipped with an extendable warranty from one-five years thereby increasing consumer confidence in purchasing their cars.
In 2019, the GAC group reported better sales as compared to last year. With 2,062,160 new vehicles sold and output of 2,023,814 vehicles, it roughly had 2.08 million vehicles delivered. GAC Motors saw a dip in sales by 28.14% with 384,578 units.
In the Philippines, 416,637 units sales of vehicles were reported per industry reports. GAC reported only 234 units sales for 2019.
The GAC GM8 and the GAC GS8 were awarded the best minivan and best Mid-sized SUVs by C! Magazine in 2019. With increasing sales and a growing network of dealers, GAC Motors is also seen at racing circuits, with the GAC GA4 Sedan, which has also won laurels at the Kalayaan Cup.
