About Cadillac Cars

Cadillac – Pure American Luxury & Performance

Cadillac or Cadillac Motor Car division, as it was known earlier, is a leading automobile marketing & distribution company which specializes in producing luxury vehicles with a huge customer base all over the world. It is essentially a marketing division of General Motors Company (the largest automobile manufacturing company in the world) with a huge primary market in countries like United States of America, China and Canada along with a total of 34 other secondary market divisions in many other countries. Cadillac was founded on 22nd August 1902 and has its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, United States. It has won many prestigious awards including the "Dewar Trophy" provided by the Royal Automobile Club of England in 1908 & again in 1912, once for successful interchangeability of components and later for incorporation of lighting & an electric start mechanism in produced automobiles.

Historical Foundation

Cadillac was founded by Henry M Leland, William Murphy and 1902 Lemuel Bowen. It initially started off as a division of its parent organization – Henry Ford Company – which was dissolved after Henry Ford's death in 1902. Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company master engineer Henry M Leland, with investment and other financial support from William Murphy & Lemuel Brown, started the Cadillac Automobile Company on 22nd August 1902 from Ford's remnants that were otherwise intended to be dissolved after liquidation of company assets. It is however interesting to note that the company was named after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe sieur de Cadillac – the founder of Detroit.

Acquisition by General Motors

Cadillac was incorporated into General Motors after it was purchased by the company in 1909 and was mainly concerned with manufacturing large body type luxury cars, commercial, institutional vehicles such as limousines, hearses, ambulances, funeral flower cars etc., many of which were custom made by manufacturer. Notable improvements after the acquisition by General Motors include introduction of flat head 90 degrees V-8 cylinder engine in 1915 that was capable of producing 70HP of power and 180lbft of torque that allowed it to attain a max speed of 65mph. Other great achievements include the crank shaft dual plane V-8 cylinder engines in 1918, overhead valve 45 degree V-16 cylinder engine capable of producing 165HP power (the quietest & most powerful engine in the whole of United States). This really set the standard for other performance cars of other luxury brands in the same category.

Development under General Motors

General Motors started production of Cadillac in Canada from 1929. These cars had a very strong built and were provided with a very powerful engine, thus making them a clear favorite among customers from the social upper class. Harley Earl was hired by General Motors as a Consultant Automobile Stylist for Cadillac in 1926 and was later appointed its Head of Art & Color Division. His trademark design that left a mark on history was LaSalle, a small body compact marque car named after French Explorer and Detroit founder Rene Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle. It also saw improvement in technology and up gradation of body features including incorporation of shatter proof glass in 1926. The next generation of Cadillac promises to incorporate bold design patterns, hi tech features and unparalleled design into its cars with latest concept models being Cadillac XLR & CTS-V.

Product Lineup

Cadillac has an impressive product lineup consisting exclusive & premium luxury car models including concept vehicles, sedans, coupe, crossovers, sports utility vehicles, station wagon, etc. The car models in current production include CTS, DTS, SRX, CTS-V, Escalade, ATS, XTS, Ciel, Cien, etc. It also has an electric hybrid coupe model in its product lineup – ELR.

Motorsports Trends

Cadillac achieved moderate success in the racing circuit and also served as an engine supplier to many prestigious race teams such as Allard. Important achievements include 1950 National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing Grand National Series, Le Mans Series America from 2000 – 2002, SCCA World Challenge in World Touring Class category, etc. It's most successful motorsport vehicle has been the Cadillac CTS-V which has been provided with a LSA OHV 6.2L, super charged V-8 cylinder engine that is capable of producing 556HP of power & 551lbft torque.

Cadillac Philippines & Sales

As of now, there is no official Cadillac dealer operating in Philippines. Cars have to be imported which is usually very expensive. However, there were rumors surrounding Cadillac that General Motors had initially intended to launch the brand in Philippines, but dwindling sale forced them to prompt out. According to a survey conducted in 2012, Cadillac sold over 149,782 units in the United States which amount to a total of 6.4% increase in sales. It is expected that sales will be higher for the first half of 2014, and an overall annual increase of 27% is further speculated after 2014. Escalade has been its best selling model since inception with a present annual increase in sales of 30.3%.
