8 Beautiful Bronzers for that Perfect Summer Glow

Okay, let's get one thing straight: not all bronzers are created equal.

With that said, what are differences between bronzers, and which one should you be using? To answer this, we need to define what a bronzer really is. Simply put, a bronzer is a cream or powder product that's applied to the face to bring a little color to the face. It's a pale girl's dream come true.

So what is it that seems to be confusing people when it comes to bronzers? Well, there are actually three types of bronzers out there: bronzers to give the face a tanned glow, bronzers for contouring (also called matte bronzers or contour powders/creams), and bronzers that act as blush or blush toppers.

Below, we'll give an explanation for each.

Matte Bronzers

Matte bronzers have zero shimmer. Their texture should be fine and blendable to avoid looking streaky on the face. They can come in both powder and cream formulas.

A warm-toned matte bronzer can be applied to the perimeter of the face to give the face a sun-kissed glow. It also takes away the paleness if your foundation is too light or if you just want to look like you had a great time at the beach. Keep in mind that bronzers made for achieving that sun-kissed glow should be warm-toned so as to avoid looking sallow.

A cool-toned and slightly greyish powder is perfect for contouring. Its color mimics the color of a shadow on your face. It's applied to the hollows of the cheeks to really make your cheekbones pop. It can also be applied to the jaw to create a more pronounced jawline and to the sides of the nose to create the illusion of a more aquiline nose.

Bronzers for contouring are supposed to be cool-toned because it's meant to look like a shadow. Using a warm-toned, reddish, or slightly orange bronzer has a tendency to make the face seem too orange, and that's not a good look on anyone.

Shimmery Bronzers

Shimmery bronzers are a summer staple. These bronzers have a fine shimmer within the cream or powder to catch the light. It's not made for contouring since the shimmer in these products attract light instead of creating the illusion of a shadow.

Shimmery bronzers are perfect for giving the illusion of a tan. It's applied to the perimeter of the face to give a sun-kissed glow, much like warm-toned matte bronzers. The only difference is that shimmery bronzers can also act as a highlight. It can be subtle or glamorous, depending on how much shimmer is in the product you're using.

Shimmery bronzers can also be used as a highlight if you have a deeper skin tone. Since there are a ton of shades out there, you can pick out that's just light enough to look like a highlight. You can also apply shimmery bronzers to your shoulders, décolletage, and collarbones to look like you still have a tan from the beach.

Blush Toppers

Bronzers made to be blush toppers are a little less common. Many of us just prefer to keep out blush and bronzers separate. However, there are also some who like sun-kissed look to their blush without layering products.

These blush topper bronzers usually have a bit of shimmer. They also have a slightly more blush-toned color like pink, peach, or mauve, but with a hint of warm brown as well. These blush topper bronzers usually come in a powder form where you're made to swirl your brush in the pan to create a mixture of colors. Now that you know more about bronzers, pick out the one that you think you'll enjoy using the most! Whether it's a matte warm bronzer, a cool-toned contour bronzer, a shimmery bronzer, or a blush topper, our shop has it all!
