Scalp Acne 101: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Having scalp acne is as annoying as having a zit on your face!

When you have problems regarding facial zits, you might be suffering from frequent and painful breakouts and have already tried several acne-busting products. We know how hard it is to have recurring pimples on your face but if you have scalp acne to add, you're in for a dilemma. According to experts, scalp acne, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles that appears like pimples around and beneath the hairline, mostly plagues people who are prone to facial acne. In this article, we will be discussing the causes, treatment, and prevention of scalp acne.

Causes

For your information, the skin on the scalp and the skin of the face are actually quite similar, with the scalp skin serving as an extension of the facial skin. This means that the reason why you have zits on your face might also be the reason why you have bumps on the scalp. It can be caused either by hormones, genetics, or clogged pores, or even the combination thereof. If your problem is caused by the first two scalp acne culprits, you should seek professional help. However, if the breakouts are stemming from clogged pores, you just have to continue reading below and follow the right treatment program for your scalp acne.

Treatment

Fortunately, treating scalp acne isn't as complicated as you may have expected it to be. Most dermatologists will only recommend a medicated shampoo that can wash away dirt, unclog the pores, and prevent acne from returning. There are shampoos for scalp acne that you can readily purchase over-the-counter. You should make sure that the shampoo contains at least some of these ingredients: tea tree oil, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, ketoconazole, ciclopirox, and benzoyl peroxide. Their functions range from eliminating bacteria to removing excess sebum from the scalp. Here are some recommended shampoos for scalp acne that will do the trick.

Prevention

If your scalp acne is caused by clogged pores, you should now start having good scalp hygiene. This means that you have to wash your hair whenever it feels oily or after every workout. When wearing headgear, choose one that is not so tight-fitting to allow the scalp to breathe. Also, don't use too many hair products such as hairsprays and gels.

However, if breakouts still appear even after a few weeks of self-treatment, you should book an appointment with your dermatologist and get a prescription. You should be properly informed to be able to solve your problem with scalp zits and have healthy hair!
