Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition's Transparent Back Doesn't Show Real Internals

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition's transparent back design may be glorious to look at, but that didn't stop critics to question the authenticity of the visible internals. Time can only tell whether these rumors are legitimate or not.

Chinese smartphone mega player Xiaomi Inc. may have just revealed its newest flagships last month with a glowing future for the company, but that doesn't stop some of its keen rivals to take a bite out of the big launch. Some criticisms may not push the firm to further fame and reputation. The one that's been put to the spotlight recently is the flagship's premium edition, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition's transparent back offering.

According to an industry insider who cited sources from China, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition's transparent back design doesn't really genuinely show its real internals. The insider added that the parts that are visible right on the device's rear side are simply "dummy components" which are installed on top of its actual motherboard. As such, removing these wouldn't affect the smartphone's functionality.

Along with this insider, some skeptical individuals have also had their say. They thought that the Xiaomi Mi 8's Explorer Edition's visible components, particularly the chipset, and other components are either too far apart or situated high above the motherboard.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has issued a statement, clarifying the transparent back design in question. The company said that the visible internals are not a sticker and that the device is genuinely transparent. Furthermore, it revealed that the parts which are located on the upper half are actual parts of the mainboard.

The limited Explorer Edition of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is yet to be retailed as of this writing. As it goes, one can't physically attest whether Xiaomi's statements are indeed legitimate. On the other hand, the device is expected to be torn down once it gets released to satisfy the curiosity of these tech and aesthetic mavens.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition was made official during Xiaomi's official launch on May 31, 2018. Along this limited variant, flagships Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE were also revealed.
