After a successful debut in Thailand back in July, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) confirmed that the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross will be available in the Philippine market. And now, eager fans of the all-new Toyota crossover won't have to wait much longer: the Corolla-based crossover has finally arrived in the country. As if to celebrate TMP's 32nd anniversary this month, the company has just launched the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla Cross. Enthusiasts can now drive it for an SRP of PHP 1,285,000 for the G variant and PHP 1,650,000 for the 1.8V hybrid trim.
Slotting in between the ever-popular SUVs Toyota Rush and Toyota RAV4, the Toyota Corolla Cross is seen to compete, along with its siblings, for a share of the local automotive market. And it isn't going to be a difficult feat because aside from the dashing good looks, the latest crossover is also feature-packed. Moreover, this is Toyota's first-ever crossover to have a hybrid powertrain in the local market.
Although the crossover bears the iconic Corolla badge, it definitely is not a Toyota Corolla Altis sedan with bigger dimensions and taller height. It of course shares the same Toyota New Global Architecture for the C-segment (TNGA-C) platform with the Altis, but the new crossover uses a simpler rear suspension torsion beam layout instead of the sedan's independent multi-link setup. This rear suspension structure is reportedly more tuned for smoother handling and better ride quality. And it allowed for a roomier cabin inside the crossover.
In the looks department, the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross bears the brand's latest styling, with its proud-looking face donning a huge front grille with a stylish pair of headlights on the upper edges. The non-hybrid variant has halogen-projector headlights and bulb-type daytime running lights (DRLs), while the range-topping hybrid trim has LED headlights and DRLs. Black cladding and slim taillights are also apparent in the exterior. The crossover also comes with electronic-folding side view mirrors and rain-sensing windshield wipers, and depending on the variant, boasts a set of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside the cabin is where one will find similarities with the Corolla Altis, from the dashboard layout, door panels, all the way to the steering wheel. A 6.8-inch or 8-inch touchscreen display, depending on the variant, takes care of infotainment needs, with the range-topper that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. An 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, speed-sensing door locks, automatic climate control, and smart voice command are also among the new crossover's nifty features.
The non-hybrid 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross sports a 138hp-output- and 172Nm-torque-producing 1.8L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT. The hybrid powertrain is also 1.8L, delivering a total system output of 120hp and torque of 142Nm. The transmission system is an eCVT that features three driving modes: EV, Eco and Power.
The 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross, like most of Toyota's vehicles, comes with heaps of safety features including seven SRS airbags, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor seatbelts and reverse camera as standard across all variants. The top-of-the-line hybrid version comes with extras such as the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which includes the Pre-Collision System, Automatic High Beam, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert, and parking sensors for both front and rear.
Metal Stream Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Red Mica Metallic are the color options offered, along with Platinum White Pearl Mica available for an additional PHP 15,000.
