Toyota's new 2019 Corolla Hatchback has just made its impressive debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show, and for Toyota this sporty compact will be a huge improvement in style, quality and performance, a model that is sure to make any Corolla fan happy. The Corolla is Toyota's best-selling model and this new model marks the 12th generation of the line, and it doesn't disappoint.
The first thing you'll notice about the new Corolla is its aggressive, sporty design that looks unlike any previous version. The body is 1.5 inches longer and 1.2 inches wider than its predecessors, and that extra length has gone into lengthening its wheelbase, making for more room inside for passengers. The most attention-grabbing aspect of the design is the massive grille at the front, flanked by sleek and thin LED headlamps that are mirrored by wraparound taillights at the rear.
The interior has upscale styling that should please most drivers with stitched leather trim on the dash and shift knob, and modern amenities like an 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto support, Amazon Alexa and space for a 5.5-inch smartphone that can charge up with a built-in Qi wireless charger. The cabin is spacious with a pleasingly open design that doesn't feel claustrophobic, and Toyota did a really good job for passengers from a comfort and safety perspective, with seven airbags lining the area.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is driven by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine mated to a 6-speed transmission and sports-tuned suspension. Specifications haven't been finalized, but we can expect a marked improvement over its predecessor's 1.8-liter engine that pushed 132 horsepower.
On the whole, the new 2019 Corolla Hatchback is a worthy successor to the Corolla iM, and while this model is a representative of what's coming out in America, we can expect something similar when it finally hits the local market.
