About Sony Xperia 10 II

Sony Xperia 10 II: The Sleek Widescreen Smartphone

Sony is slowly adapting to the quick progress of mobile evolution. For the first time, it released a mid-range device with an FHD+ OLED display. Last February 2020, the world saw the Xperia 10 II, an attractive dual-glass smartphone with the brand's signature form factor. At first glance, you would think that it is from the flagship segment. The 6-inch cinematic widescreen looks stunning, especially when watching or gaming in landscape mode. Its tall screen in portrait mode allows a more spacious view using the Multi-window feature. The phone runs on stock Android 10, so the neat-looking user interface complements the simplistic exterior very well. It is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 665 chipset (a 2019 edition) coupled with a GPU of Adreno 610. It offers 4GB of RAM and ROM options of 64GB or 128GB. If that is not enough for you, storage is still expandable via a microSDXC slot. Sony is the only smartphone brand able to build a unique SIM tray that does not need a pin or tool. It's a small thing, but it is a commendable triumph. Another likeable part is the retention of a 3.5mm headphone jack, which most rivals have decided to eliminate in their 2020 devices. Some users are mere fans of wired listening without looking for the dongle alternative. The Xperia 10 II is packed with a 3600mAh battery and a rear triple-camera setup. The vertical camera module at the back houses a 12MP wide lens, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto shooter. The front-facing camera has an 8MP resolution that delivers decent selfies despite a lack of special features. Sony took time in crafting this device by obtaining two certifications, IP65, and IP68 rating, to ensure that it's safe from accidental water splashes and other unwanted elements.

Inside the white box with Xperia 10 II logo, there lies the smartphone, a pair of 3.5mm earphones, a USB-C to USB-A cable, and an 18W power brick. The phone size is 157 x 69 x 8.2mm and weighs 151 grams. It is ideal for users who love to carry light things inside their bags or pockets. The color options are Black, White, Mint Green, and Berry Blue.

Pros

  • Compact and light design
  • Cinematic panel suitable for media consumption
  • OLED display with scratch-resistance
  • Loudspeaker with Hi-Res audio
  • IP65 dust/oil-resistant and IP68 water/dirt-resistant
  • Creative UI customization
  • Updated USB Type-C 2.0 port
  • Expandable storage

Cons

  • Slightly dated Snapdragon chipset
  • It is not a good phone for gaming
  • Mobile photography is quite a struggle

Design of the Sony Xperia 10 II

Embracing the notch-less trend does not always mean expanding the phone's screen both ways (horizontally and vertically). Other brands go for larger displays every year, but Sony sticks to a slim, practical form factor with this model by providing an aspect ratio of 21:9. The Xperia 10 II is made with a Gorilla Glass front, Gorilla Glass back, and plastic frame. It has almost no bezels on the side and perfectly balanced top and bottom bezels. It is a very compact and light device, perfect for one-hand operation. Holding it is so comfortable, and apps are easier to reach with your thumb. The glass on both sides feels premium, while the mid-frame has a matte finish. This model's build quality is indeed praiseworthy. There is a super-thin camera bump on the back that does not wobble when placed on top of flat surfaces. You will find a microphone, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a tiny hole that serves as an LED notification indicator on top of the phone. There is an easy-to-flap SIM card tray on the left side. Sony made it a special one because you don't need to use a sim ejector tool at all, unlike most Android phones. You will see the volume rockers and a flat-edged power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader for unlocking on the right side. The USB-C port is situated at the bottom, along with a microphone.

Display of the Sony Xperia 10 II

It is not perfect, but arguably one of the best widescreens in the market. It boasts a 6-inch cinema-wide OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels and an elongated aspect ratio of 21:9. It has Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection on top for scratch and damage resistance. The top bezel houses the front-facing camera and the earpiece, while the speakers are situated on the bottom chin. The Xperia 10 II promises to give you immersive entertainment day in and day out. The display has 457 pixels per inch density and a screen-to-body ratio of 77.6%. It has an acceptable brightness and contrast, although texts are not readable enough if you are under direct sunlight. Also, if you do long hours of viewing, perhaps from watching or gaming, there is a tendency for the display's colors to appear oversaturated. Thanks to its OS, you can adjust the phone's white balance in the settings and choose between warm, medium, cool, or custom. To complete the cinematic experience, you may use the earphones in the package, connect it to the 3.5mm audio jack with Sony L-DAC support, or enjoy the speakers with Hi-Res audio.

The software of Sony Xperia 10 II

This smartphone runs on Android 10 with a mild touch of Xperia UI. It has an Always-On display for quick time checks and Light and Dark mode options on the settings. Stock Android is a very likeable experience for most people. If you are not fond of pre-installed apps or bloatware, this phone is just what you need. The only things you will find when you start setting it up are the Sony music app, Facebook, and Netflix. These apps are practical to use and still removable if you do not really need them. Sony has developed a unique UI skin that offers two navigation choices: through gesture or the conventional three-button with a 'Back' key. Most system navigation controls are customizable. There is an amazing One-handed mode that shrinks the screen, so icons are easier to reach. The size of the reduced screen in this mode is customizable too. On the farthest right side of the screen, you can activate the Side sense tech with a quick double-tap. It houses several shortcuts so you can switch apps or tasks easily. For some, the Side sense is easier to access or launch than the usual Android swipe-up or down menu. The Xperia 10 II lets you "see more, scroll less" through the Multi-window feature. The display's narrow but tall space on the halved screens look so pleasing. It helps you multitask without switching screens, plus it remembers your frequently joint apps and offers it every time.

Performance of the Sony Xperia 10 II

The hardware on this device is Qualcomm SDM665 Snapdragon 665 chipset based on 11nm architecture. It has four Kryo 260 Gold cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Kryo 260 Silver cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It is coupled with Adreno 610 for its GPU needs, 4GB RAM, and memory configurations of 64GB or 128GB ROM. The internal storage is still expandable via a dedicated microSDXC card slot. Although the octa-core CPU is a bit dated for this unit, it can deliver a mid-range performance as expected. Mobile gaming on the Xperia 10 II is fun because of the OLED display and loudspeaker placement. The widescreen gives you a full view of the incoming action ahead, which increases your chances of winning. However, resource-intensive games do not sit well with this phone. If you want it to cope accordingly, you need to choose low to medium frame settings. This smartphone achieved a score of 196,545 points on the AnTuTu Benchmark. It scored 1413 (Single-core) and 5679 (Multi-core) on the GeekBench rating, then 5.6fps for GFXBench.

The Camera of the Sony Xperia 10 II

Sony has fitted a triple rear camera setup on this model, which is impressive given its size and weight. The primary camera is a 12MP wide lens with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF technology. The second camera has an 8MP telephoto lens with a large f/2.4 aperture, PDAF, and 2x optical zoom. The third camera is an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and offers a 120-degree field of view. This setup has an LED flash, high dynamic range, and panorama. It allows you to be more creative with your shots through a Video image optimization feature. Also, the Night mode works with all three lenses. Turning it on in low-light conditions help boost brightness and color saturation. You can shoot videos in 4K at 30fps and 1080p at 30fps. Using the cameras with natural lighting produces great photos with mouth-watering colors. Consequently, selfies taken on the 8MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture render natural-looking skin tones. It has an HDR mode, but it is not automatic. It can record videos in 1080p at 30 frames per second. Portrait mode on the selfie snapper sometimes does not have good edge detection. Video shooting has good stabilization, although it takes time to take effect.

A noticeable drawback of the Xperia 10 II is the delayed response time of the shutter button. It takes a while to process the shots, and that is not a minor issue in mobile photography. The Night mode delivers the right balance of highlights and dark areas, but it really takes time to load the images. You can expect a few visible noises as well. Overall, the dynamic range is not top-notch, but images are clear and detailed if captured in broad daylight.

The Battery of the Sony Xperia 10 II

It has a non-removable Li-Po 3600mAh battery, which is sufficient for a whole day of medium to heavy usage. The battery's daily capacity is okay, as it achieved an endurance rating of 92 hours. The phone comes with an 18-watt fast charger, supports Quick charge 3.0, and USB Power Delivery. Unfortunately, even though this handset sports a glass back, wireless charging is not supported. Sony's advertisement claims that it can last a busy day without the need to recharge. It offers Xperia Adaptive charging, which allows users to optimize battery life and promote long-term battery care.

Network, Connectivity, and Sensors of the Sony Xperia 10 II

The Xperia 10 II can support one or two Nano-SIM cards in a hybrid dual SIM tray. It is designed to give you two options: utilize two different Nano SIM cards or insert one Nano-SIM and a microSDXC card for more storage. It supports GSM, HSPA, and LTE network technologies operating in 2G, 3G, and 4G signals. The network bands for 2G are GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900; for 3G are HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700(AWS) / 2100; and for 4G are LTE B1/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B20/B28/B38/39/40/41. The network speed is HSPA 42.2/5.76Mbps and LTE-A Cat11 600/75Mbps. Device connectivity includes WLAN, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS (with A-GPS, GLONASS), Hotspot/Tethering, and NFC. It does not have an infrared port and FM radio. For wired connections, it is compatible with USB Type-C 2.0 and USB On-The-Go. Moreover, this model's sensors are an accelerometer, proximity, compass, and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. It is equipped with two microphones to allow clear recording and filter out background noise. The loudspeaker located at the display's chin delivers respectable audio quality with an average loudness score. Equally, the 3.5mm audio jack on the top has Sony L-DAC support and gives nice, detailed sound quality.

Conclusion

Sony's Xperia 10 II is a great daily driver for entertainment and productivity tasks. The 6-inch widescreen offers more vertical viewing space for emails, reading documents and eBooks, or scrolling through different social media feeds. Using this delightful device, you can easily transition from work mode to relax mode. Its FHD+ OLED display promises an immersive viewing experience. The IP65 and IP68 rating also suggest that you can bring it anywhere so you can keep watching (or listening). You can bring it inside the bathroom or by the pool. If there are things that you wish this model had, it would be a better and speedier chipset. The cameras are also fine if they were dual but had higher resolution than the offered low-performing triple shooters. Having said that, this smartphone is clearly not competing with the latest camera phones and coolest game-centric phones. In terms of design and durability, Sony has definitely aced it.
