About Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, a Folding Device Dominator

The phrase "History repeats itself" is often used with a negative connotation to acknowledge the reoccurrence of a past event or tradition. With regard to the global smartphone market, this phrase is uttered quite often but it does not always carry negative meanings, on the contrary, it can refer to the successful integration of older technology with newer models of smartphones. In the case of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip, history has indeed successfully repeated itself, this piece of equipment is a truly unique device that harkens back to the late '90s with the utilization of the once widely popular "flip phone" design. A number of critics and reviewers are skeptical about the reception of this device, as its main selling point is its folding design; however, this wouldn't be the first time Samsung has found some success in a folding device, as evidenced by the decent reception of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. With this in mind, the designers at Samsung have once again pushed through with a folding phone, and with great performance and excellent overall quality, this phone may yet be another hit. Shipping with the phone in a charcoal black Samsung box is a special two-piece clear case made specifically to accommodate the folding phone as well as, a 15W power brick, a USB-C charging cable, a USB-A to USB-C adapter, and in typical Samsung fashion a pair of premium AKG earphones with USB-C wiring. The device does not come with a headphone jack, however with its quirky nature and the prevalence of wireless headphones many users will be less bothered by this design choice.

Pros:

  • It has up-to-date camera software
  • The device folds open and closed
  • The camera is decent
  • The processor is excellent
  • The phone can stay open at any point in its hinge rotation
  • The back mini-display allows users to take selfies with the rear camera
  • The phone is very small when folded

Cons:

  • It is rather expensive
  • It does not have a quad-HD display
  • It does not have an embedded headphone jack
  • The phone charges rather slowly
  • The battery is only decent
  • The folding screen has a noticeable crease

A technological throwback

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Samsung made the Galaxy Z Flip not just as a testing bed for future folding models, but also as an object of unmistakeable nostalgia. Users everywhere will feel a strong sense of sentiment upon seeing this phone, because like its namesake, the Galaxy Z Flip can hinge open and closed, literally reducing its profile and size by half in one smooth, fluid, motion, reminiscent of the marvelous devices of the late '90s and early 2000s. Unlike the phones that inspired its design, the Galaxy Z Flip is for all intents and purposes a modern phone, albeit an oddly unique one at that. The handset comes in three color variants: Mirror black, mirror purple, and mirror gold, all of which are topped with Samsung's signature glossy finish, not the best choice for keeping away pesky fingerprints but absolutely stunning in terms of aesthetics. For particularly fashion-oriented users, Samsung has partnered with renowned fashion designer Thom Browne to create a unique silver color variant with the designer's signature three-color stripe pattern.

Whether the phone is folded or unfolded it is truly pleasant to hold, the device feels solid in the hand and many reviewers could practically feel the high quality build of this piece of kit. Equipped with rubber stoppers on the lower left and right corners, the device can close with almost no gap between the lower and upper screen whilst still remaining perfectly safe from external pressure. Perhaps the phone's greatest feature, the Galaxy Z Flip can hinge open at any angle even 90 degrees, this allows the phone to effectively stand upright without affecting the design of the body in any way.

Out with plastic screens, in with glass displays

Designing a modern folding smartphone comes with numerous, unique technological hurdles and difficulties. Given the fact that most modern devices are designed with a rigid body that would soon as shatter and break before folding, Samsung had quite the task with the creation of the Galaxy Z Flip. One of the biggest problems with a folding touchscreen phone is without a doubt, the display; thankfully, Samsung handled this issue with the ingenuity and effectiveness expected of such a monster Smartphone brand. Gone is the plastic display that found its home in Samsung's previous folding device, in its place, is a stunning 6.7 inches, AMOLED, full HD display which delivers incredible colors and depth while reducing blue light radiation. Dubbed "Infinity flex" by its makers, the display is comprised of Ultrathin glass which has no trouble bending when the phone is folded; in addition, the phone has minimized bezels and no top-notch allowing for immersive media viewing. Truly revolutionary, the Galaxy Z Flip boasts the first-ever folding glass mounted on any Samsung smartphone and because of this capability the screen has a stunning aspect ratio of 21.1:9; while retaining the ability to fold down to the size of a very small wallet. To take their phone one step further, Samsung also mounted a mini-display beside the rear camera, this allows the user to do everything from viewing incoming calls, checking the time and date, using the rear camera for selfies and so much more. This piece of kit is every bit as functional as it is unique and it is sure to make daily tasks easier for all users.

Last year's best, tuned for present SoC standards

There's an old adage that goes: "it is better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it". In terms of smartphones, the same saying can be applied to processing power. Given its purpose as a smartphone for general uses, the Galaxy Z Flip doesn't necessarily need a ton of processing capability, but users can take comfort in knowing that when the going gets tough and the calculations get heavy, this smartphone is well up to the task. Housed in the device's folding body is Qualcomm's revered Snapdragon 855 plus processor which ranks 6th among the 30 best smartphone processors as of March 2020 according to TechCenturion.

Considering the level of quality of the competition, ranking 6th is no small matter, and this device puts up the numbers to prove that despite being an older processor the Snapdragon 855 plus still has more than enough power to meet the needs of any consumer. Testing with Geekbench yielded 3528 for Single-core and 10703 for Multi-core; meanwhile, for 3DMark the phone recorded 5670 and 3925 for OpenGL and Vulkan respectively. Lastly for AnTuTu, the device put up an overall score of 441775 besting over 80% of the competition. All of this data translates to smooth app transitions and almost seamless functionality, as an added bonus, it wouldn't be too far fetched to say that the Galaxy Z Flip could even support mobile games with heavy graphics. Even for users who often like to multitask, this handset shows no signs of lag whether there's one processor-intensive app open or five, the phone retains its smooth functions and shows no stuttering or frame drops.

Android 10, flip phone style

Taking into account the Galaxy Z Flips unique profile and design, Samsung was faced with another challenge: to tweak their already wonderful software to not only work with their flip phone but also accentuate and supplement its hinging action. This challenge is what inspired Samsung to create flex mode which allows apps to split their functions between the two screens created by the Galaxy Z Flip's half-folded stature. In layman's terms, by folding the phone partially the user can essentially split an app in half, with the camera app, for instance, folding the device causes the upper half to display the camera and the lower half to display camera controls, this ingenious innovation gives the user a tripod without all the hassle of lugging around a three-legged stand. It should be noted that not all apps support flex mode, but those that do are made a great deal more functional with an added cool factor. Samsung has also stated that flex mode works with google duo, a video chatting app, along with other useful third-party applications. In the future users may even see apps that have adapted to make use of the flex mode on this device, an interesting prospect when one considers the various uses this mode could have for everything from gaming to social media and video streaming. On the backside of the phone, the cover display adjacent to the rear camera also comes with a few software tweaks, aside from showing notifications and calls the cover display also shows multimedia controls allowing the user to pause and play music without ever having to open the phone.

Adequate lenses, advanced software

For the most part, the Galaxy Z Flip carries decent cameras both front and back but some users and tech reviewers alike were saddened by the quality of the handset's cameras. This lack of satisfaction comes not from a lack of quality but rather a subversion of expectations, despite being revealed alongside the Galaxy S20, a cutting edge technological marvel, the Galaxy Z Flip is nothing like its technological cousin.

Setting aside these expectations, users will see that generally, the handset's cameras are more than sufficient for capturing precious moments in any lighting condition, though the night mode has issues when it comes to moving subjects, the daytime shots are without a doubt the product of a medium flagship-level phone. Colors are vibrant, and both the 12MP wide lens and 12MP Ultrawide lens do well to produce great photos. Surprisingly, the 10MP camera housed in the front of the device does better than many other selfie cameras, this particular selfie cam does well to capture detail without blurring facial features and edges. With that said, if one is unsatisfied with the quality of the front selfie camera the user can always use the cover display to take a rear camera selfie with ease, all thanks to the folding ability of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Decent battery and captivating connectivity

The Galaxy Z Flip's greatest flaw is perhaps its battery, with a size of 3,300mAh the battery on this device is a tad smaller than most. However, after some testing, the handset put out a decent amount of screen-on time managing roughly 6 hours, a respectable output considering the phone's size. Samsung managed this longer than average battery life by using not one battery but two, using a dual-battery design the Galaxy Z flip can outlast its fellow modern flip phone the Motorola Razr by a considerable margin. Helping the user stay connected through this handset's six-hour operating time is a plethora of sensor and location systems, the device supports 4G LTE, WiFi, and Bluetooth 5.1 connections; as for location services, the Galaxy Z Flip utilizes GPS, Galileo, Glonass, and BeiDou satellites to ensure that the user stays connected wherever there's a signal.

A future flagship in the making

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is not a flagship contender, and to pass it off as otherwise would be a grievous and blatant lie. Despite recently debuting alongside the galaxy S20 and its other variants, and being marketed as the future of smartphones taking a brand new shape, the Galaxy Z Flip is not meant to compete with other flagships. All aspects considered this phone may not be a flagship competitor, but it is without a doubt a folding device dominator; Samsung designed this phone to compete alongside the likes of the Motorola Razr, HUAWEI Mate X, and other folding smartphones, to state that this phone competes well would be a serious understatement. Equipped with a top of the line Snapdragon SoC, a beautiful ultra-thin glass folding display, a great camera with cutting edge software to capture every moment, and an intuitive design that not only copies but improves upon folding phones, this device is well prepared to dominate its respective market and in the process provide a truly unique experience to smartphone enthusiasts and everyday consumers all around the globe. Samsung has already shown the usefulness of a folding device, and though this piece of kit has yet to meet the requirements of a present-day flagship smartphone, with time Samsung may yet make a flagship from this modern-day flip phone.
