About Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: Cosmic Capabilities, Universal Utility

Today, Samsung has numerous flagship lines but none are more iconic than its Galaxy series.

This series came into existence over 10 years ago and has been hailed as a staple in the mobile device market ever since; but like all things, making a great smartphone takes practice, feedback, and careful planning, fortunately, the brand has had years upon years of experience creating devices which cater to consumers all around the globe, suffice to say, this company has competed against other dominant brands for years rarely ever losing out and almost always winning the top spot in the smartphone spotlight. In the latest technological race to create stronger, faster, and better smartphones, Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra is a formula 1 car pitted against sedans, minivans, and the occasional Ferrari. The device itself trumps other smartphones both physically and technologically and the added fame of being Samsung's most advanced mobile communication platform has lit the media and technology community ablaze with excitement. As the official carrier for the company's most advanced smartphone camera, and the second-fastest SoC in the world: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, it's understandably an object of great interest and easily at the top of many people's wishlists. Shipping with the smartphone in-box is, a 25W fast charger which does a fine job of quickly charging the phone, as well as a USB-C cable, and Samsung's signature, premium AKG in-ear headphones with several replacement tips, depending on the region the contents may differ but ultimately these are the essential accessories.

  • It supports 5G connection
  • It is Samsung's most advanced smartphone to date
  • It has a massive 5,000mAh Battery
  • It has an immense 6.9in screen
  • It has the highest-rated SoC in any android phone
  • It contains the best camera engineered by Samsung by far
  • The 120Hz display provides phenomenal imagery

  • Its massive size makes it difficult for some to hold
  • It is quite expensive
  • There is no headphone jack
  • The 120Hz display stresses the battery
  • It has limited availability in certain regions

A heaping handful:

With a body that measures almost 6.7 inches in height, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is by no means a small device, in fact, it's one of the largest phones on the market, rivaled only by HUAWEI's current "Honor" line of smartphones. On the whole, the phone is a curvy piece of equipment, rounded on all edges front and back, this design was implemented in a bid to make the phone easier to handle given its rather large size. Weighing in at 7.7oz the device, though not necessarily heavy, has some considerable heft to it. Whether this weight will be an issue depends entirely on the consumer's preferences. Eyeing the phone starting from the top the holder is met with a sim card tray that stores a micro sim as well as a MicroSD which enables a whopping storage expansion of up to 1TB. Below that on the screen itself is an "O" shape in the infinity display which houses the 40MP selfie camera, embedded in the sides as always are the volume rockers and power button. Despite having Bixby software, the device does not have a Bixby button, what the phone does have, however, is the proud title of perhaps being Samsung's most durable phone to date. Bordered on all sides by a polished steel band, and sandwiched between two sheets of Gorilla Glass 6, the phone is well guarded against everyday wear and extremely resistant to micro scratches, ensuring the phone stays pristine and scratch-free for longer. On top of all this, the phone is beautiful in it's smooth, simplistic design, no surprise as this is, after all, a Galaxy series device.

Bigger is better:

A wise man once said: "don't judge a book by its cover" often times this saying rings true, however, the same cannot be said for smartphones, because if there is one feature that can make or break a device, it would be the display. Luckily, this phone will have no trouble persuading buyers thanks to its 6.9 inches QuadHD, AMOLED, Infinity-O display, with an astounding refresh rate of up to 120Hz and HDR 10+ compatibility. With specs like these this handset is difficult to top, in fact, he only thing better than having a flawless display is having the ability to tweak the display resolution to suit one's needs, be it battery conservation, gaming, or media viewing. The manufacturer has done just this by giving the display three resolution settings: QuadHD+ 3200x1400 pixels (highest), Full HD+ 2400x1080 pixels, HD+ 1600x720 pixels (lowest). Additionally, the consumer's viewing experience can be tweaked further by adjusting the brightness, blue light filter, color profile, and other settings. For all it is worth, a high refresh rate can sometimes do more harm to a device than good.

It is common knowledge that a 120Hz refresh rate can put a serious strain on a handset and its battery, with this in mind, the Galaxy S20 Ultra was given the capability to switch between 120Hz and 60Hz. The highly customizable settings pay homage to Samsung's forward-thinking attitude and serve to supplement the phone's already impressive Display.

One processor to rule them all:

Being the powerhouse company that it is, Samsung ensured that its flagship handset would pack the processing power required of a modern smartphone. The company also made sure that aside from being able to support its hardware the device would also have the fastest, highest rated system on a chip, ever to be mounted on any android phone. This processor was none other than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Whether the buyer chooses the 12GB RAM version or the pricier 16GB RAM variant, the result is the same: pure, ludicrously efficient, computing power.

The manufacturers were not boasting when they stressed the actual power that their flagship phone possessed, testing with 3DMark, AnTuTu, and GeekBench, yielded an utter blowout in terms of competition amongst other smartphones. The Galaxy S20 Ultra outperformed 99% of its competitors and lost only to Apple's A13 Bionic processor. Regardless, at these levels of performance, 2nd place is by no means a loss; no matter what is required of it, the handset powers through endless calculations without so much as breaking a sweat, this gives the user a silky smooth phone that never lags and never falters, even when the display refresh rate is maxed out the phone experiences only a slight dip in speed, to remedy this, the S20 Ultra has a memory maintenance feature which clears data and frees up memory to allow full performance regardless of the computing tasks at hand.

Tried and tested:

For the latest hardware package, nothing less than the best software will suffice. As such, this handset and its subsequent variants, all run Android 10, with a Samsung One UI 2.0. For some, the look of the user interface is a point of contention as it is different from the standard Android user interface. It seems, however, these differences are quite subtle, as the device retains the standard software features of all Android phones. The main upgrade with Android 10 is the ease of access to settings, apps, and other personalization options. Along with connecting users to their phones Android 10 aims to connect users with each other through the integration of Google's Video calling app: Google Duo as an added bonus Google Duo will allow its users to video chat in full HD allowing clearer, cleaner, and faster connection. This device is not without its flaws as evidenced by some users identifying software glitches with autofocus for the camera modules. As time passes consumers can rest easy knowing that Samsung is doing well to address this problem and is rumored to release a software update soon to remedy the autofocus issues this will eliminate the few flaws that plague the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

The eyes of the galaxy:

Equipped with the most advanced camera ever mounted on an Android phone, the Galaxy S20 Ultra's camera module is a massive array of not 3, but 4 cameras these consist of a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 108MP Wide-angle Camera, a 48MP Telephoto camera, and Samsung's very own DepthVision camera. The DepthVision Camera is a camera that can judge depth as well as the distance to the subject in order to aid in achieving the best shots by eliminating motion blur, sway, and other factors. Like all aspects of this device, the camera is a bodacious piece of technology and it is made even more unbelievable with the capability to utilize a 100x zoom. It should be noted that when shooting at such distances, even the camera AI of this device cannot eliminate errors from amplified hand movements. As for Night shots, the Night mode on this handset captures lowlight environments in great detail allowing even the bark of a dimly lit tree to be distinguished. Last but certainly not least, the phone caters to influencers and social media users as it can utilize one-shot mode. This setting captures multiple photos and videos of a dynamic scene, it then collates these videos and photos, edits them, and presents the finished products to the user, all in a bid to make that one special shot easier to capture.

Supersized battery cells:

A Powerhouse device such as this requires an equally monstrous power source and it comes in the form of a 5000mAh LiPo battery with fast charging capabilities and a service life that depends entirely on the user's phone usage. The biggest issue many consumers have when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is the possibility of early battery death due to the ridiculous power requirements of the 120Hz refresh rate and QuadHD resolution. However, since both the refresh rate and resolution may be adjusted, all it takes to extend the service life of the battery is some periodic conservative phone usage. With such a large battery the one day charge requirement is easily met; so long as the phone is not utilizing maximum performance, the battery is likely to remain charged for a relatively long period of time. When it finally does draw near to low-battery conditions a quick charge will go a long way thanks to the fast charging feature of the smartphone.

Universal connections:

Supplemented with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X55, 5G modem, this handset comes prepared for 5G connection, anything from Sub6 to mmWave connections is fair game. In lemans; terms any 5G network can be utilized due to the diversity of the phone's 5G modem. Given the fact that 5G connections are still relatively new, some users may be hard-pressed to find 5G network providers. Yet another notable innovation with this handset is the existence of Bluetooth Music share, this allows users to pair to Bluetooth speakers through another recognized phone. Put simply, instead of unpairing the primary phone that is linked to a specific speaker, the users can enable music sharing and pair with the speaker through the primary phone itself. Connecting to one's device can be just as important as connecting to society. Guarding these connections is a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display, as well as the company's signature face recognition software.

Unending innovations:

Compared to its predecessor the Galaxy S10, this particular handset is leagues above any smartphone that came before it. Be it camera modules, processing power, Display features, or network connection.

The only aspect in which the two phones are similar is in terms of physical size. With all its bells and whistles, this device looks, feels, and acts like the technological marvel it was advertised to be. Unfortunately, technology is not cheap and this phone is no exception because for all its exorbitant features it comes with an equally exorbitant price tag, this is perhaps the greatest point of contention for most buyers. Whomsoever decides to purchase this smartphone may take comfort in knowing that this product is worth every penny it sells for. From the stunningly realistic display to the ridiculously ludicrous levels of processing performance as well as the unforgettable cutting-edge camera model, this is a device that allows users to do just about anything from playing online mobile games at the highest resolutions to photographing scenes from several meters away, all while running simultaneous apps with massive calculations. When it comes to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the stars are the limit.
