About realme C12

Realme C12, a Battery King with an Unbeatable Price

There's no doubt about it, good phones are getting cheap, and cheap phones are getting good. This is a phrase that gets thrown around more and more, especially in recent years, with good reason of course. Done are the days that you have to spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars just to get a smartphone with all the latest specs and features, most of which you won't need. Not everyone has the means to buy the latest and greatest, which is why more and more smartphone companies release smartphones that are more attainable for the masses, and what Realme has done with its latest phone, the Realme C12, is no different. The Realme C12 is a solid entry-level smartphone, boasting a gigantic 6.5-inch full-screen display, a triple camera system at the rear, a decent front-facing camera, dual-sim capabilities, expandable storage, 3GB of RAM, and a speedy octa-core CPU. It also has a headphone jack, which is a feature that is almost hard to find in recent smartphone releases. What's even more impressive is that the C12 houses a massive 6,000 mAh battery, which could easily function as a power bank since it supports reverse charging. This smartphone also has a rear fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.0 for fast connectivity, and a premium-feeling fit and finish. All these features and beastly battery life for a very low price of only Php 5,990.00 or around $123.00 - ridiculously cheap. This is one of those devices that prove that you don't need to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a smartphone. Realme has stepped up their game and will easily dominate the entry-level market, and other companies will hopefully follow suit.

  • Has one of, if not the, best battery life in any smartphone
  • Has a big display for viewing content or scrolling through media
  • Is built with premium-feeling materials
  • Has a headphone jack
  • Has a rear fingerprint scanner
  • Contains a very capable camera system
  • Has dual-sim and expandable storage capabilities
  • Features a simple UI with few bloatware apps
  • Is unbelievably affordable

  • Only has a 720p resolution display
  • Cannot play games at high settings
  • Only has 32gb of built-in storage
  • Still uses micro-USB instead of USB Type-C
  • It charges rather slowly with only a 10W adapter
  • It is not 5G capable
  • It has no IP rating for water and dust resistance
  • Not a pocketable device with its big size and weight

Keeping It Simple

The latest smartphones from big companies like Samsung and Apple have one thing in common: they feel very premium and exclusive. Most high-end devices are made with glass and metal, which users already expect for the thousands of dollars they pay. Realme on the other hand took a different approach. They wanted to make a device that feels premium but doesn't demand a high budget like all the others. That's exactly what they did with the Realme C12, as at first glance, it looks just about as good as any other flagship smartphone (unless you are a nitpicker), but at a fraction of the cost. Once again, good phones are getting cheap, and cheap phones are getting good. Upon looking at the Realme C12, you would first notice its size. One could consider it a phablet - a combination of a phone and a tablet - and upon putting it in your hand, you would immediately feel its heftiness. At 209g, it is indeed a heavy device, and for good reason. Realme has put good use of space for this large footprint, and the consumer definitely benefits from that. At the front of the device is a large 6.5-inch LCD display with a tear-drop notch that houses the front-facing camera. The bezels are minimal, and in combination with the small notch, watching videos or streaming content on this screen is very delightful. The display is also protected with Corning Gorilla Glass, a standard even for high-end phones, which is great for durability and those unavoidable accidental drops. The front may not look like the latest flagship smartphones, with hole-punch cutouts or pop-up cameras, but it serves its purpose very well. Moving on to the back of the device, you will see a gorgeous textured geometric finish, either in Coral Red or Marine Blue, giving it a classy aesthetic. The borders at the back are curved for better ergonomics, and at the upper left corner is a square camera module, similar to that of the latest iPhone and Pixel smartphones. The module is black, a good contrast to the rest of the color, and contains its 3-camera system. At the upper middle portion of the back of the device is a fingerprint scanner, positioned just so the average person can reach it easily to unlock the phone. This is a nice touch and goes to show that Realme focused more on functionality rather than groundbreaking design. Obviously, some cost-cutting had to be made to house all of the device's features, and the materials used for the device is one of them. The body is made out of Polycarbonate which does not feel as premium as glass or metal but still feels durable and good enough for most users.

A Display That Gets The Job Done

High refresh rate, Super AMOLED, Curved, - these are just some of the terms used for describing the displays of the latest and greatest flagship devices from companies like Samsung, Oneplus, and Huawei. Unfortunately, none of these are present in the Realme C12, especially considering that high-end flagships cost thousands of dollars but the C12 only costs $123. Again, some cost-cutting has to be made to produce an entry-level smartphone, and for the C12, the display is one of those affected. The display is large at 6.5-inches, but the resolution is only 720p. This gives it a pixel density of only 270ppi. When viewed from a normal distance, the quality will be good enough for most users, but looking closely at the screen you may see some individual pixels. On a good note, the IPS panel produces vibrant colors with high contrast, so images and videos still look good. Unfortunately, the brightness can be quite lacking, especially outdoors. But if you want to use this device mainly at home for watching movies or playing games, the display will get the job done. The refresh rate of the display is 60hz, and at this price point, no complaints will be made. Overall, the display is nothing special but is good enough.

Numbers Don't Mean Everything

In a world of fast-moving technology, benchmark scores have become an easy tool to track performance and improvements of various devices without having the need to have them all side by side and comparing them individually. For smartphones, the best performing processor is either made by Qualcomm or Apple, producing scores that are almost as good as laptops. These flagships even have 12GB and above for RAM, making multitasking a breeze. These top of the class processing power increases the price of these devices, with some even costing more than $2,000, but for the average consumer, is this necessary? Instead of making the fastest and best-performing smartphone, Realme took a different approach and instead made a smartphone that performs daily tasks well and functions as needed. The Realme C12 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G35 chip with an octa-core CPU, PowerVR GE8320 GPU, and 3GB of RAM. These components are more than good enough for daily tasks such as taking photos, browsing social media, or streaming videos online. Scrolling through the home and app screens is smooth and buttery as well. Loading apps, especially when switching between multiple apps rapidly, can be slow sometimes, but is still faster than any other device at this price point. For benchmarks, the C12 scored 108,120 in AnTuTu V8, 168(single-core), and 943(multi-core) in Geekbench, and 5,937 in PCMark. These numbers may not seem much, especially when compared to flagships that cost 10x more, but the C12 performs well enough for the average consumer. This device is also capable for gaming, but you may have to turn the settings to low especially in games such as Mobile Legends or Call of Duty: Mobile to get a higher framerate. For more casual games though, you will not have any issues. Needless to say, Realme made a good choice with the components of the C12, making it perform way better than expected.

Slick and Modern UI

The Realme C12 is running on Realme UI v1.0 based on Android 10. This overlay on top of android is very speedy, as it almost is just stock Android with just a few added welcome features. The UI is user-friendly and easy to navigate, unlike some budget smartphones with skins that are outrageously distracting and buggy. The color palette and included wallpapers are attractive, and the icons are rounded, too, which gives the home and app screens a very minimalistic motif. The UI also has support for Dark Mode, a very neat feature that makes everything easy on the eyes especially when using the phone at bedtime. Realme Share is also installed, which makes transferring files between Realme devices quick and easy. Game Center and Game Space are also loaded in, a feature that is best suited for gamers. App cloner is also included, which is a nifty feature that allows you to open two instances of the same app or game at once, but with different accounts. Split-screen is also available, which works well with the large screen, so if you want to watch a Youtube video while reading on your browser, you could. The usual Google services and apps are pre-installed as expected. Agoda, Facebook, and Lazada are also pre-installed, but if you don't want to use those, you could easily just uninstall them.

Unassumingly Capable Cameras

The Realme C12 is equipped with a triple camera system consisting of a 13MP primary with an f/2.2 aperture, a 2MP monochrome sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. Surprisingly, the primary camera is capable of taking great photos, especially with enough lighting. The image quality it produces is clear with punchy greens, reds, and blues. It also has a night mode that takes good low-light shots.. Taking close-up shots with the macro lens is very impressive as well, with little-to-no visible grain. Selfies are decent as well, which is unexpected at this price point. It would have been great to get a wide-angle lens, but overall, the average person can make this camera system work very pleasantly. If you have realistic expectations, you will be happily surprised by the cameras of the C12. For video, however, you can only shoot at a maximum of 1080p 30fps. If you love vlogging or making films, you may have to look elsewhere, but for taking photos, this device is very capable.

A Smartphone and Power Bank in One

The best feature of the Realme C12 is its battery life. With 6000mAh, it can literally last days before needing a charge. A neat feature it also has is reverse charging and combined with the beastly battery, you can full-charge another smartphone with your device and still have some leftover! The battery is rated at 17 hours and 21 minutes according to PC Mark, and in the testing of Yugatech, the phone lasted 25 hours and 32 minutes in a video loop test. Even if you try, it will be really hard to drain out the phone's battery in one day, while some smartphones that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars need to be charged more than once a day. Unfortunately, the device only supports 10w charging, so charging speeds are slow, but for the battery life that you get, you will be charging seldomly anyway. For connectivity, the C12 has dual-SIM with 4G-LTE, WiFi, and Bluetooth 5.0. These are pretty basic and are seen in almost all smartphones. It connects via micro-USB. We would have loved to see USB Type-C and 5G thrown in here, but again with the price, it's very difficult to complain.

A Phone For The Masses

The Realme C12 is one of the best budget smartphones right now. It has a large screen, good cameras, and an unbelievably huge battery. It performs daily tasks well with its octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM. It also has a headphone jack, a fingerprint scanner, expandable storage, dual-sim slots, and a premium weight and feel, all while being priced at only Php 5,990.00 or around $123 converted. If you're looking for a smartphone that will serve you well day-in and day-out without having to spend lots, then the Realme C12 is perfect for you.
