OPPO F5 Launches in the Philippines for PHP 15,990

A new selfie-centric smartphone from OPPO makes its debut in the local market, and it comes with some modern upgrades like an 18:9 display.

OPPO has made quite a name for itself as the brand for selfie-centric smartphones, and that's why there's a lot of hype and anticipation for the OPPO F5, the latest flagship selfie smartphone from the Chinese company. The wait is over, as OPPO has officially launched the F5 in the Philippine market.

Following a few weeks of advertisements and teaser posters in the malls, the OPPO F5 is officially out, with a modern take that fits into the 2017 design aesthetic of 18:9 aspect ratio phones. The F5 has a 6-inch FHD+ display with a 2,160 x 1,080 resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The phone has very minimal bezels, although you can still see the little bezels framing the screen on the sides and on the top and the bottom, but it's a very good screen-to-body ratio.

Inside is a MediaTek MT6763V chipset and processor with a Mali-G71 GPU, backed by a generous helping of 4 GB RAM / 32 GB ROM (Black and Gold) and 6 GB RAM / 64 GB ROM (Red) model. The rear camera is 16 megapixels and has LED flash, but the real star of the show is the 20-megapixel front camera with an AI-powered beauty mode. As with all selfie-centric cameras, the front-camera is better endowed compared to the rear camera, and the post-processing effects allow you to improve on the selfie shots you take. It's likely to have more or less the same functionality as previous OPPO selfie-centric devices, so we have a good idea what to expect from the front camera's capabilities.

The new thing it has going for it is that it also works with the phone's facial recognition security unlock feature. Following the example of the iPhone X, the OPPO F5 can be unlocked using your face as your pass code, although it's unclear at this point how far the facial recognition software has come since the early days of implementation. Fortunately, if the facial recognition ends up flakey the phone still has a fingerprint scanner at the rear should it end up more efficient, or if you simply choose not to use facial recognition.

The battery is 3,200 mAh and the phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat with OPPO's ColorOS 3.2 UI on top. All in all, it's an exciting phone to watch. The price is about right at PHP 15,990, and pre-orders start today, October 27 until November 3. Pre-orders will be eligible for a free Bluetooth speaker worth PHP 2,990.

The OPPO F5 will be available in 3 color option, namely, Black, Red and Gold. It will go on sale nationwide at various retail channels on November 4. For those with postpaid plans the F5 can also be obtained through Smart Postpaid at Plan 599 (with a two-year lock in) starting in November, and Globe will also have a package sometime in December.
