OPPO A72 5G, World's First Dimensity 720 5G SoC Phone Launched

The OPPO A72 5G comes months after the 4G variant of the smartphone was launched in April.

After months of speculation and leaks, the OPPO A72 5G has finally launched in China. The new smartphone with an upgraded network and display follows the 4G variant of the OPPO A72 launched in April this year. The new smartphone uses a MediaTek SoC instead of a Snapdragon 665 SoC found in its 4G variant. At the same time, it mounts a downgraded rear-camera setup.

About the OPPO A72 5G

Design and Display

The OPPO A72 5G from the front looks similar to its 4G variant. The device still sports the same punch-hole camera cutout and thick chin while the fingerprint scanner retains its position - side-mounted. It's a different story on the back though; the camera housing is square-shaped compared to the rectangular-shaped housing present on its 4G counterpart.

The OPPO A72 5G sports a 6.5-inch FHD+ (1,080x2,400) LCD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 90.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. However, it now supports a 90Hz refresh rate versus the standard 60Hz refresh rate on the non-5G A72 variant. The OPPO A72 5G is available in Neon, Simple Black, and Violet color options.

Performance and Storage

The OPPO A72 5G makes use of the freshly announced 5G integrated Dimensity 720 SoC from MediaTek, thus becoming the world's first smartphone to use it. The SoC is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The phone comes with expandable storage support via microSD.

The OPPO A72 5G draws fuel from a 4,040mAh battery armed with an 18W fast charging support. In terms of audio performance, the smartphone comes with dual stereo speakers with Hi-Res Audio and Dirac support.

Cameras

As opposed to the quad rear cameras of the non-5G OPPO A72, the new 5G variant makes do with a triple-camera setup. The camera modules include a 48MP f/1.79 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 2MP black and white sensor.

Upfront, a 16MP selfie shooter lies inside the punch-hole cutout. It's the same selfie camera mounted on the 4G variant.

Software and Others

On the software side of things, the OPPO A72 5G boots ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10. Among other things, the smartphone supports 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS/A-GPS, Bluetooth, USB Type-C port, and a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack.

In the Philippines, the 4G variant is known as the OPPO A92. Given that the 4G variant was just launched locally last month, it's hard to assume for the 5G variant to follow a release anytime soon. In adition, as of this writing, there's no word regarding its availability outside of China yet.
