About OPPO A12

Oppo A12, A Budget Device Done Right

China is home to dozens of multi-million dollar mobile communication companies. The abundance of mobile phone manufacturers in this region means consumers have a wide range of brands to choose from. However, for the companies themselves, this abundance creates a highly competitive mobile market. To succeed, brands must distinguish themselves by any means, and to stay relevant these manufacturers must constantly adapt to the ever-growing consumer crowd. Oppo is among one of the few companies to properly manage a strong foothold not only in the Chinese market but also in the global market. Having just been founded in 2004, Oppo is a neophyte to the world of smartphones; but over the course of 16 years, the brand has become a household name among consumers all over the world. As a new company in a market already dominated by names such as HUAWEI and Oneplus, Oppo wisely decided to devote more focus to the mid-level market segment. Instead of trying to dethrone a well-rooted competitor, the company would plant its own roots in the largest consumer crowds. By following this plan Oppo built a reputation as a brand that manufactured reliable entry-level and mid-range phones for very affordable price points. In 2020 the company's plan remains unchanged with the release of the Oppo A12. As a Modern budget phone, the A12 packs a plethora of high tech features including the presence of a powerful Mediatek processor, as well as the use of Android 9.0 and a speedy rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Buyers of this device can expect to receive it in a pure white box with Oppo branding. Shipping with the device is a flexible clear case, as well as a SIM ejector tool, a 5W power adapter, and a micro-USB charging cable. Though earphones are not included, the device does have a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio output.

Pros

  • Has an extremely cheap price point
  • Supports Dual Nano-SIMs
  • Dedicated MicroSD slot for storage expansion
  • A decent rear fingerprint scanner
  • Unique rear panel design
  • Gorilla glass display protection
  • Possesses excellent mobile gaming capability
  • Great selfie processing software
  • User-friendly Android software with ColorOS overlay
  • Has a very bright screen for outdoor use

Cons

  • The plastic frame is highly susceptible to drops
  • Does not support fast charging
  • Still uses micro-USB connections
  • Does not support 5G connections
  • More powerful midrange devices exist
  • Better cameras exist among competitors

Highly Ergonomic And Uniquely Geometric

It is no secret that many facets of production go into manufacturing a good and proper smartphone. All of these facets come together to give a handset a particular set of characteristics. Some device characteristics can only be experienced after extended periods of use; however, one immediate telltale sign of a well-produced device is the overall design of the phone. Consumers have the innate ability to pick up a device and "feel" the quality of production behind it. Well aware of this, Oppo did well to maximize overall quality while minimizing production costs to keep the A12's price point extremely low. The results of this endeavor are a piece of kit that looks just as good as it feels.

Standing at 6.14 inches tall by 2.97 inches wide, with a thickness of 0.33 inches, the Oppo A12 is a heaping handful of a handset with some noticeable heft. In the hand, the device feels solid much like any midrange or high-end phone. The major difference with the A12 however, is the fact that its chassis is composed entirely of high-density plastic, because of this, users would do well to invest in a durable protective case or at the very least avoid any drops as this would cause serious cosmetic damage to the unique design present on every A12 model. Consumers can exercise their buyer's right by choosing between the phone's Blue or Black variant. Both iterations come with an eye-catching geometric rear panel, which refracts light and adds greatly to the overall aesthetic quality of this device. Among its competitors, the Oppo A12 is one of the few Budget devices that does not feel flimsy or poorly made, if the device were handled by an unsuspecting consumer they would surely be none the wiser as to the plastic composition and extremely low price point of the A12. In terms of design, this piece of the kit meets all the standards expected of an upper mid-range device, and users are sure to be delighted by the device's overall design.

Minimized Notches, And Maximized Viewing Area

Among the many parts of a smartphone, one of the most costly parts to produce aside from the processor is the display. Many flagships and upper midrange devices use Super AMOLED displays due to their ability to accurately replicate colors and provide exquisite clarity and depth. Unfortunately, such displays are extremely expensive, and the use of an AMOLED screen on a budget device would severely raise the overall cost of production. To address this and keep production costs to a minimum, the Oppo A12 was given an IPS LCD screen. These displays have a color range similar to those of AMOLED screens, the A12's screen, in particular, can produce a range of 16 million colors. Though the color replication may be on par with higher devices, the handset's IPS LCD screen falls short in overall screen clarity, with a maximum HD resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels. This is unsurprising as LCDs do not generally have high resolutions, fortunately, what this device's screen lacks in pixels, it more than makes up for in overall brightness. The Oppo A12's LCD makes use of a white backlight to produce different colors, this backlight allows the handset's screen brightness to reach a decent 450 nits. With such a bright screen, this handset can be used in almost any lighting condition be it outdoors or indoors. It should be noted, however, that overly bright screens may be detrimental to a user's eyes, and the use of the A12's night mode is highly encouraged to minimize overall eye strain. As a form of icing on the proverbial cake, Oppo went through the trouble of minimizing the A12's selfie notch to allow for as much available viewing area as possible, though only a small amount of display area has been added, the gesture is much appreciated by consumers as the selfie camera's intrusion is a bit less pronounced.

A Wallet-Friendly Phone With a Knack for Gaming

In the past, cell phones were mainly used for making calls and sending messages, the presence of mobile games such as Snake, and Tetris were simply an extra feature to help users kill time. Today, however, smartphones have evolved into extremely multifaceted devices with many users using their handsets for everything from surfing the web to playing PUBG and other FPS games. The masterful minds at Oppo took this into account and made sure to give the A12 the means to handle such tasks with ease. To handle multiple processing loads and mobile games with heavy graphics, the Oppo A12 was powered with Mediatek's Helio P35 processor. Although this SoC is quite old, Mediatek has made a name for itself by manufacturing budget processors that are highly adept at running games and handling processor-intensive tasks. With eight cores, and a max CPU frequency of 2.3GHz the Helio P35 makes short work of basic mobile games, additionally, apps such as COD and PUBG run equally well with slightly lowered settings. Many consumers will be delighted at the idea of a decent mobile gaming phone that retails for less than 150 dollars. As an older processor, the Helio P35 is not without its flaws, when handling multiple applications or particularly heavy graphics the A12 does experience lag and latency, however, this is to be expected and is easily remedied by reducing the overall load on the device by either closing unused applications or simply lowering mobile game graphics.

Android 9 With an Oppo Touch

Any handset would be useless without the proper software to allow consumers to utilize the device to its fullest extent. For the software engineers at Oppo, the decision to use Google's Android 9.0 was a no brainer. Google has been building Android software since the creation of the first android smartphone, in terms of experience, Google is the absolute master of software creation. This knowledge however is far from secret, almost every android brand in the world makes use of Google's software, hence the challenge for Oppo arises with the task of making Android 9.0 unique for the A12. To tailor the operating system to the handset, Oppo integrated its signature ColorOS overlay. Aside from a number of cosmetic interface changes, ColorOS allows users to enjoy a suite of game and system enhancements to bump up device performance whenever the need may arise. For gaming applications, ColorOS has a game space from which users can launch any mobile games and enable a game boost. For overall systems management, consumers can make use of an intuitive system manager which allows settings to be tweaked in order to reduce battery drain or processor load. Oppo did well with the integration of Android and ColorOS, the intuitive and easy to operate interface means users can fully make use of all the A12's capabilities at a moment's notice.

Good Things Come in Twos

Oppo is no stranger to building decent camera assemblies, the success of the brand's F series is a solid indicator of this. With such proficiency, it's unsurprising that the A12 is a great selfie camera. The device certainly does not match the quality of flagships, however for the low price point and sheer value-for-money the A12 does well to make the most of what it has. The front camera has a resolution of 5MP and though this may seem low, Oppo's expertise in selfie-taking truly shows as the device's camera AI beautifully renders most shots in decent lighting. For the rear camera assembly, the makers steered clear of any quad or tri-cameras as this would only jack up the overall price of the phone. Instead, a simple dual-lens camera assembly was chosen, consisting of a 13MP wide lens and a 2MP depth lens. Consumers can enjoy decent photos with the rear camera assembly, however low light conditions often prove to be too much for the A12 to handle, and picture quality drops severely. On the whole, this handset's cameras more than meet the needs of most consumers in search of a budget device, to expect anything more from this phone would only serve to invite disappointment.

Plenty of Power to Seize the Day

Among modern devices, there is an unspoken rule that any decent device should, at the very least, be able to make it through a day on a single charge. Well aware of this, Oppo gave their handset a plentiful power source with a capacity of 4230mAh. For some phones, this is nowhere near enough energy to meet the one day charge requirement, but the A12 gets by with a bit of smart energy efficiency. Every major component in the device from the display to the processor can be adjusted from the system interface in order to decrease power drain and lengthen battery life. This allows users to actively monitor and manage their power consumption so there is always enough juice left to meet consumer needs.

Modern Connections

In making a budget device, certain measures must be taken to keep the overall cost of a handset down, but one aspect in which Oppo spared no expense was connection capabilities. The A12 supports almost every modern network from 4G LTE to 2G with the obvious exception of 5G networks. This connectivity also extends to other devices and wifi networks thanks to the presence of Bluetooth 5.0 and hotspot capabilities. Location services are decent with this device, hence users can roam far and wide without the worry of losing connection. In terms of modern connections, this device has just about all the bells and whistles it needs to satisfy any consumer.

The Daily Driver For The Masses

Purchasing budget phones can sometimes be a slippery slope, consumers sometimes run the risk of buying a device that isn't worth the already low price it was marketed for. Fortunately, this is not the case with the Oppo A12. With a wide array of high tech features including a commendable processor and a respectable battery, this handset is as well equipped as a budget device can be. For users in search of an affordable everyday phone that easily doubles as a great selfie shooter, the A12 is a prime candidate.
