About Nokia 8.3 5G

Nokia 8.3 5G, The Futuristic, Budget-friendly Flagship

Twenty years ago, the head honchos of the mobile device market were very different from the leading smartphone manufacturers of today. In the early 2000s, the brands that set the standard for mobile device makers were neither Samsung nor Apple, instead, the kings of the technological competition were Motorola and by an even larger margin, Nokia.

Two decades is an eternity in terms of technological development and in that time both of these mobile moguls were dethroned as the age of smartphones arrived. After selling its mobile division to Microsoft, Nokia's smartphone production plummeted and the brand faded beneath the shadow of newer more advanced competitors. Recently, however, a company by the name of HMD Global took up the mantle of both Nokia's smartphone and mobile device division, under new management the company flourished and has even begun to give chase to the companies it once dominated.

Where most companies create monstrously high-performing smartphones with equally gargantuan price tags, Nokia has chosen to follow its old path of creating mid to high-level phones with truly affordable price points. Users from all over the globe have praised this company for its ability to provide flagship specs without charging flagship prices. For the year 2020, the company has decided to release a more affordable iteration of its flagship Nokia 9 Pureview line, dubbed the Nokia 8.3 5G, this smartphone is as its name suggests, capable of 5G connections. In addition, it utilizes a stunning FullHD+ display and a comprehensive ZEISS quad-camera array, if there's anything to be learned from sony's smartphones, it's that ZEISS lenses aid greatly in ramping up the quality of a camera. The greatest feature of the Nokia 8.3 5G is arguably its price, at around 667USD, this phone gives users next year's connections for last year's mid-range price.

  • The onboard processor is among the fastest for Android phones
  • The quad-camera array has was made in collaboration with ZEISS
  • The FullHD+ display is quite large at 6.81 inches
  • The power button has a speedy, integrated fingerprint sensor
  • The device supports global 5G connections
  • The battery is relatively large at 4500mAh
  • The phone's price tag makes it one of the cheapest 5G phones
  • The onboard software is Android 10 with an Android one overlay
  • The device has a dedicated interchangeable MicroSD slot
  • The SoC is energy efficient allowing for more reserve power

  • The display is composed of IPS LCD as opposed to AMOLED
  • The screen refresh rate is restricted to 60Hz
  • There are better smartphone screens for a similar price point
  • Some competition phones offer snapdragon 865 for cheaper
  • The edge to edge screen has a selfie hole-punch in the left corner
  • The phone has a slight chin at the bottom of the display
  • Some smartphones offer a larger battery capacity for a lower price

Inspired by the beauty of nature

When it comes to manufacturing smartphones, Nokia has had a rollercoaster experience in consumer reception. For some buyers, the Nokia smartphones of old have left a bad taste in terms of aesthetics and overall design; but with a new lease on life, the company's mobile division has begun churning out some truly unique and visually pleasing pieces. As a result of this reinvigorated drive for aesthetic pleasure, the Nokia 8.3 5G is one piece of kit that is a true delight to see and handle because, before even lifting the handset, users are immediately drawn to the ornate, high-gloss, pearlescent design. Clad in shining hues of blue and green, strewn over a black background the rear panel of the phone looks like something akin to the Aurora Borealis light displays of the North Pole. With this scene instantly coming to mind the designers of this device gave the handset's singular color offering the fitting name of "polar night"; despite the lack of options with regard to color, any user would be hard-pressed to ask for a better alternative design. In terms of ergonomics and physical profile, the handset has a curved rear panel similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S10, the front of the device however is flat with curved edges all around, much like that of an iPhone 8. The rear panel and front display are joined at all edges by a thick side frame of undisclosed material; but if the Nokia 8.3 5G takes after it's higher iteration, then the band is most likely composed of high-grade aluminum while the top and bottom layers are made up of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. As the product of a thrifty manufacturer, this handset is likely to share materials with its elder brother and as such, it will most likely be both shock and scratch resistant as well as dust and waterproof to a somewhat reasonable degree.

Edge to edge, with plenty of screen in-between

The beauty of screens on smartphones is that after years and years of advancements, manufacturers have reached a point where the only physical limitations to the size of a display are the measurements of the handset's outer frame. This means that regardless of the composition be it LCD or LED, any display can be made to be as large or as small as the product allows.

As the more affordable iteration it's elder flagship model, the Nokia 8.3 5G was in need of a display that would still feel like flagship standard, while simultaneously being considerably more economical to produce. It was because of this train of thinking that the mystical minds at Nokia decided to utilize an IPS LCD as opposed to the more popular and expensive AMOLED display.

In the past LCDs often lost out to AMOLED displays due to a lack of vibrancy and color but as AMOLED displays were upgraded to Super AMOLED so too was the LCD upgraded to IPS LCD. Thanks to these advancements in screen technology the Nokia 8.3 5G's FullHD+ display packs enough colors to replicate the viewing experience offered by its rival AMOLED counterpart; with a color range of 16M colors, and inherently high brightness, this handset can output stunning visual media with intense accuracy in colors all while bathed in strong sunlight outside, or in the comfort of a consumer's home. As an extra precaution for the extremely bright display, users can activate a system-wide dark mode and toggle a blue light filter to reduce the adverse effects of a bright screen. The only possible issue buyers may have with this display, is the selfie hole-punch and the slight chin with Nokia branding, but considering the company's minimization efforts, these features can eventually be overlooked.

The mid-range microchip with next-gen connections

Though it was intended to be a more monetarily viable option as opposed to its premier flagship counterpart, the Nokia 8.3 5G is in and of itself, technically a flagship, albeit a middle-class tier flagship. Tech enthusiasts and avid smartphone users alike will agree that on paper, a phone can be called a flagship if its processor can still meet modern smartphone standards; with this in mind, a study by revealed the 30 best processors in the current market, unsurprisingly the Snapdragon 865 was the top android SoC, but much to the shock of the public the Nokia 8.3 5G's processor placed smack dab in the middle of the list, considering this study contained the fastest processors in the world a middle placement is by no means a small feat. This gives credence to the assertion that while cheaper, this handset's Snapdragon 765G processor is still among one of the best SoCs available. Furthering this idea is the fact that the Snapdragon 765G also utilizes the same 7nm manufacturing process as the Snapdragon 865.

For day to day applications, this chip will make mincemeat of simple calculations, multitasking, and general functions. In terms of gaming, the processor's ability to utilize a stable 5G connection should be proof enough that it can handle even the heaviest mobile games, but for the skeptical consumer, other smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 765G all showed considerable performance and there should be no reason why this particular handset would perform any differently.

Android 10 and Android One, a match made in tech. heaven

As far as third party smartphone manufacturers go, many products from these companies are plagued by a serious case of bloatware, this results from manufacturers attempting to utilize Android 10 software in conjunction with a custom user interface. Though this adds to the overall aesthetic it bogs down the software overall and causes certain processing issues. Well aware of this bloatware affliction Nokia designed its Android One user interface to work in conjunction with the already amazing Android 10. The resulting operating system is one that packs the functionality of a stock Android phone while also streamlining a user's experience with a simple, yet innovative, and easy-to-use interface. Additionally, unlike other operating systems which remain stagnant in terms of security, Android One is constantly tested and updated to ensure users are safe and well protected from third-party security breaches.

Accurate, precise, and made in collaboration with ZEISS

Onboard cameras can often have a serious effect on the reception of a mobile device; unwilling to repeat the grim reception of products long past, Nokia went the extra mile and enlisted the aid of the well-renowned camera lens manufacturer: ZEISS. As in the case of the Sony Xperia 1 MK. II smartphones that utilize ZEISS lenses can sometimes yield exceptional mobile cameras, hoping to replicate this success Nokia has also made use of ZEISS lenses, however, it is evident in the Nokia 9 Pureview, that the lenses are not always the source of a camera's quality.

One hopes that with the release of yet another ZEISS collaboration in the Nokia 8.3 5G, the previous issues that plagued the Pureview's camera software will no longer be a serious issue. Comprised of a 64MP wide lens, a 12MP ultrawide lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth camera, the comprehensive quad-camera assembly on this piece of kit may yet restore faith in Nokia's mobile cameras.

A thrifty device with an equally conservative battery

A previous issue with the Nokia 9 Pureview was lackluster battery life and mediocre charging times. Luckily, these issues seem to have been resolved with the release of the Nokia 8.3 5G, equipped with a very large 4500mAh lithium polymer battery, users can expect a considerable improvement in battery life compared to previous Nokia releases. As an added benefit of utilizing a specially made gaming SoC, the processor on this handset consumes a significantly smaller amount of power as compared to the previous generation of chips. Though actual times have yet to be released, users can expect a speedy charging time in conjunction with long battery life thanks to the device's 18W fast charging capabilities.

5G for a significantly lower fee

By far, the strongest selling point of the Nokia 8.3 5G is it's astounding 5G connection capabilities. For a selling price far cheaper than other 5G flagships, this smartphone enables users to enjoy all the freedom and unparalleled power that comes with such next-generation connections. Aside from 5G capabilities, this device is also equipped with 4G LTE, 3G, and 2G connections on all major channels. Despite its status as a mid-level flagship, the Nokia 8.3 5G's ability to utilize 5G connections makes it a phone that will stay relevant and practical long into the future when 5G becomes the global norm for mobile data connections.

Reliable, radical, and restless in the pursuit of innovation

Nokia is a company that has had considerable ups and downs in its history as a mobile phone maker. In the past, this company was a household name in mobile handsets, but today, the tables have turned and now this company must claw its way back from the brink of failure and desolation. With its recent efforts, this company has shown that it is willing to adapt to the times and innovate in terms of design, functionality, and capability. The release of the Nokia 8.3 5G is a testament to this manufacturer's ability to be both flexible and economical in the manufacturing of smartphones. Equipped with a commendable IPS LCD, as well as a considerably high-performing SoC and bleeding-edge connection capabilities this smartphone is well endowed to fulfill the promise delivered by its maker some years ago, a promise of "connecting people". For users in search of an affordable, all-around excellent phone, that will stay relevant for years to come, the Nokia 8.3 5G is a more than worthy consideration.
