MSI CX62 7QL: A Modest Gaming Notebook

This MSI laptop is identical to the GE62 gaming notebook series, but with a more pocket-friendly price tag.

Build and Design

MSI's entry-level CX62 7QL looks the same when compared to what was seen from the gaming laptop maker previously. The design is downright minimal but does not feature a red outline on the back. The MSI dragon branding is visible on the lid but does not backlight. The all brushed aluminum-like paint on the lid does a superb job of keeping the looks understated. At the same time, it makes the whole unit look more premium.

MSI kept the weight low at just 2.30 kilograms, this all thanks to the all-plastic build, which feels solid. The laptop has drivable flex both in the display in addition to on the keyboard deck. The bottom cover also has a small percentage of flex, but nothing major. It is removable to give users access to the HDD, SSD and the two DIMM RAM slots. It also spreads at 383 x 260 x 27 up to 29 millimeters.

When it comes to cooling technology, it is quite obvious that MSI has put some further effort with using copper heat pipes tasked on the job. The rear-mounted fan exhaust system also does a fantastic job.

Display and Configuration

While we do like the cooling and the internal space management of this laptop, the 15.6-inch display could be better. MSI has used an IPS panel / Wide-View which means that the viewing angles are good enough. Although you can also see a prominent color shift when viewing the display at an odd angle or when the contrast ratios low. As far as gaming is concerned the experience on this display is just fine.

The respectable thing about its connectivity is that you can always connect a better display externally. The laptop has not only one but two video-out ports, which is certainly impressive at its price tag. The laptop serves an HDMI out, a mini DisplayPort both supported by up to 4K @ 30fps resolutions. In addition to that, you get two standards a USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, one USB Type-C port, a DVD Super Multi drive, and an ethernet jack. Greatest of all, instead of a microphone headphone jack, you get ports dedicated for both. It will be nice especially if you are a gamer with a headset that has a separate cable for the headphones and the microphone.

The MSI CX62 7QL shines once you start gaming on it. Laced with the standard set of hardware - Intel Core i7 processor and the GeForce 940MX with 2GB DDR3, the laptop can tackle some AAA games with ease. While most games will run without any issues at 768p on low to medium settings at best, you can enjoy the game Bioshock Infinite at a higher graphics setting. The Rise of the Tomb Raider can become unplayable unless if on the lowest settings.

It is a cut-down version of the GE62. It only consists of just two heat pipes and a single system fan which produces some noise of about 32 dB(A). Thankfully that is low enough to be almost inaudible in typical office environments or when word processing.

Needless to say, that the laptop can take on day-to-day tasks easily with Windows 10 Home / Windows 10 Pro OS. Capacity-wise, an HDD + up to 1 x M.2 SATA SSD (optional for Intel C) or 1 HDD + up to 1 x M.2 SATA SSD (optional for Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors) is usable.

If you are purchasing this gaming laptop then be guaranteed that the battery life won't be any good. The 6-Cell Li-Ion 41Whr battery provides enough juice to get you through 3-4 hours of office work at 75 percent brightness but is not powerful enough to let you game on it. That being said, you can do some light gaming on the machine at very low settings in very limited time which will only last you for probably an hour top. When you charge, you get to use the 65W adapter.

If you have some money to spare, it is safe to say that it is better to get a more recent MSI offering than the MSI CX62 7QL. This gaming laptop cannot help with the demanding workloads and multi-tasking and multimedia streaming, most people need.
