Sports touring has gotten extra exciting with KYMCO's entry into the Philippines' growing maxi scooter segment, the KYMCO Xciting S 400i. Many maxi scoot enthusiasts who adored the widely successful KYMCO Xciting 400i for its agile handling and powerful but quiet engine would surely love the new Xciting S 400i more, as it is claimed to surpass the former in terms of performance and features.
Many Filipinos prefer scooters for the ease and comfort it brings, among many other reasons. But these machines are typically intended for city driving. With the Philippine highway-legal maxi scooters such as the KYMCO Xciting S 400i, riders will be able to enjoy a fun romp even outside the metro and a comfortable long-distance ride.
First introduced in the country in March last year at a racing bike festival, the Xciting S 400i was built with the Taiwanese motorcycle maker's "Win My Heart" philosophy in mind. The "breath-taking dynamic look," as KYMCO refers to it, takes on a modern and futuristic styling that inspires confidence even in first-time riders.
The middle-weight maxi scooter's uniquely designed front fascia boasts a tall, adjustable windscreen and a sporty-looking LED headlight unit that features the first ECE-approved daytime running light (DRL) for a scooter. This front lighting system intensifies the Xciting S 400i's aggressive appearance and greatly enhances visibility both during daytime and nighttime. Likewise, the LED taillight is distinct and full of character, and it complements the big bike's long tail and contoured seat with a backrest. The adequate cushioning plus the roomy, knee-friendly stepboard that allows for a feet-forward riding position spell rider comfort. This makes the KYMCO Xciting S 400i arguably the most comfortable maxi scooter to ride on the expressway.
The smooth and noiseless, yet mighty 400.1cc 4S 4-valve liquid-cooled SOHC engine delivers an impressive maximum output of 35.53hp at 7,500rpm and peak torque of 37.7Nm at 6,000rpm. This mill is mated to a CVT that distributes power smoothly regardless of the riding conditions. User reviews have it that the KYMCO Xciting S 400i is able to keep up with 800cc+ naked sportsbikes on speedways as long as the said sportsbikes do not run at racing speeds, of course.
Responsive acceleration is guaranteed in both slow urban traffic and during instant high-speed sprints on highways.
Fuel savings is also commendable, with user reviews estimating more or less PHP 500 for a week of daily home-to-school or home-to-work and vice versa commute, with occasional at least a couple of expressway runs.
Xciting Handling and Braking
The maxi scooter's hanger axle is strongly integrated between the frame and the engine, and its front telescopic fork and rear adjustable twin-shock suspension layout makes for increased rigidity. Small and less frequent bumps are not a problem, but larger potholes might cause a bit of bounce.
Stopping power is quite capable with the maxi scoot's Bosch dual disc brakes in front and single disc brake at the rear, with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) feature.
The KYMCO Xciting S 400i comes with the brand's newly developed Noodoe Navigation technology. The customizable Noodoe Navigation system is said to be the world's first rider-centric navigation, focusing on rider safety. It comes in the form of a smartphone app that connects to the scooter's digital display, which in turn provides the rider with visual turn-by-turn navigation cues. Clock and weather information are synced with the phone and the display's background image can be customized as well. Missed calls and messages on the rider's phone will only be displayed once the scooter comes to a full stop.
The Xciting S 400i's V-shaped handlebar provides better dashboard readability while riding. There are also a couple of power outlets to ensure uninterrupted connectivity in case the mobile phone runs out of juice. There's also a 12V car-charger-type socket and a USB port on the compartment area, which locks automatically when the scooter is locked.
Other notable features are an ignition shutter, a center stand, a hazard indicator and a handbrake for secure parking even on patchy grounds. KYMCO scooter fans wanting to go highway-legal could purchase the KYMCO Xciting S 400i for PHP 359,000.
