About Infinix HOT 8

Infinix Hot 8: A Buzz-Worthy Budget Phone?

The Hong-Kong based smartphone company has been making its rounds on different YouTube and Mobile phones Website for producing entry-level phones and medium-range phones for less. Infinix has already produced smartphones such as Zero 5, Zero 5 Pro, Hot S3, Hot 6 Pro, Smart 2, Smart 2 Pro, Note 5, Hot 6, S3X, Note 5 Stylus, Hot 6X, Smart 2 HD, Zero 6, Zero 6 Pro, Hot 7, Hot 7 Pro, S4, Smart3 Plus, Note 6, and then Hot 8.

Hot 8 was announced in September of 2019 and was released the same month. Many people were attracted to the smartphone for sporting a triple camera set-up and a notch design. It now retails in the Philippines for under PHP 7K or PHP 6,999, to be exact.

Infinix Hot 8 comes in a green box with an enormous image print of the actual unit with the lettering Infinix Hot 8 on the front side. Inside the box, you will be greeted by the device itself, the Infinix Hot 8. After that, there is a thin envelope that contains the customer service card, Infinix XClub app pamphlet, a free jelly case, Google Files flier, free screen protection, power block, USB 2.0 cable, and free headset. Even if the Infinix Hot 8 is a budget-level smartphone, the company still made an effort to freebies that up cannot even get on most flagship devices.

PROS of the Infinix Hot 8

  • It is affordable
  • There is a triple rear-camera setup
  • There is a dewdrop-notch display
  • There is QVGA (Low light sensor) available
  • There is Beauty Effect for a selfie camera

CONS of the Infinix Hot 8

  • It has a low-resolution display
  • There is no NFC feature
  • There is no OIS support and video stabilization
  • There is no fast charging
  • There are only two storage options

Design of Infinix Hot 8

The Infinix Hot 8 sports a current 20:9 aspect ratio display with an installed screen protector. On the right side, you will see the volume rocker and a power/lock button, which are made of plastic but still tactile and solid when pressed. On the chin/bottom of the phone, you get a slightly thick bezel without any logo or lettering. Below it, you will find the primary microphone, a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro USB 2.0 with USB OTG, and loudspeaker. Moving to the left side, you get a dual nano-sized SIM card tray. Not just that, it has a dedicated microSD card slot, so you do not have to sacrifice a SIM slot to expand your storage if you need some for your images and files. On the top, you will find the secondary microphone for noise cancellation. The back panel is made from glass material and does a good job of showing off a wonderful gradient effect. The phone is very well made as it merges seamlessly toward the surrounding frames though still prominent compared to high-end ones. Mostly made out of glass, it is quite heavy to bring and fiddle within one hand. It is also a smudge and fingerprint magnet, so better get a protective case. Sitting on the upper-left corner of the back panel is a triple camera module with the dual-LED flash sandwich between the second and third sensors. For the front area, it is also made with a glass display that is unspecified. The notch cutout houses the earpiece, some sensor, and the selfie snapper. The Infinix Hot 8 model comes in four color variants, which are namely Quetzal Cyan, Cosmic Purple, Shark Grey, and Midnight Black. All the colors are very unique to the Infinix brand with the Quetzal Cyan or Cosmic Purple color are much preferable if you like a pop of color. However, Shark Grey and Midnight Black are equally attractive color options. The only branding you can find from the phone is under the rear fingerprint sensor.

Display of Infinix Hot 8

The Infinix Hot 8 sports a 6.52-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. It has a rating of HD resolution with an actual resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, which is housed in a 20:9 aspect ratio. With that, the display reaped a pixel density of 269 ppi. Yes, does not have an impressive compact pixel count as pixels, but one can still enjoy videos and content on the device without any qualms. Irrespective of that, colors produced by its display are clad and pretty precise. Since it has IPS technology, viewing angles are anticipated to be bright and commendable for not having severe color shifts. It is also comprehensible enough when used outdoors. The display may not be the best, but considering the price of the device, Hot 8 is one of the good ones.

Performance of Infinix Hot 8

When it comes to the hardware performance of the device, the Infinix Hot 8 is powered by either a MediaTek MT6761 Helio A22 (12 nm) for the 32GB ROM or the MediaTek MT6762 Helio P22 (12 nm) for the 64GB ROM. Both have a quad-core Cortex-A53 clocked at 2.0 GHz and 1.80 GHz, respectively. It is paired with PowerVR GE8320 GPU for graphics processing. This CPU and GPU configuration is coupled either a 2GB of RAM or a 4GB RAM, which is good enough for the respective internal storage capacities. Playing games would be a problem for the device if its PUBG or Tekken, even if you put the game graphics setting on a low to medium set-up. You can play other games that are more on the lower frame rate. For its price tag, it can sure accomplish basic tasks like browsing the internet, texting, calling, FB, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. If the 332GB or 64GB eMMC 5.1 internal storage is not enough for your needs, you can expand it via microSD card.

Software of Infinix Hot 8

Regarding the software department, the Infinix Hot 8 runs on Android 9.0 (Pie). The Android 9.0 (Pie) is a has another UI platform partner with the XOS 5.0 Cheetah custom skin implemented on top of Android. The features of this custom skin exclusive to Infinix are brand new icons, AI Beauty for video chats, Intelligent Voice Notifications, Intelligent Notifications Management, Eye Care/ Ai Read Mode, Smart Photo Cleanup, Bike Mode, Smart Panel, Data Switcher, Privacy Protection, and Fingerprint Reset Password. These new features that are not found on the preceding XOS made a lot of Infinix users happy. One of the instant hits is brand-new icons. Since the device looks so good, it will be a shame to see the icons still looking old and outdated. Another hit is the Ai Beauty for video chats that makes the video chats much more fun and there is no need to put on makeup before chatting. For those Infinix users who ride on motorcycles, Riding Mode also comes in handy to avoid accidents and distractions. Want that bokeh effect or instant Insta-ready images? The Smart Photo Cleanup is the feature that will make that happen. Last but not the least on the new feature favorites is the Data Switcher for those who have two dual SIMs of different providers. It makes it easier to switch in a blink of an eye.

Camera of Infinix Hot 8

For mobile photography, the Infinix Hot 8 has a 13-megapixel plus 2-megapixel camera on the rear with Bokeh Effect, and Auto-focus support. It is further improved with the support of QVGA, PDAF Quad-LED flash, panorama, and HDR. The main sensor sports f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/3.1", 1.12µm. Yes, the device does have a dual-camera system, which is nice considering its affordable price with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. On the front-end, we have an 8-megapixel selfie snapper housed on the upper thick bezel. It has f/2.0aperture, LED flash, and a 25mm (wide) lens. The front camera only works like a camera, it cannot be used for face unlock, unfortunately. The cameras on the back and the front support video recording with 1080p@30 frames per second. The front and back sensors do not have OIS or video stabilization either. However, the shooters take decent and sharp photos with good colors and contrast when lighting is adequate. In addition, the front-facing camera has a beauty mode so you can post selfies without needing a third-party editor. If you feel like the images are too enhanced, you can always edit the settings.

Battery of Infinix Hot 8

One of the special things about the Infinix Hot 8 is the battery configuration as it is more than average battery capacity that you get for its price range. The device is packed with a non-removable Li-Po 5,000mAh battery that could last the whole day or up to two days depending on the usage. Using it on social media, it will definitely last until you get home from school or work and more. If you play games constantly and combine it with watching YouTube, then it will be dead in several hours. Unfortunately, the device does not have any fast charging feature. There is also no wireless charging.

Sensors of the Infinix Hot 8

Unfortunately for the Infinix Hot 8, there is one fingerprint sensor to unlock the device and there is no facial biometrics feature on the front camera. Of course, there are basic sensors for all smartphones, and Infinix Hot has some of them like the accelerometer, compass, and proximity sensor. No gyroscope though. Guess, you cannot get it all.

Network and Connectivity of Infinix Hot 8

Like many smartphones today, the Infinix Hot 8 also supports two nano-SIM cards with GSM, HSPA, and LTE networks. This means that you can have 2G, 3G, and 4G signals on the device. Its network bands are: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2 for the 2G network; HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100 for the 3G network; LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 8(900), 38(2600), 40(2300), 41(2500) for 4G network. The phone has a speed of HSPA 42.2/5.76 Mbps, LTE Cat4 150/50 Mbps. Connectivity-wise, the Infinix Hot 8 has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ and Wi-Fi Direct. There is Bluetooth version 5.0, A2DP, LE.GPS (Global Positioning System) is enabled with A-GPS. If you run out of music, there is FM radio installed and you can listen to it with the Dirac Surround Sound 3.5mm jack type. Regrettably, it offers the old-fashioned micro USB port for data transfer and charging, though it has USB On-The-Go connector. There is also no NFC availability for electronic transactions.

Comparing the Infinix Hot 8 to Infinix S5

The Infinix Hot 8 has some similarities with the Infinix S5, although Infinix didn't announce the devices at the same time. Are similarities too much between the two phones? Let's break it down. Well, if you check them out, the most notable difference goes to the huge leap in the front and back design. The Infinix S5 sports a glossy gradient back case, while the latter has more of the textured gradient effect. Aside from that, the Infinix Hot 8 has a smaller screen size than the Infinix S5 with a 6.52-inch display compared to the latter's 6.6-inch display. In terms of chipset used, the Infinix Hot 8 uses a Mediatek MT6761 Helio A22 with 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM, while the Infinix S5 uses Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM, which is double the change. Aside from the design, the major changes with both phones are the camera features. The Infinix Hot 8 has a dual rear camera, but the Infinix S5 has camera capacity with a triple rear setting. The same goes for the selfie snapper. Infinix Hot 8 also sports the same Android 9.0 Pie operating system with the Infinix S5, thus, serving the same user experience. Both do have offer 4G LTE networks, have the same display resolution and aspect ratio, and both have a dual SIM, dual stand-by slot. They also both share the same display type, same camera features, comms, and even sensors. Aside from some things mentioned earlier, the Infinix Hot 8 and Infinix S5 has also some differences. The selfie snapper is way better on the Infinix S5 with 32-megapixel, while the Infinix Hot 8 only has 8-megapixel. The placement of the cameras is also dissimilar. The Hot 8 has it placed in the notch, while the S5 has it in a punch-hole. That being said, Infinix Hot 8 aces the points for battery life because it has 1,000mAh more from the Infinix S5. It also has more color varieties than that of the S5. Infinix S5 only has Quetzal Cyan and Violet as color options, lacking the Cosmic Purple, Shark Grey, Midnight Black available for the Hot 8. Size-wise, Infinix Hot 8 is larger with 165 x 76.3 x 8.7 mm versus S5's 164 x 76 x 7.9 mm. For the weight, Infinix Hot 8 is just heavier by 1 gram, so that should not be an issue.

Conclusion

This Infinix Hot 8 is definitely hot and attention-grabbing because of its pricing and specifications. Even if it is a brand from Hong Kong, you can readily buy it through Lazada and Shopee, so shipment would not take long and you will feel more secured about ordering it. Another thing is that they have customer service and local Facebook and website pages if inquiries are necessary.
