About HUAWEI P40 Pro

HUAWEI P40 Pro, Elegant Form and Elite Function

When it comes to Man's basic urges, one can without a doubt, agree that humanity is programmed to seek out and achieve pleasure. In tandem with this, the Law of Diminishing Returns applied psychologically, states that when a person consumes or uses more and more of a specific product, they will derive less and less pleasure with each subsequent use or consumption. The law applies terribly well within the smartphone manufacturing market, and it is this diminishing return of pleasure which forces mobile handset manufacturers to create and innovate to maintain the interest of their consumer base. Fortunately, HUAWEI has had no trouble creating and discovering new ways to entertain and captivate smartphone users all around the world. For the competitive year of 2020, the China-based mobile phone maker has pulled out all the stops and spared no expense in the creation of their new flagship phone, the HUAWEI P40 Pro. One of three iterations of the P40, the P40 Pro is the middle man of the trio, but consumers would be hard-pressed to find any middle-class qualities in this phone as it is every bit the flagship fighter that HUAWEI advertised it to be.

Shipping with the phone, in-box is a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, a hard-plastic clear case, a 40W power brick, as well as a pair of USB-C wired earphones; much to the dismay of users, the P40 Pro is without a headphone jack, however, this is a small price to pay for the device's excellent overall performance.

Pros:

  • It has a stunning quad-lens camera
  • It supports HUAWEI's Supercharging
  • It also supports wireless charging
  • It can share battery charge with other devices
  • It is equipped with Kirin's latest and greatest SoC
  • Its display has a 90Hz refresh rate
  • Its 3 color variants are all wonderfully eye-catching

Cons:

  • It does not come equipped with a headphone jack
  • It does not support google services at present
  • The device is quite large and can be unwieldy for small hands
  • The device is also quite expensive

Curves for days

With most smartphones today, curved designs are a staple in high-end phones, the curves produce more screen area, create a sleeker ergonomic profile, and speak volumes of the manufacturer's ability to meet the flagship market standards. HUAWEI takes modern design standards and adds another aspect to the mix, where most phones have only curved sides, the P40 Pro has both curved sides and a curved top and bottom, this allows the phone to sit nicely in the user's hand for extended periods of time without causing fatigue or discomfort. Aesthetically the handset is beautifully unique and a true eye-catcher, pulling this device out in view others is sure to garner curiosity and pique interests; whether the user avails of the Blush Gold, Deep Sea Blue, Ice White, Black, or Silver Frost color variant, the reaction will always be the same, pure unadulterated aesthetic pleasure. In terms of durability, the P40 is as sturdy as most smartphones, with an aluminum side bezel sandwiched between two glass panels; of course, users should refrain from dropping the device however for the unavoidable mishap the phone is for the most part as prepared as any device can be.

With that said, a good clear case is certainly a worthy investment The rear panel is designed intuitively with the users having the option of a gloss or matte finish. The matte finish is obviously the smarter choice for users who want to avoid pesky fingerprints marring the beautiful finish on the device.

90Hz, not too slow, nor too fast, but just right

A good handset display is a telltale sign of a well-made piece of equipment. Many well-designed phones fall victim to poor display quality and this gives an overall cheap feeling to a smartphone regardless of that device's technical performance; such a flaw is understandable with an entry-level phone, OLED displays are typically very expensive and the use of such displays raises a handset's manufacturing costs considerably.

Thankfully, HUAWEI has spared no expense in the creation of the P40 Pro's display. Equipped with a 6.58in OLED screen with a uniquely high refresh rate, this flagship device stuns viewers and leaves them awestruck at the fluidity of its image display capabilities. To put things simply, seeing a 90Hz display is much like seeing a color one never knew existed, it is an exhilarating feeling and no lengthy verbal embellishments can ever do justice to the media viewing magnificence that is the P40 Pro's display. Pairing with the device's 90Hz refresh rate is a display resolution of 2640 x 1200 pixels this resolution falls just short of QuadHD but overall the quality and clarity of displayed media are still stunning, and the smooth and rich detail of each image is further enhanced by the P40 Pro's glass quad-curve design.

A mythic chip with commendable performance

The saying "all brawn and no brains" is not something a consumer wishes to hear when discussing the performance of a particular handset. Often times a smartphone can have all the technological bells and whistles available and still fall short of consumer expectations. A true flagship handset should have the latest and greatest hardware and the processing power to utilize it too. In the case of the P40 Pro, the phone has plenty of brawn and a ton of brains, borrowing from its predecessor the P30, the creative minds at HUAWEI utilized the same SoC for the P40 Pro, believing firmly in the capabilities of Kirin's 990 5G SoC. For the most part, the developers were correct in their beliefs since the phone performs magnificently providing silky smooth transitions and easily handling the processing load put out by all the hardware mounted on the handset, this is no surprise as the 8GB of RAM are more than enough for this phone's requirements.

Mobile gamers will be pleased to know that the chip on this device handles most mobile games easily, allowing for fun-filled play with little to no latency, there are a few issues that arise when playing 3-D intensive games such as PUBG and Fortnite, but these were mainly restricted to slight frame drops which did not affect gameplay in any significant way. The frame drops have been attributed to the SoC's GPU as it is rather old having been utilized in the P40's predecessor. Nevertheless, this piece of equipment can still handle any daily tasks the user requires be it media viewing, data processing, or immersive mobile gameplay and consumers will find few if any flaws in this smartphone's top of the line processor.

17 Modes, 4 lenses, one legendary camera

Every brand in the mobile handset market has a particular niche in which they excel in, Apple specializes in delivering high-tier user-friendly phones with excellent performance, while Samsung creates and integrates the latest market innovations into high-utility Android devices. HUAWEI's P series smartphone is particularly known for its excellent all-around performance, beautiful aesthetics and most importantly its camera.

Just like its previous iteration, the P40 Pro has the privilege of boasting one of the best mobile handset cameras in the market; the camera is so well made that many reviewers have dubbed it the best camera on any smartphone to date. The P40 Pro's monster camera is actually a quad lens camera array consisting of a 50MP "Ultra Vision" main camera, a 40 MP Ultrawide camera, a 12MP SuperSensing Telephoto lens, and a 3D Depth-sensing camera. The camera software has five basic modes: night, portrait, photo, video, and pro. Additionally there exist 12 extra modes catered to a specific situation to make sure the user always gets the perfect shot. All of these shooting modes perform wonderfully and their usefulness cannot be understated but the night mode is particularly praise-worthy, night shots with the P40 Pro are easy to take and mind-blowingly crisp and clear, even low light shots with Samsung's Galaxy S20 pale in comparison to the brilliance of the P40 Pro's camera. Aiding the user in utilizing all of the various modes and lenses is HUAWEI's camera AI which can do everything from editing and enhancing photos to removing reflections and photo bombers at the push of a button.

Android 10 with a user-friendly twist

In typical HUAWEI fashion, the P40 Pro runs Android 10 a wise decision since Android 10 is a tried and tested software. Ever the innovators, the designers at HUAWEI went one step further and gave their Android 10 software a complete makeover endowing the P40 Pro with a user interface that is just as beautiful and elegant as the phone itself.

Running over the base Android 10 software is EMUI 10.1 and if there's anything unique about this user interface it is the fluidity and almost watery smoothness of transitions from one screen to another, this is due in large part to the 90Hz display which HUAWEI did well to keep in mind whilst designing the user interface. Despite being very well dressed and aesthetically pleasing there exist a true dealbreaker in the P40 Pro's software, like many of HUAWEI's phones, the P40 Pro does not support google services, this means the lack of apps which would otherwise be common to smartphones, apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and many others. Luckily, there exist a number of workarounds and alternatives to the apps many consumers have come to know and love. For users coming from an android phone, the use of a phone cloner allows the complete movement of all the precious entertainment and social media apps that the user needs from their previous phone. Additionally, if HUAWEI's AppGallery is lacking the user can install the Amazon app store to download any other apps one might need. With such workarounds, the P40 Pro's dealbreaker can seem like less of a dealbreaker and more like an extended startup, all the better to familiarize one's self with the device.

Two days? Easy

Any avid HUAWEI consumer knows that a flagship phone from the Chinese based company can easily satisfy the one-day charge requirements expected of any upper-tier smartphones. The P40 Pro is no different from past flagship models, with regular use, the smartphone lasts two days, and even with heavy use, the phone can still manage a relatively long period of performance. Putting this to the test some reviewers used switched the handset to its full display resolution, activated the 90Hz refresh rate and raised the screen to maximum brightness. These reviewers then proceeded to play 3D intensive mobile games and managed a whopping seven hours of screen time despite the phone performing at maximum capacity. Such a feat demonstrates the smartphone's unreal battery life and the efficiency of its power management AI as well as the efficiency of the onboard SoC's power allocation system. As an added benefit of the device's gargantuan battery, the P40 Pro can also share charge wirelessly to other devices, and should the user ever drain the battery, the phone takes only a measly 74 minutes to reach full charge. All of these capabilities ensure that consumers can charge quickly and drop their worries because the P40 Pro has the power to spare for any occasion.

Global connection for modern communication

Where most phones will support up to 4G LTE connection this flagship device goes the extra mile by introducing 5G connection; and as if having 5G capability was not enough, the designers equipped their device with not one, but two sim slots. The primary sim supports 5G NR, 4G FDD LTE, 4G TDD LTE, 3G WCDMA, and 2G GSM on all major bands, the secondary sim supports all the same connections with the exception of 5G NR. In the case of WiFi connections, the P40 Pro has been optimized to send and receive high-frequency signals which penetrate walls and floors easier allowing the user to stay connected regardless of where they may be.

A flagship contender for the modern market

Very rarely does a device perform so well in so many categories while presenting little to no flaws. The P40 Pro does have a few hiccups when running 3D intensive mobile games, however, these can easily be overlooked when the user witnesses the magnificence and fluidity of the device's 90Hz display. Whether the buyer is an avid tech enthusiast in search of the latest and greatest mobile device, an everyday layman looking for a phone that gets the job done, or someone in between the two, the P40 Pro is a worthy candidate for any person as consumers can be certain that no matter what is required of it, this piece of equipment will perform magnificently.
