About HUAWEI Mate 30

HUAWEI Mate 30: HUAWEI's Answer to the 2020 Smartphone Dilemma

When a consumer thinks of a smartphone, 20 years ago that consumer would have thought of a blackberry; today, however, the choice is not so simple, there are multiple names that come to mind, and three names in particular that undeniably dominate the mobile phone industry: Samsung, Apple, and last but not least, HUAWEI. With the vision to "enrich life through communication", HUAWEI has made quite a name for itself in recent years.

The company's recent endeavors have pitted them against many notable manufacturers and they have more than held their own. For the upcoming 2020 smartphone slugfest, HUAWEI has released the Mate 30, the next iteration in their 2nd flagship line. Despite the existence of the "Mate 30 Pro", a model with a slightly upgraded camera, the "Mate 30" is still a formidable piece of equipment in its own right, and with the amount of technology integrated into this model, this is one device that truly packs a punch. The device comes in a standard black box reminiscent of most smartphone packaging. Upon opening the box, the buyer is greeted by the phone itself wrapped in a protective plastic sleeve. Lifting the phone and placeholder one finds an envelope containing a clear case, the sim ejector, the manual, and a warranty card. At the very bottom of the box lies a 40W HUAWEI supercharge charger, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and a pair of headphones. Though the box contains the usual accessories for a smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate 30 is anything but ordinary.

Pros:

  • USB-C port allows for ultra-fast charging
  • Night Photos are stunningly crisp and clear
  • It has onboard AI which enhances photos
  • It has a headphone jack, allowing wired and wireless audio
  • It uses HUAWEI's cutting edge Kirin 990 series microchip
  • It can handle heavy processing loads easily without lag
  • Its battery can easily last all-day despite heavy use
  • Gaming is a delight with stunning graphics and seamless frames

Cons:

  • It cannot utilize 5G networks
  • It is splash-proof, not waterproof
  • Its camera is not as advanced as the Mate 30 Pro
  • Standard storage is smaller than the Mate 30 Pro
  • Alternate software is required to run Google Services
  • External memory card is required for further storage capacity

Designed with form and function:

Upon handling the device, one can say the design of the Mate 30 is relatively ergonomic, it retains physical volume up and down buttons which regulate the volume from the earpiece speaker just below the selfie camera and the main speaker on the bottom of the phone, also embedded in its side is the red-tinted lock screen button reminiscent of all of HUAWEI's flagship phones. The body of the device is not so large that it would be unwieldy and not so small that it would sacrifice any function for the sake of form. At 160.8mm tall, 76.1mm wide and 8.4mm thick, it's just a half-inch taller than Apple's iPhone 11 and relatively the same in thickness and width. With a weight of 196g or 7oz, the Mate 30 feels present and solid in the hand but not weightless, an important feature considering its applications for photography and mobile gaming. Unlike the Mate 30 Pro, this device retains rounded edges and a generally curvy outline much like a classic car, turning the phone face down the consumer is greeted by an aluminum back covered in glass with a distinct halo encompassing the device's impressive camera array. Overall the smooth, sleek design of this piece of technology lends to its aesthetically pleasing nature, the fact that it retains a headphone jack is a point of controversy for some but for others, it is the icing on an otherwise well designed technological cake.

Vivid colors:

With an exterior that could scratch any buyer's aesthetic itch, HUAWEI designed the display on the Mate 30 to also be a true pleasure to look at; the 107.6㎠ of viewing area and 87.9% screen-to-body ratio boosted by the phone ensure there is plenty to see, with the capacity to display 16.7 million colors, every image is grounded in colorful reality. In terms of screen resolution, most flagship smartphones have resolutions around 2560x1440 pixels, but unfortunately, the Mate 30's resolution is listed at 2340x1080 pixels, still, full HD albeit certainly lower compared to other smartphone brands. Nevertheless, Games and Videos are still rendered in amazing color and great depth, as such, any user would definitely be impressed with the vivid imagery the screen can display. What the phone lacks in resolution, it more than makes up for in touch reception. An OLED capacitive touch screen ensures every gesture made on the screen is greeted with seamless screen input, effectively eliminating micro stutters and shakey screen movement and creating fluid touch response. As far as flagship displays go, this particular display is no slouch, it makes up for lacking in certain aspects by being outstanding in others and its color depth ensures wonderful visibility outdoors and even in harsh sunlight.

Beastly performance:

As beautiful as the Mate 30 is, its beauty and aesthetic allure mean nothing if it fails to perform as expected of a flagship phone from a company such as HUAWEI. Luckily, the true wonder of this electronic marvel lies deep within, housed in the device's intricate internals, is the current culmination of HUAWEI's efforts to build a brain for its smartphones. A brain that can easily process relatively large amounts of data without stalling. This brain is none other than the Kirin 990 chipset, Kirin in Chinese folklore is a great mythical beast, and that is precisely what this technological feat is. With a Mali-G76 MP16 GPU, 128GB of UFS 3.0 storage, and 8GB of RAM, the Mate 30 delivers upper-tier processing power.

Mobile games such as FRAG 2020, Mobile Legends, Rules of Survival, and Call of duty, run smoothly and effectively. The scores put up by this chip do well to cement these claims: AnTuTu v8 - 375,209 / 3D Mark SSE - 5,662 (OpenGL ES 3.1), 3,014 (Vulkan) / PC Mark - 8,647 (Work 2.0) / Geekbench - 752 (Single-Core), 2,761 (Multi-Core), 3,705 (OpenCL) / AndroBench - 1,467.7 MB/s (Seq. Read), 231.69 MB/s (Seq. Write). When it comes to the question of performance, there can be no doubt, the HUAWEI Mate 30's SoC truly delivers.

User-friendly software:

This modern communication device runs the OS, EMUI 10, an operating system based largely on Samsung's own excellent, Android 10 software. This software stems from improvements on its predecessor, EMUI 9, most of which focus largely on the user interface making it more streamlined and easier to use. The idea of these improvements was to make the phone as user-friendly as possible whilst still retaining a comprehensive amount of advanced functionality. Dubbed "magazine-style" the design of the Mate 30's UI organizes the screen to look much like a magazine, it parts the screen content in areas including the headline, white space, and grid system, always ensuring a simple yet informative interface. Unlike most Android phones, the Mate 30 does not support google services from the factory setting. This can be troublesome for consumers in areas outside of China.

Hence, if one wishes to use the google play store to download apps outside of HUAWEI's app gallery, then the use of third-party software is required. Whether this device is truly worth the extra work to make it usable in other countries depends entirely on the consumer. Fortunately, for people who still wish to use this device, this third-party software is free and the internet provides many alternatives to enable Google services on this device.

Three is better than one:

There can be no mistake, when it comes to modern smartphones, the camera can easily make or break the product. With this in mind, HUAWEI made the right call when they utilized material for their camera from a company called Leica. Leica has been making cameras since 1869, and their partnership with HUAWEI has aided the company in integrating top of the line optics in their devices. However, the camera of the Mate 30 doesn't owe all of its quality to its lense, the phone's camera AI also adjusts the lens modules and regulates exposure, shutter speed, and other settings helping to capture images in stunning detail, the specs of its triple camera module speak well for itself: with a 40MP, f/1.8, 27mm wide lens, as well as, 8 MP, f/2.4, 80mm telephoto lens, and a 16 MP, 17mm ultrawide lens. The Telephoto lens incorporates a 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and crisp 30x digital zoom, making sure no view is out of sight, while the 16MP Ultrawide camera captures a ridiculous field of view compared to other smartphones. Most stunning of all is the 40MP Supersensing camera, this particular camera is what gives this device its edge over other competition especially with challenging night photos. The night mode on the Mate 30 is one of if not the most advanced in the market, putting even Apple and Samsung to shame in certain aspects. If there is one feature to truly commend on this device it is without a doubt the Triple Camera Module.

Charge, and chase the day:

Many manufacturers claim their phones carry enough charge to get through the day, but so few of these claims actually ring true. The Mate 30 on the other hand, makes well and good on this claim with a Li-Po 4200mAh battery making sure it's ready and running at any point in the day.

This one charge-a-day capability stems from the device's highly intelligent power saving and management system run by its Kirin 990 chip. Also, the Kirin 990 uses far less power than its predecessor, this lower power requirement for the SoC means more power to the product's other systems, these two factors effectively extend the battery life. With continuous use, such as video playback the phone clocked an impressive 21 hours of playback; and with conservative use, the battery can last for almost 2 days. On the off chance, the user forgets to charge or drains the battery by playing one too many matches on an online game such as PUBG, the device comes prepared with ultrafast charging courtesy of its USB-C charging port. When tested, users found the battery could charge to 70% in less than 30 minutes, useful for the people nowadays who are always on the go. Having long battery life, and ludicrously fast charging the Mate 30 goes above and beyond its market requirements.

Capable connections:

Despite having the same chipset as the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro, the Mate 30 is not optimized for 5G networks, this is due to the fact that the 5G network is reserved for the more advanced Mate model. Nevertheless, this device can support connections from 4G LTE to 2G, this will allow the user to stay connected wherever they may roam. The location services function with dual-band A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO, and QZSS. As for Bluetooth, the device utilizes Bluetooth 5.1 the latest iteration in device connection. For sensors, the phone is packed with them, everything from Face ID, fingerprint (under display, optical), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, barometer, and compass. Among all other flagship smartphones, HUAWEI's device boasts one of, if not the fastest, touch Id recognition; perfect for occasions when one needs to open their device and capture a timeless moment with a photo.

Mid-level price, high-level power:

With all its technological bells and whistles, the Mate 30 overall is an excellent piece of equipment. The lack of Google services is a discouraging flaw for some users, but this poses little concern for the adamant HUAWEI consumer. Like all products, the selling point of this device is largely based on its price, and with a moderate price tag compared to other smartphones in the same flagship category, the Mate 30 is an economic alternative to more expensive devices. It surrenders little to its competitors and even trumps many in terms of processing capability thanks to its SoC, it also beats out many alternatives when it comes to camera quality, the Leica triple camera module is beautiful as are the photos it captures, for the consumer looking for high-end performance at a mid-level price the HUAWEI Mate 30 is an excellent choice.
