Chery Makes a PH Market Comeback with a 2020 Tiggo SUV Line-up
China-brand Chery makes its fourth attempt to permeate the Philippine market with the FOTON-distributor UAAGI at the helm of its marketing and sales. With much-improved specs and competitive pricing, the brand hopes to succeed this time in its venture into the local automotive industry.
The distributor-manufacturer of the Chinese brand FOTON, United Asia Automotive Group Inc. (UAAGI) signed a deal back in October to carry another Chinese brand in the Philippines. UAAGI President Rommel Sytin and Chery International President Zhang Guibing partnered to bring Chery vehicles anew to the country, making this the brand's fourth try to penetrate the local market.
Zhang puts a lot of confidence in UAAGI's ability to market Chery products banking on the distributor's "vast experience in marketing and after-sales service, as well as a deep insight into consumer concerns."
Indeed UAAGI did not waste any time promoting the Chery line-up and has been proactive in its marketing strategy, even running full-page ads in leading newspapers and promoting the brand on its social media channel. According to Sytin, they are "convinced that Chery now has the right blend of design, features, technology, and pricing in its product line to make a strong impact on the Philippine market".
The line-up consists of four 2020-model SUVs: the 5-seater 2020 Chery Tiggo 2, Tiggo 5X and Tiggo 7, and the 7-seater Tiggo 8, all housing a 1.5L 4-cylinder inline-4 fuel-injected DOHC gasoline engine, but with different power capabilities and with the Tiggo 7 and 8 being turbocharged. The Tiggo 2 and 5X are mated to a 5-speed MT, AT or CVT, while the Tiggo 7 and 8 are paired with a 6-speed AT.
The subcompact Tiggo 2 is the smallest of these crossover family with its engine able to churn out power of 106hp and torque of 135Nm. The Tiggo 5X mill can pump 114hp and 141Nm of torque, while the Tiggo 7 and 8 engines can each produce max power of 145hp and torque of 210Nm.
There are two trims, one MT and one AT, for the Tiggo 2, while the Tiggo 5X comes in MT, CVT and top-range CVT variants. The Tiggo 7 has only one AT variant, while the Tiggo 8 has two high-end trims, both AT, the Luxury and the Luxury EX.
All four Tiggo SUVs sport a modern elegant design that can compete with luxury brands. Staple features are LED headlights with daytime running lights and taillights, an Apple- and Android-compatible infotainment system, and standard safety features such as stability control, traction control, hill assist, and emergency brake assist.
It remains to be seen how the new Chery SUVs will fare in the local market, but with the impressive specs and the competitive pricing detailed below there seems to be much potential for a breakthrough. There's also a 5-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and other perks that come with the purchase of these Chery offerings.
