About Black Shark 3

The Black Shark 3, Dauntlessly Devouring The Competition

When it comes to the ludicrously vast economic system that is the smartphone market, manufacturers must strive day after day to differentiate themselves from the crowd of ordinary devices and products. Some smartphone makers manage this challenging task by creating phones that trump competitor brands in every conceivable way. For lesser-known companies, however, this task is managed by adopting a particular niche and dominating a specific area of the mobile handset market. This, like all tasks in the smartphone world, is often easier said than done, but for a company such as Black Shark, taking a bite out of the competition is business as usual. With a focus on creating next-generation gaming handsets, and cutting edge entertainment software, this company has made a name for itself by churning out elite gaming smartphones which best even the greatest flagships and allow for an unparalleled entertainment experience comparable to that of gaming consoles, all while selling for an affordable, budget-friendly price point. Stirring the waters of the handset market for the year 2020 is the Black Shark 3, this device is the lower iteration of Blackshark's 2020 flagship, but consumers would do well to respect the power, and hardware packed by this beast of a device. Despite playing second fiddle to the Black Shark 3 Pro, the Black Shark 3 is well equipped to provide a unique user's experience, boasting 5G connection, a 90Hz screen refresh rate, the latest Snapdragon SoC, and a bevy of other features this is one device that is sure to make waves. Shipping with this phone in-box is a 65W power adapter, a USB-A to USB-C cable, as well as a sim ejector, and a flexible protective case. Additional accessories may be purchased including headphones, a magnetic charger, as well as a standalone cooling unit, to create a mobile gaming platform like no other.

Pros of the Black Shark 3

  • Extremely fast charging capability
  • Massive 4720mAh battery
  • 90Hz screen refresh rate
  • 5G connection capability
  • Equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Has an AMOLED FHD+ display
  • Sports Snapdragon 865, the fastest 5G SoC
  • The display is very large at 6.67in
  • Black Shark manufacturers many supplementary accessories

Cons of the Black Shark 3

  • For smaller hands, the large device may be unwieldy
  • The large camera bump is susceptible to fingerprints
  • Hi-resolution photos from the main cam can use large amounts of storage
  • There is no MicroSD storage expansion

Idle Hands Made Busy by Design

For many phones, the general design is a selling point that is well thought out and made to incorporate ergonomics as well as aesthetics. The Black Shark 3 has both of these features in spades along with the additional benefit of being designed with mobile gaming as its main function. First impressions last and the first impression made by this device is one of awesome, tantalizing, and almost, Alienware-like appearance. The similarity to gaming hardware is uncanny and yet understandable as this phone was designed to be held much like a controller. Symmetrical from edge to edge, the enlarged triangular camera bump is mirrored by an identical triangular charging bump used to connect to a magnetic charger, as for the sides, both are equipped with a trapezoidal cut-out, to allow for an equally comfortable upright grip. As per typical gaming ware aesthetics, the handset has a rear Black Shark logo that illuminates when the phone is working heavily or flipped display down, users can customize the backlight logo setting to their heart's content or switch it off altogether to help save power. Buyers have the choice to opt for the handset's lightning black, armor gray, or star silver color variant, this can be a tough choice because, regardless of the color this piece of kit will not fail to scratch any consumer's aesthetic itch, whether they are an avid mobile gamer or an everyday smartphone user. With a glass panel and metal frame construction, the Black Shark 3 is as sturdy as a handset can be and the included case from the manufacturer does well to give extra peace of mind to the user. Weighing in at 222g this device is a bit on the hefty side, but this weight allows the Black Shark 3, to sit comfortably in the hand while feeling solid with a high-quality fit and finish.

Adaptive and Adept for Entertainment

With a marketing campaign that touts it as the latest and greatest piece of kit in mobile gaming, the Black Shark 3 has some rather large technological shoes to fill. Thankfully, this device packs more than enough hardware to back up such claims. One of the most significant pieces of hardware on this smartphone is its display. Sporting a 6.67in, AMOLED display, with a color range of 16 million colors, a refresh rate of 90Hz, and a peak HDR+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, the Black Shark 3 has the specs to walk the walk and talk the talk. It's no surprise that mobile gaming is an absolute delight on this handset, gamers could spend hours upon hours tapping away and marveling at the vibrant colors and sharp clarity of graphics produced by the screen.

With the very enticing possibility of binge-gaming on this phone, certain health risks may arise with regard to the user's eyes. Luckily the big brains at Black Shark also kept this in mind and endowed their handset with Trueview Display capability which automatically adjusts the brightness and color temperature of the screen to match the user's surrounding lighting conditions. With a peak brightness of 500nits, the Trueview display will have no problem adapting to heavy outdoor lighting conditions so consumers can enjoy all the joys of gaming and media consumption no matter where they choose to do so. Supplementing the excellent display is a pair of front-facing loudspeakers that blast sound effects and media audio at equally high volumes, this allows users to use their phone in the upright, or sideways orientation without worrying about covering the speakers and muffling audio. Taking these features together, the Black Shark 3's display provides an immersive media consumption experience unlike any other.

A Beast with Powerful Processing Capability

Engineering a phone for mobile gaming is a task that presents unique challenges, chief among such challenges is providing a processor with enough power to run even the heaviest mobile games without so much as breaking a sweat. Fortunately for the manufacturers at Black Shark, it was obvious there was only one chip that could hope to rise to the technological challenge. Housed within the Black Shark 3's distinct body is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. This miniature miracle chip is tasked with handling any and all computations required by Black Shark's premier gaming smartphone. Much like the predator, it was named after, this piece of kit is both fast and intelligent with the 12GB RAM version sporting 256GB of SSD storage, as well as an LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.0 flash storage. All of these specs translate to faster rendering, little to no latency, lightning-fast app switching, as well as a multitude of multitasking capabilities.

Whilst running the device on its highest performance setting the phone yields an Antutu score of 562122, besting almost 90% of the competition. Utilizing the phone's high-performance capability by enabling "Ludicrous Mode" does not come without risk, oftentimes the handset may heat up due to the serious work being done by the processor. However, this risk is mitigated by Black Shark 3's "Sandwich Cooling System", essentially this system sandwiches the phone's heat-generating components between two copper-coated liquid cooling pipes which are stated to double the cooling efficiency of the device to allow for more gaming with less SoC strain.

Android 10, Repurposed for the Utmost Joy

Google's Android 10 software is well known for its excellent overall performance and applications. Additionally, the software has a rich history and is the result of years upon years of development and innovation, with such accomplishments and pedigree it's easy to see why this is the software of choice for many flagship smartphones. Black Shark could easily have applied a vanilla Android 10 software to run their monster setup, however, such a decision would leave consumers wanting more gaming-oriented software. In a bid to appease their sizeable mobile gaming consumer market, whilst still maintaining the functionality sought by regular users, the software engineers at Black Shark opted to add a twist to their Android 10 software dubbing this new amalgamation, JOYUI 11. This new gaming-oriented version of Android 10 hosts a number of additions including shark space, which is enabled by flipping a switch on the phone's lower right corner. Shark space enables high performance "Ludicrous Mode" as well as Gamer studio, wifi screen-casting, built-in screen recording, and a number of other useful gaming tools. Such modes are a godsend for mobile content creators and this particular piece comes with all the technological bells and whistles necessary to make great content and share it with others.

13K Shots

As if the plethora of gaming features was not enough, the makers of this magnificent device went the extra mile and gave their flagship phone a flagship camera set up. Contrary to popular belief the number of cameras on a phone is not always proportional to the quality of photos. In the case of the Blackshark, the highest quality photos can have a ridiculous resolution of 13824 x 18432 pixels. This high number of pixels is managed with only 3 cameras, consisting of a 64MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP depth camera. For all its worth the 13K shots from this camera setup are sometimes a nightmare especially for the 128GB version of the Black Shark 3 as these photos can have sizes of roughly 100MB. Thankfully though, such issues can be remedied with future software updates, and what is at the moment a hindrance, can become a truly amazing feature in the future.

A Power Supply Fit for a Gamer

Providing power for every innovative piece of hardware on this smartphone is a plentiful 4720mAh battery, what sets this handset's battery apart from the competition is that while most flagship smartphones use a single massive battery, the Black Shark 3 utilizes a revolutionary dual battery system composed of two smaller parallel 2360mAh batteries, this setup allows for more efficient use of space while maintaining a very large battery capacity. Upon testing, the Black Shark 3 put out a screen on time of 7hrs, and 8min this is impressive considering this test was conducted whilst playing mobile games nonstop using maximum brightness, full resolution, and the highest refresh rate. Another benefit of the dual battery setup is astonishingly fast charging capability by utilizing series charging, both batteries can be charged fully by the 65W power adapter in a stunning 38 minutes; in terms of power efficiency, the parallel discharging utilized by the dual batteries allows for longer power output. These features allow the Black Shark 3 to operate at maximum capacity for extended periods of time with less than an hour of downtime for charging.

Fast Both Inside and Out

In every generation of smartphones there a defining innovation that the entire market strives to integrate into their latest products, for the latter generations, one such innovation was biometric security, and facial recognition; but for the year 2020, the name of the smartphone game is 5G. Black Shark has wisely chosen to play this game by enabling this device to utilize 5G connections, in hindsight this is a wise decision as a gaming phone requires the highest connection speeds to mitigate latency and lag during online games. Aside from 5G, the Black Shark 3 also supports 4G LTE, 3G, and 2G on all major channels, it should be noted that some concerns arose amongst tech reviewers with regard to the strength of the device's 5G connection, but like all things, such an issue is most likely to be remedied in the future with updates.

Taking a Big Bite of the Market

As far as smartphones go, the Black Shark 3 is on par with many high-end flagship models, it has the fastest processor mounted on any Android smartphone to date, as well as a camera and Battery economy that puts many other flagships to shame. As if this was not enough, the designers of this piece of kit went so far as to craft it with mobile gaming at its core inadvertently creating what is in a sense a handheld console that makes calls, takes excellent photos, and allows users to surf the web at 5G speeds. As an everyday phone, the Black Shark 3 functions equally well, and any buyer in search of a high-end flagship phone or a cutting-edge mobile gaming platform would do well to keep this handset at the top of their watch list.
