Lenovo, a Chinese multinational tech company, is considered to be another formidable mobile phone brand. Although it is more popular for their personal computer range being named as the 2nd largest PC vendor in the world in 2012, Lenovo is quickly making a name for itself when it comes to smartphones and tablets.
Its name can be roughly translated into “new creativity” which is definitely appropriate when you check out their collection of mobile devices. In 2008, Lenovo sold their smartphone and tablet division for around $100 million but bought it back in 2009 for double the amount it paid. It remains to be among the top mobile brand in China in terms of number of units. In fact, it is the largest vendor of smartphones in Mainland China as of 2012. As of January 2013, Lenovo has decided to manufacture smartphones that run on Android operating system. Currently, its main competitor in Mainland China is Samsung.
Popularity in the Philippines
With the Filipinos embracing everything hi-tech, Lenovo is fast enjoying a following among the locals for their affordable yet powerful smartphone range. The company introduced 4 series, the A, K, S and P series. The devices under the A series are the popular choice because of their relatively cheaper prices. Handset unit cost range between PhP2 799 and PhP9 999 and varies in design and features.
The most affordable unit, the Lenovo A269i, is perfect as a starter smartphone especially with its Dual SIM feature. It is a touchscreen phone with 3.5 inch display and runs on Android Gingerbread operating system. It is packed with Google applications including Gmail, Google+, Maps and Music. It also has a Play Store for downloading other apps. It even has a microSD card slot for expanding its 512MB internal storage memory. The entire A series collection is geared toward the younger market and Lenovo boasts that its collection is more usable and has faster response than other brands players in the entry level smart phone arena.
On the other hand, the K900 model, is dubbed as “the game changer” with its 5.5 inch Full HD 1080p touchscreen display, Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and 2.0ghz dual core Intel Atom processor. It also boasts of a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. The mobile device runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1 and a built in 2500 mAh battery capacity. It comes with 4.68GB + 9.77GB storage card with no microSD card slot support and is sold at about PhP20 999. The many options to choose from is certainly a plus for the practical Filipino, especially those who are looking to get the most value for their money.
Official Stores in the Philippines
Lenovo smartphones are sold side by side with other brands by most mobile retailers located all over the country. They are even sold over the internet, with most Filipinos preferring online retailers for their cheaper prices. A list of official distributors, Lenovo Exclusive Stores, can be found on the Lenovo.ph website and includes major shopping malls such as SM Mega Mall and Robinson’s Ermita as well as top retailers like PC Express. You can also check out the list of Lenovo Corporate Resellers and Premier Storefront on the same website.
According to local business news report, overall sale of smartphones in the Philippines is seen to reach approximately 3.6 million units by the end of 2013. Of this, Lenovo is hoping for a double digit market share. The company is relying on its four screen strategy which includes PC, tablet, smartphones and smart television markets, hoping to dominate the PC technology industry this way. Lenovo also believes that the personal computer is simply evolving with tablets, smartphones and smart TVs as testament to this belief. Innovation is actually the key and the company is working hard to come up with better and smarter products. For the first quarter of 2013, Lenovo’s sold 12.9 million units globally of their tablets and smartphones. The said figure actually exceeded the 12.6 million PC sales.
