Started as an electronics shop in Tokyo by Masaru Ibuka in 1946, Sony worked with 8 employees and a $530 capital. A year later and together with colleague Akio Morita, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo was founded and built Japan’s first tape recorder, the Type G.
At the start of the 1950s, Ibuka manages to convince Bell Labs to license its transistor technology, giving birth to the first commercially successful transistor radios. The company changed its name to Sony in 1858 and easily infiltrated the US market, selling 5 million portable transistor radios by 1968.
In 1960, the company founder Sony Corporation of America. The decision to do so was unheard of but opened up the Japanese to plenty of export opportunities. This reputation as a powerful exporter was given further boost by the fact that Sony products were known for its excellent quality. The company was able to sell their merchandise at above market prices and resisted the lure of low prices. In 1979, it introduced the Walkman brand, which is the world‘s first portable music player that uses the compact cassette format.
The company continued diversifying its portfolio and developed innovative products such as Compact Disc and PlayStation. Eventually, it purchased CBS Records (1988) and Columbia Pictures (1989), which helped expand the company’s media presence.
Although a lot of analyst predicted the company’s downfall especially during the 1980s global recession, Sony managed to overcome all obstacles by pursuing convergence. The 2000s were filled with ups and downs for the company but it focused on increasing cooperation between its business units. In 2009, it launched its "make believe" campaign and tried to focus on 3 major areas: imaging, gaming and mobile technology.
