With its headquarters in Palo Alto, California, USA, Hewlett-Packard (HP) is considered to be the world’s leading manufacturer of personal computers. In addition, the multinational information technology company offers hardware and software related products and services to businesses and government sectors.
HP was established in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard in the latter’s garage with a measly capital of $538. It was incorporated in 1947 and went public in 1957. The company is actually recognized as the "symbolic founder" of Silicon Valley but was focused on scientific, business and industrial markets. The company was a pioneer of sorts and was globally respected for a number of their products including the first handheld scientific electronic calculator (1972), the first handheld programmable calculator (1974), first alphanumeric programmable expandable (1979) and first symbolic and graphic calculator. By 1975, they were producing technical desktop computers and eventually, HP computers possessed similar capabilities with IBM Personal Computer.
In 1984, the company introduced its inkjet, laser printers and scanner product line which evolved into a very successful multifunction collection of products including the single-unit printer/copier/scanner/fax machine. By 1990, HP decided to expand their PC product line which was initially targeting the university, business and research users. In 2001, HP successfully merged with Compaq.
The company entered the mobile devices market with its acquisition of Palm, Inc in 2010. But HP decided to exit the tablet and smartphone market in 2011 to focus on cloud, solutions and software particularly on commercial, enterprise and government markets.
