About Routers

A router is a networking device that transfers data between a computer network from one to another. A router is the one that performs the traffic directing functions on the Internet that you are using.

The device is connected to two or more data lines from different networks, basically when a data packet comes in a line, the router reads the network information in the packet and determines its destination. Then, they use this information in its routing table and direct the packet to the next network on its journey.

The most common kind of routers is found at home or at small office, it simply forward IP packets between the home computers and the Internet. More sophisticated routers, such as enterprise routers, connect large business or ISP networks up to the powerful core routers that forward data at high speed along the optical fiber lines of the Internet backbone.

Routers are also often distinguished on the basis of the network in which they operate. A router in a local area network of a single organization is called an interior router. An exterior router directs packets between hosts in one LAN and hosts in another LAN.

.

The main purpose of a router is to connect multiple networks and forward packets destined either for its own networks or other networks. It has 3 layer devices because its primary forwarding decision that is based on the information in the layer-3 IP packet, specifically the destination IP address. When a router receives a packet, it searches to find the best match between the IP address of the packet and one of the addresses in the routing table. Once a match is found, the packet goes to layer-2 data link frame for the outgoing interface indicated in the table entry. A router typically does not look into the packet payload but only at the layer-3 addresses to make a forwarding decision, plus optionally other information in the header for hints on. For pure IP forwarding, a router is designed to minimize the state information associated with individual packets. Once a packet is forwarded, the router does not retain any historical information about the packet.

TYPES AND FEATURES

Learning the types of routers is also helpful and important.

  • Wired Router- these are boxed typed devices which can directly connect to computers. One of the most common wired routers is the Ethernet broadband router. Wired routers typically utilize SPI firewalls for security. While providing information between networks the router utilizes DHCP
  • Wireless Routers- These are the one who connects directly to a modem by a cable in receiving data networks. But instead relying on cables data to computers, its distributes data using an antenna. Unlike wired which establishes through LAN wireless connection establishes through WLAN which we all known as Wi-Fi and to protect this networks it has MAC address filtering WPA security
  • Core Routers / Edge Routers-Both are wired or wireless but the difference is Core distributes data within network not with multiple networks while Edge distributes between one or more network not within a network.
  • Virtual Network- Compared to wired or wireless routers this is a intangible things that acts as a default router for devices sharing a network. The router functions using the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), which becomes active when a primary, physical router fails or otherwise becomes disabled.
