Car Makers and Phone Makers Come Up With a Cutting-Edge "Digital Key" for Vehicles
The digital car key services are all slated to become more accessible, thanks to major car and smartphone brands along with Car Connectivity Consortium which has now joined forces.
Leading car makers and phone makers around the world have now come up with a technology that allows users to lock and unlock their cars with just an aid of a smartphone. And these can all be done even if users opt to switch car brands or models. Touted as the "virtual key," this new technology also allows consumers to start their engine and share access to their cars using other smartphone devices.
The groundbreaking technology was the recent culmination among major smartphone and car brands and the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). The breakthrough allows drivers to transfer their digital keys to a mechanism called Trusted Service Manager (TSM) right in their smartphones.
CCC reveals that the technology will use top-of-the-line security level by means of Near Field Communication (NFC). With it, the system should allow electronic devices to interact when they are brought within proximity.
The said system is currently under development among CCC's charter member firms which include Apple, BMW, Audi, General Motors, Hyundai, LG Electronics, Samsung, Volkswagen, and Honda among others. This also comprises of core members such as DENSO, NXP, Qualcomm Incorporated, ALPS ELECTRIC, Continental Automotive GmbH, and Gemalto.
The possibilities are endless with the digital key technology. Users will be able to palm off their cars to a friend or relative even if they are on vacation. Car rentals will also be very much improved as renters will just have to use an application to get things done.
Despite this breakthrough, it should be noted that the digital car key services have already been executed for quite some time now. The only gripe is that they come with a limited reach. But with numerous car and phone brands now on board, their reach is slated to become unprecedented in no time.
