Tesla also sells other products such as Powerwall and Powerpack batteries, solar panels and solar roof tiles. Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning started the company until Musk became the chairman of the board to lead the company's $7.5 million Series in 2003. The company manufactured Tesla Roadster which is the first fully electric sports car in 2008. It then followed by the Model S which is the world's best-selling plug-in electric car in 2015 and 2016. The company ranked top 8th American car brand among global carmakers in February 2017. Currently, Tesla cars are very popular worldwide.
The company was named Tesla Motors in 2003 but changed to Tesla Inc. on February 1, 2017. Tesla was named after the Serbian-American and physicist Nikola Tesla by the company founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning.
