Land Rover initially started off in 1948 as the Rover Company, which had a product line under the name "Land Rover". It was designed by Rover Company chief designer – Maurice Wilks with inspirational support from World War II Jeep which was much popular in America. In 1967, it was incorporated into British Leyland Motor Corporation's Rover Triumph division. The model became quickly popular across the country, and rising sales in 1970 prompted company officials to establish a separate company – Rover Group in 1988.
After the dissolution and privatization of British automotive conglomerate – British Leyland Motor Corporation – the ownership of Land Rover Company was handed over to British Aerospace. It was sold to leading German luxury car brand BMW in 1994 which was again dissolved, and the remnants were sold off to Ford Motor Company in 2000. The acquisition deal was settled for a sum of 6 million pounds after which Land Rover was incorporated into Ford's Premier Automotive Group along with Jaguar.
Acquisition by Tata Motors
