About JAC Cars
JAC – China's biggest Truck brand to step into Filipino markets
JAC Motors or officially known as "Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co Ltd" is a Chinese automobile manufacturing company. It was founded in 1964 and has its headquarters in Hefei located in the Anhui Province in China. It specializes in producing commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, etc., along with passenger cars and automobile components. According to a survey conducted in 2012, it had an annual production of about 445,000 vehicles that were mostly marketed within China.
JAC Motors was founded in 1964 as "Hefei Jianghuai Automobile Factory" which was later renamed to "Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co Ltd" in the year 1997. It specialized in producing commercial vehicles such as trucks that were marketed under the brand name "Jianghui". It started producing multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) & Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in 2000 and established itself as a distinguished passenger car manufacturer by 2007; JAC's passenger car license was approved by the Chinese State Government in 2007.
Prior to 2007, JAC Motors collaborated with several leading automobile manufacturing brands including Hyundai – a worldwide famous multinational automobile manufacturing company based in South Korea. It had cooperated on an assembly unit during the 2000s following an attempt to elaborate its product lineup and market presence in other South East Asian countries. The joint venture allowed JAC & Hyundai Motors to set up a production unit which was meant to be exclusively devoted to the manufacturing of Hyundai vehicles. Two models were sanctioned following the agreement in 2003 – a multipurpose vehicle and a sports utility vehicle. However, due to some unforeseen circumstances the joint venture with Hyundai Motors was dissolved in 2004.
Acquisition by the Chinese government
The Chinese government wanted to consolidate the automobile industry and hence favored the merger of Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co Ltd with Chery – a well-known manufacturer of passenger cars in China. With JAC Motors specializing in commercial vehicles such as trucks and Chery specializing in passenger vehicles such as cars, it seemed that the merger would prove to be quite successful. However, JAC later began to concentrate on building passenger cars and started building a new electric car in 2010.
JAC Motors is a state-owned public company with the provincial government of Anhui owning about 30% of its shares. The remaining shares are owned by some private and public investors & stock holders which have been made available through the Stock Exchange. It was first listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in the year 2001 and had been stock coded 600418.
