Hummer SUVs: In league of its own
One of the most respected and admired bands in SUV segment, Hummer was a unit of General Motors. It was founded in 1992 by AM General Corporation which was a subsidiary of American Motor Cooperation. Hummer cars are best suited for tough jobs and trekking related purposes. It is one of the most versatile and toughest vehicles in automobile market all over world. They are designed especially to tackle toughest situations with toughest of cargoes in most difficult conditions.
History of Humvees:
Like many other off road vehicle it also conceptualised for military purposes. The need of tough off-road vehicles to tackle unforgiving conditions was considered important. The US Army required special vehicles with toughest of exteriors and which were also very mobile at the same time. Invitations were given to all major automobile companies to manufacture such vehicles. AM General came up with a whole new prototype in just a year which saw off competitions from its main four competitors. The contract for High Mobility Multi Purpose Vehicles for army was offered to AM General. This contract for 55,000 vehicles and it was also worth 1.2 billion dollars in 1985. These vehicles were initially named as Humvees. Contract for these Humvees were later extended for extra 15000 units.
Inception of Hummer Brand:
Later these Humvees were also planned for civilian people. It included some modifications like, more comfortable features, air conditioning, a special multimedia system and other standard passenger car features. Finally, the civilian version of Humvees was sold under name Hummer in 1992.
Ownerships and rights:
The ownership of Hummer brand has exchanged many hands since its inception. As its founder, AM General had its license till 1999. In December 1999, the exclusive rights to sell Hummer brand was bought by General Motors. But in this deal, the manufacturing rights were held by AM General only. Under GM, various improvements were made in the original vehicle and it was renamed as H1. Also, new models under Hummer brand were launched in the form of H2 and H3. But due to recession and high running costs, GM decided to dismantle Hummer brand and the last model was produced in May, 2014
Manufacturing and Assembly Plants:
The demand for Hummer vehicles was increasing all over world due to better marketing strategies of GM. It was exported to more than 30 countries all over world. Also, various other manufacturing and assembly plant were set up in different countries to provide better functioning. Apart from its plant in Shreveport, Los Angeles a plant was also set up at Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The South African plant was set up to meet the growing demands of Hummer vehicles in different parts of world. H2 model was also manufactured at Kaliningrad in Russia. But it was meant only for smaller number of units and it would only suffice the local demands.
The Hummer vehicles are known for their strength, durability and off-road capabilities. This was reflected by series of models of SUV and pickup trucks that were produced under Hummer brand. It all started with H1 which was the first civilian vehicle from this company. Then H2 arrived, a more refined version of SUV. It had qualities of both a passenger vehicle and a tough off road vehicle. It had spacious and very comfortable interiors. The tough exteriors and off road capabilities were retained as they were the soul of any Hummer vehicle. Another version of H2, in form of a sport utility truck named as H2 SUT was also launched. It had a powerful 6.2 litre V8 SFI engine which is one of the best in this segment.
The H3 Model:
The latest model from Hummer was H3, which was built from 2005 to 2010. It was smaller model which was built on GMT355 platform of General Motors. It was made smaller to counter the criticism of Hummer cars being too large to park or drive. It was 188.1 inches long and around 74.7 inches wide which made it a mid size SUV. It was fitted with a 3.5 litre five cylinder engine which could produce 220 hp power and 225 lb-ft torque. Other models on the basis of H3 were also produced such as H3T, H3X and H3 Alpha. H3T was a pickup truck which had excellent towing capabilities and tough exteriors. H3 alpha was the most powerful SUV with excellent interior comforts. It had a majestic 5.3 litre V8 engine which was envy of all other SUVs.
Popularity in Philippines:
Like many SUV lovers all over the world, Hummer vehicles were always loved by people in Philippines. Its special off-road strengths and exceptional looks made it a huge favourite among people. Now, Hummer brand had developed a quite loyal following in Philippines. A local version of Hummer H1, RP Local Hummer is also popular among people. It is produced in Cavite Philippines and also is cheaper than original imported SUV.
